Closing Bell: QE2 Giveth and Taketh Away (BIIB, BAC, BRCM, PGI, REE, BWLD)

Durable goods sounded good on the surface until the transportation component was removed and after a look at many sectors in business spending. The trend belief is now that quantitative easing (QE2) is going to be lower in dollars and be spread out over a longer period. This all leads to some give-back for stocks, and longer-term bond yields rose as well.

Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Biogen Idec Looks Bullish on Earnings Guidance

Biogen Idec (BIIB) improved its bullish prospects today as it announced earnings of $1.31 per share -- well above the Wall Street consensus estimate of $1.12 -- and raised its 2010 earnings outlook.

Total revenue for last quarter -- thanks in large part to better-than-expected sales of Biogen's multiple sclerosis drug Avonex -- came in at $1.2 billion, up 11% year over year.

Perhaps most exciting, however, was Biogen's announcement that it is raising its guidance for 2010 earnings to $4.70 per share, up from the current consensus of $4.57.

Biogen Multiple Sclerosis Drug Loses Out in Study

Biogen Idec (BIIB - option chain) stock is trading lower today on news that an FDA advisory committee recommended approval of Novartis' (NVS) FTY720 treatment for patients with relapsing multiple sclerosis. NVS said the drug worked better in trials than BIIB's drug Avonex. If you think this stock won't be rising too far in the coming months, then it could be a good time to look at a bearish hedged play on BIIB.

This morning, BIIB opened at $47.39. So far today the stock has hit a high of $47.62 and a low of $46.52. As of 12:30, BIIB is trading at $46.64, down $1.50 (-3.1%). The chart for BIIB looks neutral and S&P gives BIIB a neutral 3 STARS (out of 5) hold ranking.

Post Earnings, Biogen Idec (BIIB) Sees Unusual Options Activity

As my colleague Karla Yeh pointed out over at ONN.tv earlier today, Biogen Idec (BIIB) saw some unusual options trading in the wake of its positive earnings surprise before the bell.

BIIB gapped higher at the open, jumping almost 2% out of the gate. Less than a half hour into the trading day, large blocks of roughly 4,000 contracts each traded at four March strikes: the 45-strike put, the 50-strike put, the 55-strike call, and the 60-strike call. It appears as though this investor sold the March 50/55 strangle (the 50 put and the 55 call) and simultaneously purchased the March 45/60 strangle (the 45 put and the 60 call).

A short strangle is typically employed when the investor expects the underlying instrument to stay range-bound; a long strangle is used by traders who expect a sharp move in either direction. In this case, with one of each crossing the tape as part of one strategy, it can be referred to as an iron condor.

Closing Bell: The Awful Day That Wasn't So Awful (ARG, APD, JPM, CSCO, N, BIDU, BIIB)

A late day rally kept the fear mongers from winning hand over fist today. We were down as much as 160 points and a buying spree came in rapidly. The 9.7% unemployment left more questions when you consider that the jobs creation lost another 20,000 jobs. Today's late-day rally seemed like bargain hunting at the end of the day or short sellers closing out of positions ahead of the weekend after big selling all week. The huge loss that it looked like was suddenly a day where the positive or negative close was not going to known until the final minutes.

Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow 10,012.23 +10.05 (0.10%)
S&P 500 1,066.18 +3.07 (0.29%)
Nasdaq 2,141.12 +15.69 (0.74%)
