Deutche Telekom will get an 8% stake in AT&T.
This is a game changer. Now AT&T will have one-third more customers than Verizon (VZ) and twice as many as Sprint Nextel (S). The new AT&T will have about 130 million subscribers. AT&T will have nearly 80% of its business in wireless.
Continue reading Ma Bell Returns: AT&T to Buy T-Mobile for $39 Billion

Ma Bell Returns: AT&T to Buy T-Mobile for $39 Billion originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 21 Mar 2011 09:00:00 EST. The average monthly fee that Verizon's postpaid wireless subscribers pay for wireless service, excluding data service, has been consistently declining over the past few years. The decline in pricing is mainly attributable to nearing saturation of the U.S. cellular market, creating fierce competition among telecom players to maintain and increase their market share.

A successful Verizon-iPhone (AAPL) deal and rising data revenues from smart phone penetration could, however, offset declines in average mobile plan prices.

Continue reading Outlook for Verizon's Mobile Plan Pricing

Outlook for Verizon's Mobile Plan Pricing originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 04 Mar 2011 09:00:00 EST. (VZ), as customers could finally walk into a Verizon store and pick up an iPhone. Some analysts had expected to see some long lines, but they did not materialize, creating the impression that the launch was less than successful, but looks can be deceiving.

It is easy to understand where the confusion comes from.
And the reason is obvious enough: AT&T remains well-positioned to be a force in the Internet/communications revolution in the years ahead. Look for AT&T's revenue to grow about 1% to 3% in 2011, led by an impressive increase in cell phone customers (which numbered about 93 million as of June 2010) and wireless data service customers.

Continue reading AT&T Shares Headed to $35 and Beyond?

AT&T Shares Headed to $35 and Beyond? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 25 Jan 2011 12:30:00 EST. Today the communications firm started to introduce details about the release. The first question to answer is when the iPhone will be released - which is February 10 according to Verizon's Internet site. MarketWatch reported that the iPhone 4 will be available for pre-order on February 3.

The popular smartphone will cost $199 for the 16GB version and $99 for the 32GB version. These are the same price points for the device on the AT&T (T) network. One difference between the carrier's versions is that the Verizon version will also work as a wi-fi hotspot (with credit to the Engadget blog's live coverage of the event). This mobile hotspot will be able to support up to five different devices.
Continue reading Verizon Releases Details on the iPhone Release

Verizon Releases Details on the iPhone Release originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 11 Jan 2011 13:30:00 EST.
The editor Investment Quality Trends explains, "While not a mirror image of the 'old' Ma Bell, the latest incarnation of AT&T is arguably much better.

Top Picks 2011: AT&T (T) originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 31 Dec 2010 11:00:00 EST. (AAPL) Store, the stock market only going up, and a majority of economic prognosticators simply glowing at the prospects for 2011. Perhaps it is contrarians that should follow the "don't ask, don't tell" military rule just signed out of existence by president Obama today.

Unfortunately I can't help myself. I have to ask, I have to tell. When I see everyone get too giddy, I start to put on the breaks and slow down. It is not that I wish unhappiness upon people. I just want them to refrain from being lemmings. Some percentage of the market's upswing is short covering, and some can be attributed to momentum investors and market timers (big mistake) but that is 100% speculation and zero percent investing.
Continue reading Chasing Value: Don't Be Happy -- Worry!

Chasing Value: Don't Be Happy -- Worry! originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 22 Dec 2010 16:40:00 EST.
AT&T remains well-positioned to remain a force in the Internet/communications revolution in the years ahead. Look for AT&T's revenue to grow about 2% to 4% in 2011, led by an impressive increase in cell phone customers (which numbered about 93 million as of June 2010) and wireless data service customers. In 2010, revenue should rise 1% to 3%.

AT&T: Old Reliable originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 26 Oct 2010 14:30:00 EST. This story is about one of my less successful investments, which I acquired and sold many years ago. Over the past four years, I have written many times about Intuitive Surgical (ISRG), by far my best stock investment, up 4,500%, give or take, over a ten-year period. I bought in at the bottom and held on for the ride, until last year when the market tanked and took Intuitive Surgical with it.

Essentially, this means using your smartphone's GPS capability to show friends your current location. One of the early leaders in the space is Foursquare, which recently snagged a large amount of venture capital. But other players are diving in. For example, Shopkick recently rolled out a pilot of its LBS platform to allow shoppers at Best Buy (BBY) to get discounts. And of course, Facebook recently launched its Places capability.

In fact, now AT&T (T) is getting into the game. The telecom giant has teamed up with an LBS startup, SCVNGR, which has a rewards system for the iPhone and Android. It will be in 50 AT&T stores throughout the Midwest as a trial program.

Continue reading AT&T Jumps into the Mobile Location Biz

AT&T Jumps into the Mobile Location Biz originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 24 Aug 2010 13:00:00 EST.
The ratings house placed the communications firm on CreditWatch negative with implications, which includes the company's "A" rating and its "A-1" short-term and commercial paper ratings. S&P stated, that it expects "a potential downgrade of the corporate credit rating, if any, would be limited to one notch." The results were 14 cents better than the same quarter a year ago. Taking a one-time gain of seven cents out of the equation (stemming from a stock transaction), AT&T still managed to top the consensus estimate of 57 cents per share.

The company also reported that it topped 90 million connections for the first time during the quarter, driven by a record 3.2 million iPhone accounts activated (a company record). The activations weren't solely driven by the iPhone, as 1.6 million other wireless connections were added (a second-quarter record). In fact, the stock has formed a modest downtrend that's raised a caution flag.

Even so, the calculation is to stick with the trade on the thesis that T remains well-positioned to remain a force in the Internet/communications revolution in the years ahead. Look for T's revenue to grow about 2-3% in 2010, led by an impressive increase in cell phone customers (which numbered about 85 million as of January 2010) and wireless data service customers.
Continue reading AT&T Continues to Meander

AT&T Continues to Meander originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 25 Jun 2010 14:20:00 EST. (AAPL) needs to send personalized holiday cards to all of its customers to thank them for their unwavering and fierce loyalty. Apple-philes are a special breed of fanatic, and they are always in search of the next innovation. Witness the initial iPad sales, which surpassed even Apple's optimistic expectations. And witness early pre-orders of the iPhone 4, debuting in the U.S. on June 24.

First, anxious shoppers crashed AT&T, Inc.'s (T) shopping server in the wee hours of Wednesday morning. AT&T has now suspended advance orders indefinitely. And still, the number of pre-orders for the iPhone 4 were 10 times higher than orders for the 3GS last year. If you weren't one of the lucky ones to order through Apple or AT&T while they still had existing inventory, you'll be waiting until the next shipment, expected to be before July 2.
Continue reading iPhone 4 Pre-Order Sales Trump 3GS

iPhone 4 Pre-Order Sales Trump 3GS originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 16 Jun 2010 16:30:00 EST.
