A selloff late in the day erased the small gains, and markets closed in the red today.

Another weak housing figure did not manage to cause too much harm as -- by now -- investors are conditioned to expect poor housing data. Consumer spending and income rose in February, topping expectations. U.S. investors also continued to expect that oil infrastructure would keep growing based upon Middle East build-outs for expanded production.

Continue reading Closing Bell: Stocks Give Up Gains (ALU, EBAY, GSIC, FSLR, EWJ, CCJ, PKD)

Closing Bell: Stocks Give Up Gains (ALU, EBAY, GSIC, FSLR, EWJ, CCJ, PKD) originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 28 Mar 2011 16:30:00 EST. With the contraction in the telecom market, the sales for equipment has plunged.

Yet since September, investors have been piling into Alcatel-Lucent as the shares have gone from $2.80 to $5.34. The reason? Well, the smartphone megatrend is a key factor. As carriers bolster their networks, they need to go to providers like Alcatel-Lucent.

Continue reading Is Alcatel-Lucent Buyout Bait?

Is Alcatel-Lucent Buyout Bait? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 03 Mar 2011 12:20:00 EST. Of course, the large ones were particularly harmful for shareholders.

So what to do? Well, interestingly enough, Alcatel-Lucent has been recently buying up tiny companies, especially in the fast-growing mobile space.

And the latest deal came this week: OpenPlug (the price tag was not disclosed). It is just not very robust growth. It is also as the argument continues of whether the U.S. is headed for a double-dip recession or just a period of slower growth. PIMCO's Bill Gross calls it a long protracted period of slow growth. Today was lighter than normal on the earnings news, and the final verdict over a green or red ticker at the close was not clear until the final minutes today.
A slight gain in the weekly jobless claims had no real impact and a really poor 30-Year Treasury auction that just hints at the demand for rates to rise had only a temporary effect against the stock market.
In the ring this time is France's Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU), which says Microsoft is infringing on its patents in its ultra-popular Outlook e-mail and messaging software. You know, the one that small businesses to megacorporations use for corporate e-mail and calendaring?

After $358 million in damages was awarded Alcatel-Lucent recently, an appeals court judge stated that the lawsuit wasn't supported by evidence. And, he wants the damages amount recalculated. Microsoft said when the original damages were awarded that the amount was way too high, and on appeals it is now being vindicated. The entire amount was based on the global market value for the Outlook product itself, and that Alcatel-Lucent's claims did not contribute to that whole amount.

Continue reading Microsoft sees appeals court toss out $358 million lawsuit

Microsoft sees appeals court toss out $358 million lawsuit originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 14 Sep 2009 12:20:00 EST.
