I thought $60 million was too much to hope for (see my <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/06/27/will-disney-score-this-weekend-with-wall-e/">previous piece</a> on the subject). I was wrong. According to <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/">Boxofficemojo</a>, the Pixar picture pulled in more than $62 million at domestic theaters and came out on top. </p>
<p>Assuming the film continues to do well in upcoming weekends, <em>Wall-E</em> should provide a nice counterbalance to the relative disappointment of Disney's <em>Prince Caspian </em>project that was released in May. While Wall-E won't move Disney's stock all by itself, the movie and its characters should help drive the studio segment in future quarters, as well as provide some opportunities for promotions and initiatives in other parts of the company, such as the theme parks. </p>
<p><em>Wanted</em>, distributed by <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/general-electric-company/ge/nys">General Electric</a>'s (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/general-electric-company/ge/nys">GE</a>) Universal, debuted in second place with a haul of more than $50 million. The movie, starring Angelina Jolie, had some snazzy, <em>Matrix</em>-like commercials powering its appeal. I can see why the numbers were big on this one. <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/time-warner-inc/twx/nys">Time Warner</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/time-warner-inc/twx/nys">TWX</a>) and <em>Get Smart</em> didn't stand a chance against <em>Wanted</em>. It dropped two spots to third place with a tally of $20 million. And, no, I still don't find <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/06/23/although-steve-carell-isnt-funny-get-smart-was-number-one/">Steve Carell</a> funny.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/06/30/disneys-wall-e-beats-my-expectations/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Disney's "Wall-E" beats my expectations</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/06/30/disneys-wall-e-beats-my-expectations/">Disney's "Wall-E" beats my expectations</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 30 Jun 2008 09:59:00 EST. So I thought I'd take another look and see how things have worked out. </p>
<p>It's hard to pick just one big winner. In terms of the largest lead over a rival, <strong><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-ivanka-trump-vs-paris-hilton/">Ivanka Trump</a></strong> easily beats Paris Hilton with 89% of the vote. Others holding big leads over their opponents include <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-tiger-woods-vs-david-beckham/"><strong>Tiger Woods</strong></a>, <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/16/money-face-off-warren-buffett-vs-eddie-lampert/"><strong>Warren Buffett</strong></a>, <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-george-lucas-vs-steven-spielberg/"><strong>Steven Spielberg</strong></a>, and <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-rupert-murdoch-vs-sumner-redstone/"><strong>Rupert Murdoch</strong></a>. </p>
<p>In terms of receiving the most votes, the clear leader is the <strong><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-oprah-winfrey-vs-martha-stewart/">Oprah Winfrey vs. Martha Stewart</a></strong> match-up, with just short of 150,000 votes. Other big vote getters were <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-tiger-woods-vs-david-beckham/"><strong>Tiger Woods vs. David Beckham</strong></a>, <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/16/money-face-off-rudy-giuliani-vs-mike-bloomberg/"><strong>Rudy Giuliani vs. Michael Bloomberg</strong></a>, and <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-steve-jobs-vs-bill-gates/"><strong>Bill Gates vs. Steve Jobs</strong></a>. In terms of the liveliest discussions in the comments, the winners are <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-oprah-winfrey-vs-martha-stewart/"><strong>Oprah Winfrey vs. Martha Stewart</strong></a>, <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-maria-bartiromo-versus-erin-burnett/"><strong>Erin Burnett vs. Maria Bartiromo</strong></a>, and <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/16/money-face-off-bono-vs-angelina-jolie/"><strong>Bono vs. Angelina Jolie</strong></a>. Also check out the comments for the <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/16/money-face-off-jrr-tolkien-vs-jk-rowling/"><strong>J.K. Rowling vs. J.R.R Tolkien</strong></a>, <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-tiger-woods-vs-david-beckham/"><strong>Tiger Woods vs. David Beckham</strong></a>, and <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-ivanka-trump-vs-paris-hilton/"><strong>Ivanka Trump vs. Paris Hilton</strong></a> posts. </p>
<p>As for the face-off posts here that got the most attention, the clear winner is <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-maria-bartiromo-versus-erin-burnett/"><strong>Erin Burnett vs. Maria Bartiromo</strong></a>, with more than 13,000 hits. <strong><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-britney-spears-vs-lindsay-lohan/">Lindsay Lohan vs. Britney Spears</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-oprah-winfrey-vs-martha-stewart/">Oprah Winfrey vs. Martha Stewart</a></strong> also attracted lots of readers.</p>
<p>Results for all the face-offs follow below, but keep in mind that the voting is still open. It's not too late to add your vote or let us know what you think.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/10/06/money-face-off-big-winners-oprah-tiger-woods-ivanka-trump-er/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Money Face-Off Big Winners: Oprah, Tiger Woods, Ivanka Trump, Erin Burnett</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/10/06/money-face-off-big-winners-oprah-tiger-woods-ivanka-trump-er/">Money Face-Off Big Winners: Oprah, Tiger Woods, Ivanka Trump, Erin Burnett</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sat, 06 Oct 2007 12:40:00 EST. Many of the face-off polls have had more than 50,000 votes, a couple of them approaching 100,000. </p>
