India Infrastructure Index Fund (INXX): Building Value

"Investing in Asia follows two broad themes: asset reflation and growing domestic demand; however, without improvements in infrastructure the ambitious goals to boost domestic demand in emerging markets will be unsustainable," suggests Yiannis Mostrous.

The editor of The Silk Road Investor explains, "Without upgrading their infrastructure, these countries won't be able to achieve the savings from reduced costs and a faster production cycle.

"This is particularly important for Asia because the region is leading the charge on global economic growth. Emerging economies are in a race against time to build up their infrastructure, as breakneck urbanization is pressuring existing infrastructure.

"The Indonesian market is advancing further so far in the second half of the year. As a result, IDX certainly has my attention.

Morgan Stanley India (IIF): 'Teeming with opportunity'

"With an increasingly affluent middle class fueling heavy domestic consumption, India is teeming with investment opportunities," suggests Nathan Slaughter.

In The ETF Authority, he looks to Morgan Stanley India Investment (NYSE: IIF), noting, "This exchange-traded fund has been one of the best-performing Asian funds, quintupling shareholders' money during the past decade."

"India is home to 1.2 billion citizens, second only to China as the world's most populous nation. Many of its people still eke out a marginal, agrarian lifestyle. But, more than 300 million Indians are skilled workers that have graduated to the ranks of the middle and upper classes.

China funds for growth and income

"For income investors, China is one of the hardest places on the planet to find high yields," says income specialist Carla Pasternak.

In her High Yield Investing, she suggests, "However, we have found a trio of China funds that do offer a dividend yield along with tremendous long-term potential." Here, she looks at two favorites: Oberweis China Opportunities (OBCHX) and Matthews China (MCHFX).

Pasternak explains, "I think we're in the early stages of China's economic boom, and I believe the country can continue to grow at a high single-digit pace for the next decade; if that happens, then plenty of Chinese companies will provide handsome returns for their shareholders.

A favorite fund for small cap exposure to Asia

"Matthews Asia Small Companies Fund (MSMLX) was among the top-performing funds of the first half of 2009, with a return of more than 47%," says Mark Salzinger.

In his No-Load Fund Investor, he suggests, "Though volatile, it wouldn't surprise us in the least if Matthews Asia Small Cap turned out to be one of the top-performing funds we cover over the next decade." Here is the fund's expert's review.

"The fund has benefited so far this year from its focus on China and India, two of the year's best-performing stock markets. However, the fund's mandate to invest in developing Asia's small companies also has been a boon.

Top Stock Picks '09: Matthews Asia Pacific Income (MAPIX)

This post is part of a special annual report -- Top Stock Picks '09 -- in which TheStockAdvisors.com asked 75 leading newsletter advisors to select their favorite investment for the new year.

"Matthews Asia Pacific Equity Income (MAPIX) is my top no-load fund pick for 2009," says leading mutual fund expert Mark Salzinger.

In his The No-Load Fund Investor, the advisor explains, "Though most investors do not associate Pacific-Rim investments with high-dividend yields, this $80-million fund could change their perception.

"Matthews Asia Pacific Equity Income was recently offering investors a dividend yield of approximately 5%.

"Managers Jesper Madsen and Andrew Foster seek to fill this fund with dividend-paying stocks of companies throughout the Asia-Pacific region, including Japan, China/Hong Kong, Taiwan and recently at least eight other Asian countries.

"Though dividends have not protected investors in American stocks from the carnage so far in 2008, they appear to have reduced losses for investors in Asian equities.

Best Stocks for 2008: Asian diversity via Fidelity China Region (FHKCX)

For 25 years, Steven Halpern, editor of TheStockAdvisors.com, has surveyed the leading financial newsletter advisors asking for their favorite stocks for the coming year. This article is one of 100+ ideas in the Best Stocks for 2008 report.

"Fidelity China Region (NASDAQ: FHKCX) is my top speculative idea for 2008," says Jim Lowell, mutual fund expert and editor of The Fidelity Investor.

"With regard to China Region, caution will likely always remain my buy word. But, for the first time since this fund's inception back in 1995, this fund is beginning to exhibit characteristics of both the region (Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and Australia that account for 55% of its assets) and China (which now accounts for over 30% of the names in the portfolio -- a year ago that weighting was 6%; in March of this year it was 7%).

"New manager, Wilson Wong, who took the helm in June of this year, is finally enabling this fund to both live up to its name and differentiate itself from Fidelity's and other Asia-focused funds. That's plus one in my book.
