<p>Verizon made an ad this summer showing a guy scaling a junkyard fence to get his hands on an LG Dare phone, only to run into two junkyard dogs -- chained and snarling pit bulls. Pit bull lovers didn't like the casual depiction of animal neglect and cruelty. Animal rights groups have been working for a long time to stop people from <a href="http://www.helpinganimals.com/ga_chained.asp">chaining up dogs</a> in their yard, <a href="http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=cruelty_home">abusing them</a> and generally <a href="http://www.hsus.org/acf/">using them as a street weapon</a>.</p>
<p>Verizon at first <a href="http://www.phonesreview.co.uk/2008/08/07/video-is-verizon-wireless-lg-dare-pit-bull-ad-sick/">insisted that it would keep running</a> the ad. Then concerned dog owners got the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals involved. PETA first tried to talk with Verizon and explain why the ad annoyed people: the dogs in the commercial had ears docked in a "fight crop" and pit bulls are the most abused breed of dogs. </p>
<p><object width="425" height="349"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/f7hiUrTy6vU&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;color1=0xe1600f&amp;color2=0xfebd01&amp;border=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/f7hiUrTy6vU&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;color1=0xe1600f&amp;color2=0xfebd01&amp;border=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="349"></embed></object></p>
<p>Verizon refused to meet to discuss the situation, PETA says. So they put out an <a href="http://getactive.peta.org/PETA/alert-description.html?alert_id=28214509">action alert</a>. After Verizon got <a href="http://blog.peta.org/archives/2008/07/victory_verizon.php">7,000 e-mails</a> from angry animal lovers, they <a href="http://advertising.about.com/b/2008/08/04/verizon-puts-leash-on-pit-bull-ad.htm">took down the ad</a>.</p>

As indication of the bigness of this particular buzz-phrase, several weeks ago, <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/burger-king-holdings-inc/bkc/nys">Burger King</a> Holdings Inc. (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/burger-king-holdings-inc/bkc/nys">BKC</a>) announced a <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/03/28/burger-king-scores-with-animal-rights-groups/">switch to both cage-free eggs and pork products</a>. So important is the issue that when Portland, Oregon fast food chain Burgerville broadcast their own switch to cage-free, <a href="http://www.oregonlive.com/news/oregonian/index.ssf?/base/news/1170039306111430.xml&amp;coll=7">local media cried</a>, when will <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/starbucks-corporation/sbux/nas">Starbucks</a> Corporation (NASDAQ: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/starbucks-corporation/sbux/nas">SBUX</a>) switch all the eggs in its products (including its popular breakfast sandwiches) to cage-free?<br /><br />The answer could be far more muddled than (for instance) the coffee giant's recent <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/01/16/hormone-free-milk-starbucks-continues-play-to-consumers-health/">changeover to hormone-free milk</a> or <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/01/02/starbucks-removes-trans-fats-effective-now-wait-starbucks-had/">trans-fat-free baked goods</a>. Here's the thing: it's not necessarily assured that cage-free eggs<em> are</em> the be-all and end-all of chicken humanity. And the costs go far beyond a little extra space.<br /><br />This is not to say that I disagree with cage-free eggs, quite the contrary: I recently <a href="http://www.cafemama.com/2007/mar/25_iwantchickens.html">began raising chickens</a> (Bella, Mathilda and Twitter are now six weeks old, and were recently joined by baby "sisters" Gilda and Genevieve) much because of the considerable health and taste benefits of cage-free eggs. Ideally (and in <em>my</em> own backyard), chickens who are not confined to cages get more exercise and a more balanced diet, including greens (they love blackberry and dandelion leaves). The eggs are therefore packed with good vitamins, making the yolks more orange and the shells sturdier -- whether brown, white, or pinkish.<br /><br />But not all cage-free chickens are raised equally.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/05/07/cage-free-eggs-what-are-you-paying-for-and-are-they-better/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Cage-free eggs: What are you paying for, and are they better?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/05/07/cage-free-eggs-what-are-you-paying-for-and-are-they-better/">Cage-free eggs: What are you paying for, and are they better?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 07 May 2007 22:23:00 EST. <p>In the 1970s there were more than 200 child deaths a year attributed to the accidental ingestion of any manner of dangerous household chemicals, personal care products, over-the-counter medications, and cleaning agents. Due to the efforts of multiple agencies, the occurrence of these unfortunate accidents has been reduced to about 36 a year. </p>
<p>In 2005 about 91,000 young children visited hospital emergency rooms do to unintentional poisoning, and poison control call centers fielded more than 1 million calls. By maintaining constant availability and aggressive public awareness, organizations such as the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission seek to further reduce accidental poison fatalities.</p>
<p>To prevent these incidents, <a href="http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml07/07131.html">CPSC recommends</a> the following safety steps: </p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/03/17/national-poison-prevention-week-and-other-good-news/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>National Poison Prevention Week and other good news!</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/03/17/national-poison-prevention-week-and-other-good-news/">National Poison Prevention Week and other good news!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sat, 17 Mar 2007 13:10:00 EST.
