Stocks with Ties to Independence Day - Part 3: Dieter's Lament

The 4th of July just wouldn't be the same without picnics and other celebrations with family and friends. We all love to get together, watch fireworks and eat a lot of good food.

In fact, Independence Day is one of the biggest days of the year for the beer, soft drink and snack food industries.

Chasing Value: TAP into a Real Bargain

Although many stocks are at or near 52-week highs and the bargains are getting harder to come by, they still can be found with only a modest amount of effort. One such opportunity may be Molson Coors Brewing Company (TAP).

The closing price for the stock on Tuesday April 6 was $42.89. The 52-week high of $51.33 was reached mid October 2009 -- six months ago. At a time when many stocks are at or near their 52-weeks highs, TAP is trading at a 20% discount.

AB InBev hangs on to Beck's brand

Beck's beerFirst brewed in 1873, Beck's beer is crisp, fresh, and "full of character." It's also still part of the growing AB InBev family. Anheuser-Busch InBev, which is of course the Belgian-based parent of Anheuser-Busch (BUD), has abandoned plans to sell the German beer brand to Bain Capital.

According to a German magazine, citing financial sources, this was really an eleventh-hour decision, as the contracts were already drawn up and Bain had secured $2.54 billion in financing.

Anheuser-Busch to introduce new beer and plenty more commercials to combat slumping sales

I saw a story in The Wall Street Journal last week discussing what is being called a "rare" slump for Anheuser-Busch InBev. The company saw volume sales fall for Bud Light for the first time in the beer's 27-year history. Dollar sales of Bud Light dropped 2.5% (compared to a year earlier) in the U.S. during the 13 weeks that ended on July 12. Volume sales were 5.5% lower.

So, what can Bud do to rev up sales? How about a new advertising campaign with more than 15 new television commercials and new retail displays. When the American football season begins, the new ads will inundate our television screens and it will further the beer's "Drinkability" campaign that began a year ago.

KKR morphs into a lender

The $52 billion merger of Anheuser-Busch InBev has resulted in some nice opportunities for private equity firms. For example, KKR recently purchased a division of the firm -- Oriental Brewery Co. (the number two brewer in South Korea) -- for $1.8 billion.

Doesn't sound like a lot? Well, it is a big deal. In fact, it's the biggest private equity deal in nine months.
