Prices for some raw materials like cotton, oil, aluminum, tin and many others have skyrocketed in the last year. Manufacturers from electronics to apparel are feeling the pain as they report lower earnings due to higher raw materials costs. That can only mean one thing: prices will be going up on many items in the near future or profit margins will be lower, driving down earnings.</p>
<p>If the first scenario plays out, then inflation will start making a comeback as it will take more dollars to buy the same products. That means a semiconductor chip that cost $2.50 last year may cost $2.75 this year. Same chip, just more expensive. Or an all cotton shirt that cost $50 this year will go to $60. Same shirt, just more expensive.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/12/comfort-zone-investing-either-prices-rise-or-margins-fall/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Comfort Zone Investing: Either Prices Are Going Up or Margins Are Going Down</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/12/comfort-zone-investing-either-prices-rise-or-margins-fall/">Comfort Zone Investing: Either Prices Are Going Up or Margins Are Going Down</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sat, 12 Feb 2011 10:30:00 EST. <br />
ING believes steel prices will rise 10% to 20%, which would then put the industry under pressure. If this scenario were to come to fruition, MT's costs could increase by roughly 15%. Although these increases are less than MT's peers, ING prefers putting money in "diversified mining shares."<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/11/arcelormittal-downgraded-to-hold-from-buy/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>ArcelorMittal Downgraded to Hold from Buy</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/11/arcelormittal-downgraded-to-hold-from-buy/">ArcelorMittal Downgraded to Hold from Buy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 11 Mar 2010 10:30:00 EST. No, not another taste test or another <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/05/05/battle-of-the-brands-coke-vs-pepsi/">Battle of the Brands</a>. It's time for the next quarterly results from these two soft drink titans.</p>
<p>Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters anticipate that <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/pepsico-inc/pep/nys">PepsiCo Inc.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/pepsico-inc/pep/nys">PEP</a>), global beverage and snack food giant, will report fourth-quarter earnings this week that are 9.1% higher that a year ago, or $0.88 per share. Revenue is expected to total $12.8 billion, which is 3.9% higher than last year. For the full year, the profit is expected to be $3.67 per share on revenue of $43.4 billion, up from $3.38 per share on $39.5 billion in 2007. PepsiCo's earnings met or beat estimates in four of the past five quarters, but missed by only two cents per share in the third quarter. The consensus recommendation of analysts remains to buy PEP. The share price fell to a 52-week low in January and is now 24.4% lower than it was a year ago. During the fourth quarter, PepsiCo declared <a href="http://money.aol.com/news/articles/qp/pr/_a/pepsico-declares-dividend/rfid158391222?channel=pf">a $0.42 per share quarterly dividend</a>, agreed to <a href="http://money.aol.com/news/articles/qp/pr/_a/pepsico-agrees-to-acquire-spitz/rfid153390923">acquire a Spitz International</a>, and announced investments in <a href="http://money.aol.com/news/articles/qp/pr/_a/pepsico-plans-to-invest-1-billion-in/rfid154662654">China</a> and <a href="http://money.aol.com/news/articles/qp/pr/_a/pepsico-businesses-and-brands-to-invest/rfid160220041">Mexico</a>. </p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/02/08/the-week-in-preview-coke-versus-pepsi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The week in preview: Coke versus Pepsi</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/02/08/the-week-in-preview-coke-versus-pepsi/">The week in preview: Coke versus Pepsi</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 08 Feb 2009 12:30:00 EST. <p>Being number four on the <a href="http://www.forbes.com/lists/2008/10/billionaires08_The-Worlds-Billionaires_Rank.html">Forbes list of wealthiest persons</a> in the world can't be too bad. That's where British-Indian industrialist Lakshmi Mittal found himself earlier this year, up one place from the year before. His estimated $45 billion placed him just behind Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, and Carlos Slim. But that was before <a href="http://businesssheet.alleyinsider.com/loser-2-lakshmi-mittal">he lost $30.5 billion</a> this year.</p>
<p>Now a resident of London, Mittal was the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lakshmi_Mittal">founder of steelmaker Mittal</a>. Upon its merger with French steelmaker to become <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/arcelormittal-sa-luxembourg/mt/nys">ArcelorMittal</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/arcelormittal-sa-luxembourg/mt/nys">MT</a>), the world's largest steel producer, he became the new conglomerate's chairman and CEO. ArcelorMittal's stock price was up around $104 per share this past June. But after increased production cuts due to the sudden fall in demand for steel in the past six months, the price has since dropped to around $25 a share now. Mittal, who owns 43 percent of the company, has seen a commensurate drop in value.</p>
