It's been up, it's been down. The sideways action, as indicated by the one-year chart, isn't for everyone. And it's been one narrow range: The 52-week low is $10.31, while the 52-week high is $14.94. There's obviously some resistance by the market players in terms of taking this one out of its box.

But are the market players wrong? Management sure thinks so, judging by a recent action on its part. As Brent Archer wrote here back near the beginning of March, the company raised its quarterly dividend by nearly 17% and announced a buyback of over $2 billion, to be implemented over the next few years.
Continue reading Applied Materials: Do Q2 Results Make the Stock a Buy?

Applied Materials: Do Q2 Results Make the Stock a Buy? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 20 May 2010 09:30:00 EST. A buyback plan like this should help to put a floor under AMAT's stock price such that even if there is some bad news for the company, the stock might not fall by too much. If you agree that the stock won't fall by too much in the coming months, then now could be a good time to look at a bullish hedged trade on AMAT.

AMAT opened this morning at $12.52. So far today the stock has hit a low of $12.31 and a high of $12.53. As of 12:45, AMAT is trading at $12.39 up 0.10 (0.8%). The chart for AMAT looks bearish while S&P gives AMAT a very positive 5 STARS (out of 5) strong buy ranking.
Continue reading Applied Materials Authorizes $2B Buyback and 16.7% Dividend Increase

Applied Materials Authorizes $2B Buyback and 16.7% Dividend Increase originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 08 Mar 2010 13:20:00 EST. How do they know this?

On other days they refer to the "earnings" of various companies reporting. Perhaps I am splitting hairs, perhaps it is editorial haste (like you might find on our site), or perhaps there is no difference in some people's minds? From my perspective there is a difference between earnings and profits. Every quarter, public companies report their earnings. They do not always report a profit.

Continue reading Sunday Funnies: Barron's predicting profits?

Sunday Funnies: Barron's predicting profits? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Sun, 08 Nov 2009 18:40:00 EST. And consumer spending arises out of consumer confidence. Unfortunately, the signals along the road to economic recovery are mixed, what with the rising GDP growth and the dismal unemployment numbers. Its enough to leave investors scratching their heads. What barometers of consumer confidence will the coming week bring?

The semiconductor company, which also works with solar photovoltaic cells, is starting to look like a good trade to me. However, I still shudder when I examine the numbers. What I've got to keep telling myself, I guess, is that the market is a discounting mechanism, and that now may be the time to act.

According to the press release, which was issued after the market closed on Tuesday, net sales decreased 39% in the third quarter. Adjusted earnings came in at 0 cents per share. That was obviously much less than the 17 cents per share earned one year ago. According to Reuters, which made a further adjustment for equity-based compensation, Applied Materials lost 3 cents per share. The market was expecting a loss of 8 cents per share. The top line beat projections as well.

Continue reading Applied Materials beats in Q3: Time to trade?

Applied Materials beats in Q3: Time to trade? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 12 Aug 2009 09:20:00 EST. They were dismal, to say the least. According to Jon Ogg's Closing Bell on Wednesday, the semiconductor business saw its top line reduced by 50%, and the adjusted loss came to 10 cents per share. Yes, yes, that met expectations. So what? The article also mentioned that the solar operation wasn't doing so hot.

Looking through the actual earnings release, I don't see a lot of things that would make a shareholder happy. Backlog was down. Applied Materials had to use cash to keep things going over the last six months (obviously investors would rather see cash generated from operations). And CEO Mike Splinter described the current climate as very tough in terms of customer demand.
