Sure, Oprah's on my list, but not because she's a billionaire so much. And I started thinking... what is it, really, that I envy? Because envy is far, far from admiration. It's a whole other category. Who do I envy, and why?

When I saw the headline, before I even clicked further, I thought "Maria Bartiromo." She doesn't even make Forbes' cutoff -- she's not a billionaire, for starters. But if there's anyone I envy, it's Maria, she of the smoky eyes and the men in powerful places who do stupid, stupid things for her.

What do women envy of other women? It's not their money, at least, not for me. It's their power, their fame, their ability to juggle family and career. And most of all it's their ability to manipulate others without seeming manipulative at all. It's the Money Honey, able to move markets with a bat of her dark eyelashes.

If I was to create a list of the women most worthy of a female MBA's envy, here's who would be on it:
Continue reading Businesswomen I envy: it's not always their money

Businesswomen I envy: it's not always their money originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 08 Mar 2007 04:50:00 EST. As I'm a financial type who works from home, they're often subjected to my TV choices; so they know Maria Bartiromo and Rachael Ray well, much like faraway telegenic aunts.

If a recent trademark filing is any indication, they soon may get to know Maria even better, not as a CNBC reporter (nor as the center of a scandal involving special treatment by Citigroup Inc. (NYSE:C) bigwig Todd Thomson) but as the cartoon "Money Honey."

No, really! TVNewser was tipped off on the filing, in the name of Bartiromo, Maria for Money Honey to be used for "Entertainment services, namely, an ongoing children's television series; motion picture films; theatrical programs; fan club services; online entertainment services, namely information, interactive games ..." and, of course, more. It's just been filed, on January 16th. I've filed many a trademark application, and in my opinion, this looks as if it was done up in 30 minutes. I'm sure the attorneys at Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz billed a whole hour for it though... No word on whether the resulting show might be live-action or animated.

While I love the concept (it's far prettier than Warren Buffett's animated series, though a little less fun), the timing leaves something to wonder, wonder, wonder, wonder... did Maria file in anticipation of a brou-ha-ha resulting in calls for CNBC to fire her? Had she just discovered that her biggest fan's Sundance deal was going to fall through, and this was the next-best thing? Is it just a complete coincidence?

Like they say on Psych, there's no such thing as coincidence.
Maria Bartiromo, Money Honey -- now for kids? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 29 Jan 2007 19:50:00 EST. He discussed Time Warner Inc., (NYSE: TWX), hedge funds, private equity, and other topics

On Time Warner, Carl Icahn said Parsons did the right thing with the buyback. After the $20 billion buyback he said it was one of the best investments he made. He also said Bewkes was doing a great job. The shares are up now and just put in another recent (not all-time) record close today at $20.43, up 0.5% on 33.5 million shares traded.

Icahn noted that the problem with most private equity funds is that they are too leveraged. They may help run the company better, but the private equity guys have too much leverage in general. He thinks this will ultimately lead to problems.

Icahn also said the best investment you can make is to buy companies and change their management. He should know. Back in September, Forbes listed him as the 24th richest American with a $9.7 billion net worth.

Icahn interviewed by Bartiromo: Discusses private equity, Time Warner, and best investing originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 17 Nov 2006 17:26:00 EST.
