BJ's Wholesale club (BJ - option chain) shares rose Tuesday on news that private-equity firm Leonard Green & Partners has signed a confidentiality agreement with BJ's to discuss a possible buyout. If you think that the stock won't fall by too much in the coming months, then now could be a good time to look at a bullish hedged trade on BJ.

The stock opened Tuesday morning at $48.20. In morning trading, the stock hit a low of $47.14 and a high of $48.73. As of 12:15, BJ was trading at $48.55 up 2.03 (4.4%). The chart for BJ looks bullish and S&P gives BJ a positive 4 STARS (out of 5) buy ranking.

The Federal Reserve's next Beige Book report is scheduled to be released this week. This report is a compilation of anecdotal information on current economic conditions from each of the 12 Federal Reserve Bank districts, and it is released eight times a year. The data comes from interviews with business contacts, economists, market experts, and other sources. The previous report, released in January, showed some improvement in most districts and growth in consumer spending over the holiday period, though unemployment remained high. The December report showed modest improvement in eight of the districts.

Retailers were in the earnings spotlight last week and for the most part made a strong showing of it. Even as the earnings season winds down, some more retailers are scheduled to release quarterly results this week.

Costco (COST), a warehouse club that competes with BJ's (BJ) and Wal-Mart (WMT), reported Q1 numbers on Thursday. Earnings, which came in at 60 cents per share, were flat compared to last year's results. Not only that, but expectations were precisely met. Not exactly an exciting quarter, huh?

Total sales rose 6%, but same-store sales -- the more important statistic as it paints a better picture of the overall health of a retail business by indicating how well older stores are maintaining their growth characteristics -- increased 3%, excluding currency and fuel transactions.

Costco Wholesale Corp. (COST), the nation's largest largest wholesale club operator, is scheduled to discuss its financial results for the fiscal first quarter 2010 in a conference call Thursday, December 10, at 11:00 AM (ET). Speakers include CFO Richard A. Galanti. You can catch the live webcast of the call on the company's website.

The three months that ended in November saw Costco report strong monthly sales and declare a quarterly dividend. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expect Costco to report that its earnings fell a nickle per share from a year ago to $0.60 per share. But revenue for the quarter is expected to total $17.3 billion, 5.6% higher than a year ago.

The sprinkling of quarterly results scheduled for this coming week include S&P 500 components AutoZone (AZO), Ciena (CIEN), H&R Block (HRB) and National Semiconductor (NSM), as well as Dollar General (DG), Imperial Sugar (IPSU), Krispy Kreme Doughnuts (KKD), Men's Wearhouse (MW), Talbots (TLB) and others.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expect to see strong year-over-year and sequential EPS growth from luxury watchmaker Movado Group Inc. (MOV). During its third quarter of fiscal 2010, this Paramus, N.J.-based company was recognized for its innovative use of technology and it reported a big profit decline for the second quarter.

BJ's Wholesale Club (BJ), whose competitive colleagues include Costco Wholesale Corporation (COST) and Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (WMT), issued Q3 results earlier today. According to TheStreet.com, adjusted earnings of 45 cents per share met expectations.

And apparently that wasn't good enough for the traders. As of this writing, shares of BJ's were trading down 3% on above-average volume. Was the BJ's story that bad?
