Stocks Surge at the Open as Jobless Claims Plunge

U.S. stocks opened the trading session with the Dow Jones Industrial Average surging 125 points at the open. The Nasdaq Composite and S&P 500 also soared over 1%. The market responded partly to weekly jobless claims figures, which plunged to a nearly three-year low.

Overseas, positive sentiment ruled the European markets today. While STOXX Europe 600 Index has advanced 0.94%, London's FTSE 100 Index moved up 1.29%.

The week in preview: Eye on apparel and tech earnings

Last week we got a good look at how the apparel retailers have been doing when JCPenney Inc. (NYSE: JCP), Kohl's Corp. (NYSE: KSS), Nordstrom Inc. (NYSE: JWN), and Urban Outfitters Inc. (NASDAQ: URBN) all reported better-than-expected earnings for the most recent quarter. On the other hand, Abercrombie & Fitch Co. (NYSE: ANF), Eddie Bauer Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: EBHI), Liz Claiborne Inc. (NYSE: LIZ), and Macy's Inc. (NYSE: M) reported quarterly losses, reflecting the ongoing reluctance of consumers to spend.

Teen retailers buck the trend with strong sales

Retail is abysmal right now, and apparel is getting totally hammered.

But one segment of that market is holding up pretty well: clothing for teens. The USA Today reports that Buckle (NASDAQ: BKE), Hot Topic (NASDAQ: HOTT), and Aéropostale (NYSE: ARO) were the only specialty stores this week to report positive same-store sales in March.

Mary Brett Whitfield, senior vice president at the management consulting and research firm Retail Forward, told the newspaper that "Teens are still growing and might actually need new clothes."

The Buckle, Inc. catches bears off-guard with solid 4Q results

Shares of trendy retailer The Buckle, Inc. (NYSE: BKE) are climbing today, boosted by a better-than-expected fourth-quarter earnings report. Net income rose 18% to $34.3 million, or 74 cents per share, while gross margin swelled to 46.1%. Ahead of the report, analysts were expecting a quarterly profit of 73 cents per share.

The Buckle reported that net sales for the quarter increased by 22% to $251.4 million, thanks to a 14.3% spike in same-store sales. Sales at stores open for at least one year escalated 21% in February, marking the 19th consecutive month of double-digit same-store sales growth.

  • Eagle Bulk Shipping (NASDAQ:EGLE) was upgraded to Neutral from Underperform at Merrill Lynch.
  • Centene (NYSE:CNC) was raised to Buy from Neutral at Goldman.
  • Ralcorp (NYSE:RAH) was upgraded at Credit Suisse to Outperform from Neutral.
  • Interpublic Group (NYSE:IPG) was upgraded to Equal Weight from Underweight at Morgan Stanley.
Analyst downgrades:
  • Keefe Bruyette downgraded Healthcare Realty(NYSE:HR) to Market Perform from Outperform on concerns the company's development activity could be dilutive to near-term earnings.
  • Citigroup downgraded Satyam (NYSE:SAY) to Sell from Buy as they believe the company's acquisition plans, and subsequent cancellation of the deals, will lessen investor confidence in the name.
  • Oppenheimer downgraded Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) to Perform from Outperform citing Steve Jobs cancellation of his annual key note speech at Macworld on January 6. The analyst said the unexpected announcement underscores Apple's long-term dependence on Job's health and its lack of succession plan.
  • Baird downgraded Carlisle NYSE:CSL)to Neutral from Outperform.
  • Gibraltar Industries (NASDAQ:ROCK) was downgraded at Piper Jaffray to Sell from Buy.
  • NetApp (NASDAQ:NTAP) was cut to Accumulate from Buy at ThinkPanmure.
Analyst initiations:
  • Citigroup believes the acquisition of Barr enhances Teva's (NASDAQ:TEVA) growth. The firm started shares with a Buy rating and $52 target.
  • Suntrust initiated American Express (NYSE:AXP) with a Reduce citing slowing growth and greater-than-industry deterioration in credit quality.
  • Roth Capital initiated The Buckle (NYSE:BKE) with a Hold rating and $17 target citing the deteriorating macro environment.
  • Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Allegheny Tech (NYSE:ATI) were assumed with Neutral ratings and targets of $52 and $26, respectively, at UBS.
  • Digital Realty (NYSE:DLR) was initiated at Piper Jaffray with a Buy rating.
