What differentiates Avon from other beauty and personal care players such as L'Oreal (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/l-oreal-unsp-adr/lrlcy/nao">LRLCY</a>), Procter &amp; Gamble (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/the-procter-and-gamble-company/pg/nys" class="inlinked">PG</a>), Estee Lauder (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/the-estee-lauder-companies-inc/el/nys" class="inlinked">EL</a>) and Unilever (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/unilever-plc/ul/nys" class="inlinked">UL</a>) is not <em>what</em> it sells but <em>how</em> it sells. Avon is the largest direct selling organization in the world, with over 6.2 million sales representative generating annual revenues of nearly $11 billion in 2010.</p>
<p>Avon sells everything from shower-gels to watches to nutritional supplements. While others sell their products through third party establishments like drugstores or mass volume retailers, Avon sells its products directly to the final consumer. Avon's sales representatives are independent contractors that pitch Avon's products to consumers and, upon receiving an order, buy the product from Avon at a discount and earn the difference.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/29/its-the-people-not-the-products-that-drive-avon-stock/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>It's the People, Not the Products, That Drive Avon Stock</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/29/its-the-people-not-the-products-that-drive-avon-stock/">It's the People, Not the Products, That Drive Avon Stock</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 29 Mar 2011 13:00:00 EST. <br />
Further, AVP has downtrended in <a href="http://clearstation.etrade.com/cgi-bin/details?Symbol=avp&amp;Refer=http://clearstation.etrade.com/cgi-bin/focus">bear-hug fashion</a> for the last three months -- a bearish technical pattern -- and the sell/stop loss is close by at $24.<br />
<br />
Concerning Avon's fundamentals, Avon should post a 4-5% 2011 revenue increase, after 2010's 4.8% rise, led by emerging market sales gains, including rises in Central/Eastern Europe and Latin America. However, AVP's China market is having difficultly with its new direct sales method, and that probably has prompted some institutional investors to hit the 'sell' button. <p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/17/avon-s-stock-continues-to-misbehave/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Avon's Stock Continues to Misbehave</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/17/avon-s-stock-continues-to-misbehave/">Avon's Stock Continues to Misbehave</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 17 Mar 2011 17:00:00 EST. <p>Concerning Avon's fundamentals, Avon should post an impressive 2010 revenue increase of 6% to 9% led by emerging market sales gain, including Central/Eastern Europe and Latin America. Counter-intuitively, AVP's China market will likely underperform. Avon should also post a 3% to 5% revenue increase in 2011.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/27/avon-products-for-now-stand-aside/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Avon Products: For Now, Stand Aside</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/27/avon-products-for-now-stand-aside/">Avon Products: For Now, Stand Aside</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 27 Jan 2011 17:00:00 EST. The makeup seller reported total <a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/avon-reports-third-quarter-results/rfid381274600/?channel=pf">third-quarter earnings</a> of 38 cents per share, compared to 36 cents per share a year ago. <br />
<br />
Adjusting the earnings for the impact of Venezuelan special items and restructuring costs, AVP earned 41 cents per share. On that basis, a year ago, AVP earned 42 cents per share. The bad news for AVP is that the results fell six cents shy of the consensus estimate. <br />
<br />
As for revenue, the women's beauty product company pulled in $2.62 billion, which is 4% more than a year ago. This increase was attributed to higher accounts payable and higher cash-related net income.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/10/28/avon-earnings-soft/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Avon's 'Soft' Earnings</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/10/28/avon-earnings-soft/">Avon's 'Soft' Earnings</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 28 Oct 2010 10:00:00 EST. And yes, this week it happened again. Actually, investors are giving it some credence. In Tuesday morning trading, the shares of Avon were up 5.6% to 35.03. That's only a couple bucks away from its 52-week high.</p>
<p>The buyout buzz comes from a <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-10-12/avon-products-gains-in-german-trading-on-report-that-l-oreal-may-make-bid.html">report</a> in the <em>Daily Mail</em>. According to this UK paper, it appears that L'Oreal is looking at a bid that could be as high as $44 per share, or $19 billion.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/10/12/avon-buyout/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Is Avon Buyout Bait?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/10/12/avon-buyout/">Is Avon Buyout Bait?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 12 Oct 2010 12:20:00 EST. <br />
