That was at $29.50. Know what the stock closed at yesterday? Its final price was $41.33. And that's rather close to the 52-week high of $42.27.<br />
<br />
To fully appreciate how dramatic the rise in the stock has been requires a look at the one-year <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/big-lots-inc/big/nys/tech-chart">chart</a>. Impressive, isn't it? I guess I should have been a stronger believer in the retailer. So, what should I be thinking now?</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/04/big-lots-earnings/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Big Lots Earnings: Should Investors Take Profits Now?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/04/big-lots-earnings/">Big Lots Earnings: Should Investors Take Profits Now?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 04 Mar 2011 09:20:00 EST. The NRF believes sales will increase 2.3% to $447.1 billion. The growth is slightly lower than the 10-year average of holiday sales increases (2.5%), but such an increase would be a major improvement over past years. In 2009 holiday sales improved 0.4%, slow but better than the 3.9% decline in 2008.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/10/06/national-retail-federation-expects-moderate-holiday-sales-increa/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>National Retail Federation Expects Moderate Holiday Sales Increase</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/10/06/national-retail-federation-expects-moderate-holiday-sales-increa/">National Retail Federation Expects Moderate Holiday Sales Increase</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 06 Oct 2010 15:20:00 EST. The one-year chart is a sad graphic for shareholders to look at. <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/big-lots-inc/big/nys/tech-chart">As can be seen</a>, the stock, which had previously displayed a significant amount of strength, is now in retreat mode. The attacking bears on Wall Street can be a scary force, to be sure. <br />
<br />
On Tuesday, shares of the retailer were off by 2.8%; at the end of the session, they settled at $30.86. That's still far off from the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/52-Week%20High,52-Week%20Low" class="inlinked">52-week low</a> of $23.04.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/25/big-lots-earnings-show-growth-what-about-the-stock/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Big Lots Earnings Show Growth -- What About the Stock?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/25/big-lots-earnings-show-growth-what-about-the-stock/">Big Lots Earnings Show Growth -- What About the Stock?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 25 Aug 2010 09:00:00 EST. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/big-lots-inc/big/nys" target="_blank">BIG</a>) was <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/22/analyst-upgrades-downgrades/" target="_blank">downgraded from overweight to neutral at JPMorgan</a>. The stock was downgraded because consumer spending is falling and is believed to remain tight -- and JPMorgan believes BIG is at the biggest risk because of its high discretionary exposure. The brokerage also noted that CEO Steve Fishman recently sold roughly 45% of his outstanding shares. <br />
<br />
Thanks to the downgrade and comments, BIG is roughly 7% lower on the day. That said, are we really at a decent entry point on BIG?<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/22/is-big-lots-really-a-buy/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Is Big Lots Really a Buy?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/22/is-big-lots-really-a-buy/">Is Big Lots Really a Buy?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 22 Jun 2010 18:00:00 EST. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/big-lots-inc/big/nys">BIG</a>) has been moving higher over the last twelve months. The <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/big-lots-inc/big/nys/tech-chart">chart</a> looks relatively nice. But do you want to buy now? There's been so much bearish sentiment that it's hard to tell if the moment is right for this or any stock.<br />
<br />

On an adjusted basis, net income from continuing operations jumped over 30% to $1.31 per share during the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/big-lots-reports-record-results/rfid305078978/?channel=pf">fourth quarter</a>. Analysts couldn't keep up, because they were looking for $1.28 per share, according to <a href="http://www.earnings.com/company.asp?client=cb&amp;ticker=BIG">Earnings.com</a>.</p>
<p>Total sales went up 7%, but <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/same%20store%20sales">same-store revenue</a>, the more vital metric, was higher by 5.1%. Cash flow from operating activities for both the quarter and the full fiscal year experienced significant increases. The jobs data this morning was anemic, but offered some hope, and the ISM services data was promising. Even the Beige Book looked more positive than before with low inflation worries. Yet traders sold the market after President Obama talked health care reform again. Today was a mini-bull that got away. <br />

This report is a compilation of anecdotal information on current economic conditions from each of the 12 Federal Reserve Bank districts, and it is released eight times a year. The data comes from interviews with business contacts, economists, market experts, and other sources. The previous report, released in January, showed <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/13/feds-beige-book-cites-some-improvement-in-economic-conditions/">some improvement</a> in most districts and growth in consumer spending over the holiday period, though unemployment remained high. The December report showed <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/12/02/feds-beige-book-reports-a-modest-improvement-in-the-economy/">modest improvement</a> in eight of the districts.</p>
<p>Retailers were in the <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/category/earnings-reports/">earnings spotlight</a> last week and for the most part made <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/23/retail-earnings-roundup-bks-hd-m-shld-tgt/">a strong showing</a> of it.
