Analyst Upgrades

  • KeyBanc upgraded Las Vegas Sands (LVS) to hold from underweight based on Singapore performance and a potential revaluation of the yuan.
  • ThinkEquity upgraded Seattle Genetics (SGEN) to buy from hold based on the positive SGN-35 HL data. The firm raised its price target to $16 from $12.
  • Merriman upgraded Applied Signal (APSG) to buy from neutral with a $28 to $31 valuation range, citing greater confidence in earnings estimates and the company's recent contract wins.
  • Siliconware Precision (SPIL) was upgraded to neutral from underperform at Macquarie.
  • Pulte Group (PHM) was upgraded to neutral from sell at Goldman.
  • Greenbrier (GBX) was upgraded to outperform from market perform at Morgan Keegan.

You could blame trade deficit, or the government deficit, which both came out today, either way, this was one of those miserable days spawned overseas with weakness in China and on the heels of a lower economic guidance from the FOMC. Triple-digit DJIA losses never saw any bargain buyers come into the mix. Today's drop in the DJIA also took the index back into the red for the year as the December 31 closing date was at $10,428.05.

While it's still early, the signs are positive that we'll see a nice comeback in the IPO market. For example, Avago (NASDAQ: AVGO) and Starwood Property Trust (NYSE: STWD) had strong offerings. Moreover, recently we've seen some large IPO filings, such as for Dole Food and Hyatt.

No doubt, Wall Street will make some juicy fees. So, to get a piece of the action, Lazard (NYSE: LAZ) has made a big move: it has hired IPO banker, Tom Tuft. He was the equity capital markets group chairman at Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS). He joined the firm in 1976.