On Thursday, the company reported <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/avon-reports-second-quarter-results/rfid352805135/?channel=pf">second-quarter data</a>. Sales rose 8%. On an adjusted basis, net income was 48 cents per share; this compares very nicely to the 38 cents per share booked in the year-ago period. Analysts were hoping for <a href="http://www.earnings.com/company.asp?client=cb&amp;ticker=avp">45 cents</a> per share. Operational cash flow over the last two quarters more than tripled to $241 million.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/30/avon-increases-adjusted-income-in-q2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Avon Increases Adjusted Income in Q2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/30/avon-increases-adjusted-income-in-q2/">Avon Increases Adjusted Income in Q2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 30 Jul 2010 15:40:00 EST. But the rise in its shares over the last year has put the business on many trading radars. Looking at the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/revlon-reports-2009-results/rfid303104423/?channel=pf">fourth quarter report</a>, I myself have to wonder if the story is now worth more investigation.</p>
<p>Sales decreased just under 2% once currency effects are stripped out. Net income as a whole increased 9% to 24 cents per share. Profit from continuing operations did a little better, jumping over 13% to 25 cents per share. This wasn't enough to satisfy the analysts. They were projecting <a href="http://www.earnings.com/company.asp?client=cb&amp;ticker=rev">35 cents</a> per share.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/26/revlon-reports-earnings-growth-but-misses-estimates/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Revlon Reports Earnings Growth, but Misses Estimates</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/26/revlon-reports-earnings-growth-but-misses-estimates/">Revlon Reports Earnings Growth, but Misses Estimates</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 26 Feb 2010 09:00:00 EST. The stock reacted negatively to the news. A day later, the stock is still selling off. According to <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSN0415298920100204?type=marketsNews">Reuters</a>, adjusted earnings of 68 cents per share basically met expectations. Sales were apparently a little off the mark. Besides the lack of going beyond Wall Street's wishes, currency issues in the Venezuela market is a problem.<br />
<p>If you look at the growth rates, however, things don't appear to be so bad. According to the actual corporate <a href="http://money.aol.com/rtn/pr/avon-reports-fourth-quarter-and-full-year-2009-results/rfid296098330?channel=pf">press release</a>, diluted earnings per share increased 15% on a reported basis. Sales shot up 13% (or 8% in terms of local currency). Gross margin also expanded.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/05/avon-grows-q4-profit-but-stock-selling-off/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Avon Grows Q4 Profit, but Stock Selling Off</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/05/avon-grows-q4-profit-but-stock-selling-off/">Avon Grows Q4 Profit, but Stock Selling Off</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 05 Feb 2010 15:20:00 EST. <p>The household and personal care segments increased revenue every year from 2003 to 2008. So, 2009 was but a bump in the road. It was fitting, in a sense, since it was the day before Halloween. In fact, as this <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/10/30/closing-bell-just-tricks-no-treats-cit-xom-c-nvtl-rvsn-c/">Closing Bell</a> piece noted, there were more tricks than treats to be had on Wall Street.</p>
<p>There are always equities bucking the trend, however. <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-estee-lauder-companies-inc/el/nys">The Estee Lauder Companies</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-estee-lauder-companies-inc/el/nys">EL</a>) was one of them. As has been the case with many reports, the top line wasn't the fun part of the document: Estee Lauder saw a decrease of 2.7% for adjusted revenues. Here's the item of interest: net income after charges was 85 cents per share, more than three times what was made in the comparable frame.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/10/31/estee-lauders-earnings-explode-to-the-upside-in-q1/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Estee Lauder's earnings explode to the upside in Q1</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/10/31/estee-lauders-earnings-explode-to-the-upside-in-q1/">Estee Lauder's earnings explode to the upside in Q1</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sat, 31 Oct 2009 14:10:00 EST. Currency translations helped to drive a 4% decrease in net revenue. Excluding that effect, sales were up 7%. Net income decreased a big 31% to 36 cents per share. </p>
<p>However, according to <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/companyNewsAndPR/idUSN2926035820091029">Reuters</a>, adjusted earnings of 42 cents per share beat analyst projections by two pennies. Such news didn't seem to matter to the market. At the time of this writing, Avon was down 1.9% on significant volume. </p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/10/29/avon-sold-on-q3-news-but-think-long-term/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Avon sold on Q3 news, but think long term </em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/10/29/avon-sold-on-q3-news-but-think-long-term/">Avon sold on Q3 news, but think long term </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 29 Oct 2009 16:45:00 EST.