<p>Mittal had been pursuing the acquisition of a <a href="http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/e2e93e76-ca48-11dd-93e5-000077b07658.html">controlling stake in Dillinger H&uuml;tte</a>, a German steelmaker, which would have helped shore up ArcelorMittal during these difficult global economic conditions. He had wanted to engineer a full takeover of Dillinger as a way to boost the overall technological capabilities of ArcelorMittal, but it didn't quite work out. As a sort of consolation prize, the company will receive about $1 billion for a portion of its stake in the German company.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/12/24/money-losers-of-2008-falling-demand-for-steel-melts-lakshmi-mi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Money losers of 2008: Falling demand for steel melt's Lakshmi Mittal's fortune</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/12/24/money-losers-of-2008-falling-demand-for-steel-melts-lakshmi-mi/">Money losers of 2008: Falling demand for steel melt's Lakshmi Mittal's fortune</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 24 Dec 2008 15:10:00 EST. Energy-related companies are well represented again this week and expectations in general remain high.</p>
<p>Early in the week, analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial anticipate that the big earnings gainers will include <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/eog-resources-inc/eog/nys">EOG Resources Inc.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/eog-resources-inc/eog/nys">EOG</a>), <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/anadarko-petroleum-corporation/apc/nys">Anadarko Petroleum Corp.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/anadarko-petroleum-corporation/apc/nys">APC</a>), and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/cimarex-energy-co/xec/nys">Cimarex Energy Co.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/cimarex-energy-co/xec/nys">XEC</a>), which are expected to post profits of $2.24 per share (up 64.7% from a year ago), $1.48 per share (up 52.7%) and $2.26 per share (up 61.1%) respectively. All three of them have offered positive surprises in recent quarters, and analysts on average recommend buying EOG and Anadarko. Other expected big earnings gainers early in the week include <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/forest-oil-corporation/fst/nys">Forest Oil Corp.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/forest-oil-corporation/fst/nys">FST</a>), <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/pioneer-natural-resources-company/pxd/nys">Pioneer Natural Resources Co.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/pioneer-natural-resources-company/pxd/nys">PXD</a>), <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/comstock-resources-inc/crk/nys">Comstock Resources Inc.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/comstock-resources-inc/crk/nys">CRK</a>), and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/mastercard-incorporated/ma/nys">MasterCard Inc.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/mastercard-incorporated/ma/nys">MA</a>). The earnings of phosphates producer <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/innophos-holdings-inc/iphs/nas">Innophos Holdings Inc.</a> (NASDAQ: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/innophos-holdings-inc/iphs/nas">IPHS</a>) are expected to have risen 92.3% to $3.37 per share. Innophos beat estimates in the previous quarter by a whopping 210%, and analysts have been impressed with <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/marketsnews/idINBNG41737620081024?rpc=33">Innophos's lack of debt</a> and pricing gains despite the slowing economy, so, on average, they recommend buying IPHS.</p>
<p>Also early in the week, analysts expect <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-goodyear-tire-and-rubber-company/gt/nys">Goodyear Tire &amp; Rubber Co.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-goodyear-tire-and-rubber-company/gt/nys">GT</a>), <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/kaiser-aluminum-corporation/kalu/nas">Kaiser Aluminum Corp.</a> (NASDAQ: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/kaiser-aluminum-corporation/kalu/nas">KALU</a>), and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/oshkosh-corporation/osk/nys">Oshkosh Corp.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/oshkosh-corporation/osk/nys">OSK</a>) to report that their profits fell 52.9% to $0.33 per share, 45.1% to $0.67 per share, and 41.2% to $0.67 per share, respectively. These companies have tended to beat estimates in recent quarters, and the consensus recommendations of analysts are to buy them. However, <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-pmi-group-inc/pmi/nys">PMI Group Inc.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-pmi-group-inc/pmi/nys">PMI</a>), one of the largest private mortgage insurance providers in the U.S., is expected to take another hit as the housing slump drags on. The California-based company is expected to have widened its net loss from $1.04 per share a year ago to $2.43 per share in the most recent quarter. Its shares are down 84.5% from a year ago, and have been trading recently near their 52-week low.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/11/02/the-week-in-preview-expectations-remain-high-for-energy-and-oil/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The week in preview: Expectations remain high for energy and oil</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/11/02/the-week-in-preview-expectations-remain-high-for-energy-and-oil/">The week in preview: Expectations remain high for energy and oil</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 02 Nov 2008 12:30:00 EST.