<p>The biggest response came to the <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-oprah-winfrey-vs-martha-stewart/">Oprah Winfrey vs. Martha Stewart</a> match-up. So far, about 75 percent of respondents feel that Oprah is the more successful media magnate. Not that much surprise there, as Oprah's fans are legion. Interestingly, though, of the twenty-some comments the post has received, most of them are pro-Martha.</p>
<p>Another clear leader is <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-steve-jobs-vs-bill-gates/">Bill Gates over rival Steve Jobs</a>. About three quarters of poll votes have gone his way, despite all the buzz recently about <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/apple-inc/aapl/nas">Apple Inc.</a> (NASDAQ: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/apple-inc/aapl/nas">AAPL</a>) and the popularity of its products. Maybe readers are just happy that Gates is stepping down. Let us know what you think.</p>
<p>Alan Greenspan seems to be everywhere these days, promoting his new book, including Comedy Central's <em>The Daily Show</em> and NPR's <em>Fresh Air</em>. In our match-up of the current and former Fed chairs, <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-alan-greenspan-vs-ben-bernanke/">Ben Bernanke vs. Alan Greenspan</a>, more than 70 percent of respondents have voted for Greenspan. Comments to the post are mixed, but seem to me to focus on Greenspan, whether pro or con.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/22/money-face-off-recap-oprah-and-tiger-and-buffett-oh-my/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Money Face-Off recap: Oprah and Tiger and Buffett, oh my!</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/22/money-face-off-recap-oprah-and-tiger-and-buffett-oh-my/">Money Face-Off recap: Oprah and Tiger and Buffett, oh my!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sat, 22 Sep 2007 15:40:00 EST. <p><img alt="" hspace="4" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.bloggingstocks.com/media/2007/09/face-off-240-star-charity-cs091207.jpg" align="right" vspace="4" border="0" />In October 2005, I went to hear Bono, the lead singer of rock band U2 and global poverty-fighter, at New York University. He wasn't there to sing, although he was met outside the door by a crowd of adoring fans. He was there to advocate for the world's poor, sick, and hungry, sharing top billing with renowned economist Jeffrey Sachs. </p>
<p>During his talk, Bono explained how Sachs was his mentor, teaching him about the roots of poverty in the developing world, traveling with him to Africa, and convincing him it was possible to end global poverty. But lately, he lamented, when he called Sachs, he was told, "Sorry, he's with Angelina Jolie."</p>
<p>That line brought down the house. At that point, film actress Jolie was just coming under Sachs' tutelage. She was an increasingly important celebrity advocate for the poor, but she had nowhere near the creds of Bono, who was that year nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize and named <em>Time</em> magazine's person of the year.</p>
<p>Fast forward two years and the picture has changed a bit. Bono is still large on the world stage as a humanitarian, social activist and rock star. But Jolie, in large part due to constant media focus on her relationship with actor Brad Pitt, has lately become a more prominent fixture in the news media. </p>
<p>Jolie has been a <a href="http://www.unhcr.org/help/3f94ff664.html">Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations</a> Refugee Agency since 2001, but her involvement with Pitt starting in 2005 has increased her influence. Marketers now rank her among the most influential celebrities in the world. She has been photographed repeatedly on UN missions to Africa and Asia, adopting three children from Cambodia, Ethiopia and Vietnam.</p>

I also agree with her that the mashing together of celebrity couple names like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie (Brangelina) has got to stop.</p>
<p>We probably should have vetted our buzzword list with Kathleen (who didn't give her last name) before publishing it. Vetted, like all buzzwords, is a fancy-sounding word that describes something simple. It started out meaning reviewing or checking out for accuracy as in the qualifications of a nominee for a cabinet position on an article for scientific journal. Now, it's being bandied about to describe every type of review. For example, officials in Louisville are vetting a <a href="http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061211/NEWS01/612110340">dog ordinance</a>. When words like vetting get overused, their original meaning becomes diluted. <br /></p>
<p>Finally, please dear God, when will the name mashing madness end? I mean first there was Bennifer, now Brangelina. I think Stephen Colbert created the ultimate celebrity couple when he merged William H. Macy and Felicity Huffman into Filliam H. Muffman. With the 2008 presidential election gearing up, I'm afraid the name mashing will only get worse. I'll get the process started with Hillbama (Hillary Cilnton and Barack Obama).</p>

<p>That right, a hybrid DVD.&nbsp;What that means is that on one side, it's a standard DVD while on the other side,
it's a high-definition DVD (those in the know will refer to it as "HD DVD."&nbsp;That's just FYI).&nbsp; On
May 9, Warner Home Video will roll out the the company's very&nbsp;first hybrid DVD -- the Jennifer Aniston vehicle
<em><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0398375/">Rumor Has It</a></em> --&nbsp;at $39.99.</p>
<p>Clearly, this news raises some pretty important questions:</p>
<ul>
    <li>will owning a hybrid DVD will allow you to be as smugly self-righteous as owning a hybrid car? </li>
    <li>will&nbsp;Vince Vaughn, Jennifer Aniston's beau, get insecure&nbsp;because&nbsp;<em><a
href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0364725/">Dodgeball</a></em> is only available&nbsp;in standard DVD format? </li>
    <li>will the release of the <em>Rumor Has It</em> hybrid overshadow forthcoming <a
href="http://today.reuters.co.uk/news/newsArticle.aspx?type=entertainmentNews&amp;storyID=2006-04-25T140351Z_01_L2526694_RTRUKOC_0_UK-JOLIE.xml">Angelina
Jolie - Brad Pitt hybrid</a>? <img height="257" alt="" hspace="4"
src="http://www.clipartspace.com/clipart/baby/baby-clipart01.jpg" width="240" align="right" vspace="4" border="0"
/></li>
