Here we take a look at how these two processors stack up against each other. AMD also competes with Nvidia (NVDA) in the PC microprocessor and graphics businesses.

By our estimates, server processors constitute around 20% of AMD's stock price.

AMD's market share in server processors was at its peak in 2006, at around 25%, driven by the success of its Opteron series of processors. But very soon Intel regained its lost share by introducing the Xeon processor and releasing upgrades and newer products in the following years. AMD's loss was compounded when it was late in its launch of the Barcelona chip in 2008.

Continue reading Can AMD Regain Lost Server Processor Share?

Can AMD Regain Lost Server Processor Share? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 21 Mar 2011 15:40:00 EST. We estimate that although most of the company's value comes from microprocessor business, about 14% can be attributed to graphics.

One of the recent wins in this regard was Apple's (AAPL) plan to use AMD's graphics cards in its Macbook Pro notebooks. Our price estimate for AMD stands at $9.30, which is roughly in line with market price. The company recently launched a marketing campaign to better promote its products against competitors. Intel, for one, has continuously overshadowed AMD. Does AMD's stock value stand to gain from these initiatives? Here we assess the outlook for a few key metrics.

Continue reading AMD Can Leverage Short-Term Opportunity, but Real Value Comes from Long-Term Positioning

AMD Can Leverage Short-Term Opportunity, but Real Value Comes from Long-Term Positioning originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 25 Feb 2011 14:40:00 EST. Egypt is not getting much better and the economy has come to a stop as no one is back at work yet. Still, things aren't getting worse. This offered some stability to the region. Brent Sea crude hit $100 per barrel today. Data from the PMI showed that inflation at the wholesale level continues to firm, while spending seems to outstrip income again.
Investors are surprised by this announcement, since Meyer took over AMD when the company was floundering and has since stabilized AMD. If you think this stock won't be rising too far in the coming months, then it could be a good time to look at a bearish hedged play on AMD.

Then, Google (GOOG) came along and Microsoft missed the entire search engine revolution. But Microsoft still dominated in software. Then came Apple (AAPL) with its iPod, iPhone, and iPad. Again, Microsoft missed the small device revolution.

However, the day's option volume isn't necessarily bullish in nature.

Nearly all of today's volume has taken place at AMD's January 2012 7.50 call, where a block of 8,000 contracts traded at the bid price -- suggesting they were most likely sold. This block appears to have been tied to a corresponding stock trade, which means we're likely seeing the initiation of a buy-write position.

Continue reading Advanced Micro Devices Hit with Heavy Call Volume

Advanced Micro Devices Hit with Heavy Call Volume originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 29 Dec 2010 14:00:00 EST. It gained 4.5% to settle at a quote of $7.46. What should we make of the price movement?

Well, overall, I'm bearish on this name from a technical point of view. The twelve-month chart instills in me a healthy dose of fear. It's difficult not to see the downtrend. Unless, of course, you focus on the recent action. The markets have perked up lately, so perhaps some of that positive momentum can be attributed to an overall improvement in sentiment.
Continue reading Advanced Micro Devices Shares Jump on Earnings

Advanced Micro Devices Shares Jump on Earnings originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 15 Oct 2010 09:00:00 EST. AMD swallowed a loss of 18 cents per share in the year-ago quarter, leaving plenty of room for improvement.

The semiconductor company has a solid history on the earnings front, having surpassed analysts' per-share profit expectations in each of the past four quarters. However, traders don't seem convinced that AMD can manage another upside surprise.

Continue reading Advanced Micro Devices Under Pressure Ahead of Q3 Earnings

Advanced Micro Devices Under Pressure Ahead of Q3 Earnings originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 14 Oct 2010 12:00:00 EST.
Santa Clara, Calif.-based Intel announced the acquisition of McAfee and joint ventures with General Electric and Nokia (NOK) during its third quarter. Analysts forecast earnings for that period to come to 50 cents per share, which is up 34.0% from the same period of last year. The number one semiconductor maker's revenue for the three months ended in September is expected to total $11.0 billion, or 17.1% more than a year earlier. Looking ahead to the full year, the forecast thus far is for earnings of $1.94 per share (+44.8%) and $43.3 billion in revenue (+23.4%). The per-share earnings topped analysts' expectations in the past four quarters, by as much as a dime per share.

Continue reading Week in Preview: Earnings Expectations for Intel, GE, Google and JPMorgan

Week in Preview: Earnings Expectations for Intel, GE, Google and JPMorgan originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Sun, 10 Oct 2010 12:30:00 EST. New durable goods orders excluding transportation rose 2% in August. Wall St. took this as a sign that businesses as a whole are not terribly concerned about a double dip recession.

The market ignored bad news about housing, perhaps because it has been bad for months and that is expected to continue at least through the end of the year. New home sales remained flat in August according to the Commerce Department at a level of 282,000. Most analysts believed the figure would be above 300,000.
By the end of the trading day, most of the indexes were in the red, but not by much. The two pieces of news that traders had to digest both came early in the day. The National Association of Realtors said existing home sales rose 7.6% to a seasonally adjusted rate of 4.13 million. Housing market progress is still painfully slow. Weekly jobless claims, a notoriously fickle number, rose 12,000 to 465,000. A better indication of the job market -- continuing claims -- fell 48,000 to 4.49 million. The figure is still staggeringly large and a sign the the joblessness problem remains firmly entrenched.
The one-year chart is a somewhat depressing figure to look at for long-term shareholders. But will things change going forward?

Back in April, I called AMD a potential buy-on-the-dips name. I was wrong. And, yes, I'm more cautious today than I was yesterday. You've got to take to heart what the charts are telling you, and in this situation, the technical story is communicating a high degree of risk, at least in my opinion. It's a pity, too, because the chip maker not only issued a decent report after the bell on Thursday, but investors in the extended-hours session responded with a bid, sending the shares higher by 2% at one point.
Continue reading Advanced Micro Devices: Good Report, But Should You Stay Away?

Advanced Micro Devices: Good Report, But Should You Stay Away? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 16 Jul 2010 10:30:00 EST.
