It appears that Wendy's/Arby's (WEN) is about to have a roast beef sale. The company announced this morning that it is considering selling the struggling Arby's chain in order to focus more on the Wendy's hamburger chain.

Both sides of the company's eateries, Wendy's and Arby's, have seen sales slump, but Arby's has had the most problems thanks mainly to sandwiches that can cost more than five bucks. With such a price tag , those sandwiches weren't selling wel in the current economic atmosphere.

Though it's a bit later than fast-food rivals McDonald's (MCD) and Burger King (BKC), Arby's is at last rolling out a value menu of its own. The restaurant is adding more lower-priced items to its menu including a small roast beef sandwich, curly fries and a "jamocha" shake -- and operator Wendy's/Arby's Group (WEN) is backing them with an expensive new advertising campaign.

It's part of a big push by the higher priced fast-food joint to woo back cost-conscious customers who fled the pricier restaurant for cheaper rivals during the recession. Since Arby's ownership group Triarc bought the Wendy's name in 2008, it has seen its Arby's stores stuck in a steady downward spiral -- sped up by the recession.

But will this latest gambit help, or is Arby's a dying chain?

While the release of economic data doesn't stop next week (see economic schedule highlights below), the earnings season does wind down dramatically. Most of the S&P 500 companies already have reported on the past quarter, which means dismal earnings news is largely behind us, at least for a while. About the only companies of note expected by analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters to report falling earnings this week are Costco Wholesale Corp. (NASDAQ: COST), Wendy's/Arby's Group Inc. (NYSE: WEN), Foot Locker Inc. (NYSE: FL), Bank of Montreal (NYSE: BMO), and Steinway Musical Instruments Inc. (NYSE: LVB).

While PetSmart Inc. (NASDAQ: PETM) and Big Lots Inc. (NYSE: BIG) quarterly profits are expected to be about the same as a year ago, Liz Claiborne Inc. (NYSE: LIZ), Kenneth Cole Productions Inc. (NYSE: KCP), Ciena Corp. (NASDAQ: CIEN), and Trina Solar Ltd. (NYSE: TSL) are expected to have swung to losses in the most recent quarter.

Give Triarc (NYSE: TRY) CEO Roland Smith credit for forthrightness. Less than a month after the company announced it would acquire Wendy (NYSE: WEN)'s -- and well before the deal has even closed -- he wrote a letter to the company's employees saying in effect "Welcome to our conglomerate, you're fired!" to borrow a line from Isadore Barmash's book.

Well, not exactly. Triarc -- which is the parent company of Arby's -- isn't a conglomerate, and his letter had a bit more tact. He wrote: "There will be job cuts at Wendy's. I don't know how to put it any other way and say that I am acting with integrity. We will continue to be truthful with you about these as they come up."

It's a bold strategy. Given Wendy's struggles in recent years, he'll need all the help he can get in making this acquisition work, including strong employee morale. While immediate job cuts might help the bottom line, the impact on the company's remaining employees could make it far from a no-brainer.

Smith is betting that straight talk will pay off, but most employees would probably prefer job security. This letter may lead to a less than friendly welcome when Triarc takes control.
