According to APA, which has a knack for purchasing older oil wells and squeezing some more money from them, this purchase was a "rare opportunity to acquire legacy positions from a major oil company." The editor of <a href="http://www.protiming.com/">The Professional Timing Service</a> explains, "There is an acceleration phase coming in these markets that will be suddenly set off by a surprise incident. The time to invest for that eventuality is during market weakness when fear is the ruling emotion.<br />

(<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/mariner-energy-inc/me/nys">ME</a>) in a $4 billion transaction. Typically when we see one company announce that it is going to acquire another company, the stock price of the company doing the acquiring goes down in the short term. But in the long term, this acquisition may help Apache's stock price break out.<br />
<br />
Apache has been stuck in a consolidation range for a few months now. The stock price keeps bouncing back and forth between a slightly down-trending resistance level and an up-trending support level.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/19/mariner-energy-acquisition-could-help-apache-break-out/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Mariner Energy Acquisition Could Help Apache Break Out</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/19/mariner-energy-acquisition-could-help-apache-break-out/">Mariner Energy Acquisition Could Help Apache Break Out</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 19 Apr 2010 18:00:00 EST. Even with UPS's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/united-parcel-service-cl-b/ups/nys" class="inlinked">UPS</a>) surprisingly strong results and outlook, and China's strong economic growth, investors decided it prudent to take a step back following five straight days of gains.<br />
<br />
If Wednesday's rally was fueled by strong results from Intel (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/intel-corporation/intc/nas" class="inlinked">INTC</a>) and JPMorgan Chase (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/jpmorgan-chase-and-co-wrnt/jpm%252b/nys" class="inlinked">JPM</a>), Thursday is all about economic data. Already, RealtyTrac reported a <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/article/foreclosure-rates-surge-biggest-jump-in/523122/">record number of U.S. homes foreclosed</a> in the first three months of this year. Foreclosures jumped 35% in the first quarter from a year ago. In addition, households facing foreclosure grew 16% in the same period. This, the report says, is a sign banks are starting to wade through the backlog of troubled home loans at a faster pace.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/15/before-the-bell-futures-lower-ahead-of-economic-data/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Before the Bell: Futures Lower Ahead of Economic Data</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/15/before-the-bell-futures-lower-ahead-of-economic-data/">Before the Bell: Futures Lower Ahead of Economic Data</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 15 Apr 2010 08:30:00 EST. <em>TheStreet.com's Jim Cramer says the stocks like to move higher along well-worn paths. </em><br />
<br />
With the usual suspects rallying -- gold and oil -- it's important to remember how the oil rallies have unfolded in the past. You have to be able to recall the oil pecking order of the petroleum complex ramp. <br />
<br />
First to move in the drilling complex is Transocean (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/transocean-ltd/rig/nys">RIG</a>) (<a href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=RIG" target="blank">Cramer's Take</a>), the wildest trader in the group. Then it is National Oilwell Varco (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/national-oilwell-varco-inc/nov/nys">NOV</a>) (<a href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=NOV" target="blank">Cramer's Take</a>). Forget that both of these are the least affected by the day-to-day price of oil. The market's real stupid on these oil moves, and that's what happens. On the oil side it is Occidental (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/occidental-petroleum-corporation/oxy/nys">OXY</a>) (<a href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=OXY" target="blank">Cramer's Take</a>), which at least is closely correlated and can have a big move throughout the day.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/12/16/cramer-on-bloggingstocks-remember-the-pattern-of-oil-rallies/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Cramer on BloggingStocks: Remember the pattern of oil rallies</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/12/16/cramer-on-bloggingstocks-remember-the-pattern-of-oil-rallies/">Cramer on BloggingStocks: Remember the pattern of oil rallies</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 16 Dec 2009 09:30:00 EST. <span style="font-style: italic;">TheStreet.com's Jim Cramer says the biggest companies can lobby their way to huge profits. </span><br /><br /> Anyone serious about climate change knows that coal is the worst enemy of the environment. We can have all of the electric cars we want, if they are hooked into a coal-based utility system then the gains are irrelevant. We can also be sure that while all sorts of companies, like the General Electrics (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/general-electric-company/ge/nys">GE</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=GE">Cramer's Take</a>) and Cokes (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-coca-cola-company/ko/nys">KO</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=KO">Cramer's Take</a>) and Nikes (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/nike-inc/nke/nys">NKE</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=NKE">Cramer's Take</a>) and Nestles, support climate control, they are not equal to one Southern Company (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/southern-company-the/so/nys">SO</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=SO">Cramer's Take</a>), which is an important coal-burning company and a huge lobbyist for the coal industry. <br /><br /> Our nation has a two-pronged climate philosophy: pushes on conservation and on renewables. Neither is enough to get us through the next 10 years; we can't produce enough renewable energy at a cheap price and we can't caulk our way out of the jam. <p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/12/07/cramer-on-bloggingstocks-obamas-pro-coal-stance-makes-copenhag/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Cramer on BloggingStocks: Obama's pro-coal stance makes Copenhagen a charade </em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/12/07/cramer-on-bloggingstocks-obamas-pro-coal-stance-makes-copenhag/">Cramer on BloggingStocks: Obama's pro-coal stance makes Copenhagen a charade </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 07 Dec 2009 10:00:00 EST. <p><em>TheStreet.com's Jim Cramer says if the market made sense, you could buy retail and restaurants off the lower oil price.</em></p>
