U.S. stock futures are trading lower Wednesday morning as investors are awaiting inflation and manufacturing data. Futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 43 points to 11,378.00 and S&P 500 futures lost 5.50 points to 1,231.30. Nasdaq 100 futures dipped 9.50 points to 2,204.50.

U.S. stocks closed higher yesterday, with the blue-chip Dow index rising 0.42%.

If you're interested on taking a bet on a potential high-flyer, you might want to take a look at Allergan (AGN).

Goldman Sachs recently said they expect more M&A activity in pharmaceutical and that Allergan is a prime candidate for a takeover. Sanofi-Aventis (SNY) and Eli Lilly & Co. (LLY) are two companies analysts are speculating may be interested in acquiring Allergan.

Goldman also upgraded its price target for Allergan on its Conviction Buy List from $78 to $81.

Alcon Inc. (ACL) announced that Novartis AG (NVS) has exercised its option to purchase the remaining shares in Alcon owned by Nestle S.A. at a weighted average price of $180 per share in cash. Upon consummation of the purchase, Novartis would own an approximate 77% interest in Alcon.

Alcon also announced that Novartis had submitted a proposal to the Alcon Board of Directors relating to the remaining approximate 23% publicly-held minority interest pursuant to which Alcon would merge with and into Novartis under Swiss merger law and minority holders of publicly held shares would receive 2.8 Novartis shares for each of Alcon's publicly traded shares. Based on the Novartis share price on December 30, 2009, Novartis' merger proposal values each publicly traded share of Alcon at approximately $153.
