Agri-giant Archer Daniels Midland Co. (NYSE: ADM) and number three burger chain Wendy's International Inc. (NYSE: WEN) are scheduled to report earnings tomorrow morning. Here's a quick peek at them ahead of results.

ADM failed to beat earnings expectations in only two of the past eight quarters. When it reported fiscal 2008 first-quarter results back in November, its earnings per share of 71 cents easily beat the 59 cents consensus forecast of analysts polled by Thomson Financial. Earnings were 59 cents per share in the previous quarter, and 61 cents in the first quarter of 2007. For the current quarter, analysts expect earnings of 74 cents per share.

ADM's 33.4% earnings per share growth forecast for the next three to five years is more than the industry average and the S&P 500. The analysts' consensus recommendation is to buy ADM. Shares have recently climbed toward the 52-week high of $47.33 from back in December, and closed Friday at $45.50.

• XM SATELLITE RADIO HOLDINGS INC (NASDAQ: XMSR)

Word is that there's more than one bid out for the satellite radio company. We know about the merger agreement with Sirius Satellite Radio Inc's (NASDAQ: SIRI), so who's the other party? Or, is there another party? Some are convinced it's just talk. No names are even floating around. But for XM to walk away from Sirius would cost them a $175M break-up fee. They'd have to really be serious about another offer to do that.


• BUILDING MATERIALS HOLDING CORPORATION (NYSE: BLG)

In May, Robert L .Chapman of Chapman Capital, the "activist investor", said Building Materials Holding Corp. should consider selling all or parts of itself. Then he upped his stake to 8.1% in the residential construction services provider. Now comes word that the company may have hired, or be in the process of hiring, a strategic advisor.

Another week, another run through the rumor mill. And, as usual, it all surrounds possible takeovers/buyouts.

WENDY'S INTERNATIONAL INC (NYSE: WEN)

Up first is Wendy's, because since the company is exploring strategic alternatives, and shareholder Highfields Capital Management is pushing for a sale, the idea of a suitor isn't that farfetched. The rumor is that this mystery suitor has bid for the company. Will this Biggie-size Wendy's stock price? Only time will tell.

ARCHER DANIELS MIDLAND COMPANY (NYSE: ADM)

And in the earlier stages of the M&A cycle, the rumor with Archer Daniels Midland is that the company has hired a strategic adviser. This wouldn't be that mind-blowing, considering it follows an EPS miss when the company reported on May 1, and a downgrade by ThinkEquity on May 2 on margin weakness.

BEA SYSTEMS INC (NASDAQ: BEAS)

File this under "the boy that cried wolf." BEA Systems has long been the subject of takeover talk, and it has continued this week. This despite firms such as Bernstein saying a takeover is unlikely as the company's valuation is too high.