<p>Here's the pattern: We get shelled by oil. It drops to $76 or $77, all energy goes down, and it takes everything else with it. Some of tech has been spared lately because of 3Com (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/3com-corporation/coms/nas">COMS</a>) (<a href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=COMS">Cramer's Take</a>).</p>
<p>Then, in the following couple of days, oil stabilizes (but not after it hurts the oils again), rallies, and everything goes with it. </p>
<p>That's what's been occurring. I don't know why it's any different. In this moment in time, it's often best to buy the most hammered natural gas stocks because they come back fast. The best value is Devon (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/devon-energy-corporation/dvn/nys">DVN</a>) (<a href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=DVN">Cramer's Take</a>), but it simply isn't down enough. Apache (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/apache-corporation/apa/nys">APA</a>) (<a href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=APA">Cramer's Take</a>) would make sense below $60, which is still a ways from here.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/13/cramer-on-bloggingstocks-recognize-the-ludicrous-pattern/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Cramer on BloggingStocks: Recognize the ludicrous pattern</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/13/cramer-on-bloggingstocks-recognize-the-ludicrous-pattern/">Cramer on BloggingStocks: Recognize the ludicrous pattern</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 13 Nov 2009 10:40:00 EST. In what some took as a good sign for big oil, the Houston-based company reported that <a href="http://money.aol.com/news/articles/qp/pr/_a/conocophillips-reports-third-quarter-net/rfid151211823">third quarter net income surged</a> 41% year over year to $3.39 per share, and that revenue also surged 52% to $70 billion. We'll see whether the good news extends to other petroleum giants scheduled to report quarterly results this week. </p>
<p>Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial are looking for <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/bp-p-l-c/bp/nys">BP</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/bp-p-l-c/bp/nys">BP</a>) profits to have grown 43.2% in the most recent quarter to $2.34 per share on revenue of $109.7 billion, and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/chevron-corporation/cvx/nys">Chevron Corp.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/chevron-corporation/cvx/nys">CVX</a>) to post earnings up 39.4% to $3.25 per share on revenue of $86.8 billion. <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/marathon-oil-corporation/mro/nys">Marathon Oil Corp.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/marathon-oil-corporation/mro/nys">MRO</a>), <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/exxon-mobil-corporation/xom/nys">ExxonMobil Corp.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/exxon-mobil-corporation/xom/nys">XOM</a>), and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/royal-dutch-shell-plc-cl-a/rds.a/nys">Royal Dutch Shell</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/royal-dutch-shell-plc-cl-a/rds.a/nys">RDS.A</a>) likewise are expected to report higher net income of $2.33 per share (sales of $23.4 billion), $2.40 per share (sales of $131.4 billion), and $2.65 per share, respectively. Even <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/valero-energy-corporation/vlo/nys">Valero Energy Corp.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/valero-energy-corporation/vlo/nys">VLO</a>) is expected to post earnings slightly higher to $1.46 per share (sales of $36.4 billion), despite the effects of Hurricane Ike. <p>In spite of the recent selloff in the energy sector, most of these stocks are still trading with big gains on the year. This stands in sharp contrast to stocks from the financial sector, which have suffered steep losses as big banks have been forced to liquidate assets and raise capital to support their balance sheets. </p>
<p>Because these two groups of stocks have functioned as polar opposites during this stretch, it has provoked many conversations about which is currently the more attractive investment destination; high-flying energy stocks or beaten down financial stocks. </p>
<p><strong>Its All About Earnings</strong> </p>
<p>When you take a look at the earnings picture, this argument becomes very one-sided. </p>
<p>Crude prices have recently dipped lower, but they are still very high when compared to historical norms, and this will translate into big earnings for energy companies. We can see this dynamic expressed through analyst estimates. </p>
<p><a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/encore-acquisition-company/eac/nys">Encore Acquisition Co.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/encore-acquisition-company/eac/nys">EAC</a>) shares are still trading up sharply on the year in spite of the stocks recent sell off, but estimates have risen in tandem with the stock price, with the current-year estimate advancing to $5.07 per share per share from $3.63 per share 90 days ago. This kind of earnings power provides plenty of fundamental strength for more share appreciation. </p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/08/19/energy-stocks-vs-financial-stocks/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Energy stocks vs. financial stocks</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/08/19/energy-stocks-vs-financial-stocks/">Energy stocks vs. financial stocks</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 19 Aug 2008 16:47:00 EST.
