In <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/11/chasing-value-ten-stocks-for-2010-part-1/">Part 1 of this series,</a> I discussed breaking up my potential picks into three categories: contender, on the fence, and out of the running until the 10 stocks have been identified.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Four contenders have been considered so far: American Eagle Outfitters (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/american-eagle-outfitters-inc-new/aeo/nys">AEO</a>), Anadarko Petroleum (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/anadarko-petroleum-corporation/apc/nys">APC</a>), Anglo American ADR (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/anglo-american-plc-american-depositary-shares-exempt-pursuant-to-12g3-2-b/aauk/nas">AAUKY</a>) and Diageo plc (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/diageo-p-l-c/deo/nys">DEO</a>).</p>
<p>Six more are included in today's review: EZCorp Inc. (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/ezcorp-inc/ezpw/nas">EZPW</a>)<span style="font-weight: bold;"></span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;"></span>General Electric Company (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/general-electric-company/ge/nys">GE</a>)<span style="font-weight: bold;"></span>, Wells Fargo &amp; Company (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wells-fargo-and-company/wfc/nys">WFC</a>)<span style="font-weight: bold;"></span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;"></span>Annaly Capital Management ( <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/annaly-capital-management-inc/nly/nys">NLY</a>)<span style="font-weight: bold;"></span>, Intuitive Surgical Inc (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/intuitive-surgical-inc/isrg/nas">ISRG</a>) plus Berkshire Hathaway (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/berkshire-hathaway-inc-cl-b/brk.b/nys">BRK.B</a>). These include the remaining five from 2009 and one more familiar to most investors.<br /></p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/12/chasing-value-ten-stocks-for-2010-part-2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Chasing Value: Ten stocks for 2010 -- Part 2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/12/chasing-value-ten-stocks-for-2010-part-2/">Chasing Value: Ten stocks for 2010 -- Part 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 12 Nov 2009 15:00:00 EST. The market enjoyed CSX's Q3 earnings report so much it sent shares of the company higher by 2.6%.</p>
<p>What was so good about the data? And for better or worse, numbers from the big financials have begun to roll in. Last week we saw profit sink for <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/jpmorgan-and-chase-and-co/jpm/nys">JPMorgan Chase</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/jpmorgan-and-chase-and-co/jpm/nys">JPM</a>) and significant losses from <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/bank-of-america-corporation/bac/nys">Bank of American Corp.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/bank-of-america-corporation/bac/nys">BAC</a>), <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/citigroup-incorporated/c/nys">Citigroup Inc.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/citigroup-incorporated/c/nys">C</a>), and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/deutsche-bank-ag-germany/db/nys">Deutsche Bank</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/deutsche-bank-ag-germany/db/nys">DB</a>).</p>
<p>Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expect <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-bank-of-new-york-mellon-corporation/bk/nys">Bank of New York Mellon Corp.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-bank-of-new-york-mellon-corporation/bk/nys">BK</a>) to be among those financials reporting fourth-quarter earnings growth this week. They anticipate that Bank of New York will post a profit of $0.70 per share, compared to $0.67 per share a year ago and $0.72 in the previous quarter. Revenue is expected come to $3.8 billion, about the same as it was a year ago. Bank of New York has fallen short of earnings estimates in two of the past five quarters, by as much as 11.1%. For the full year, analysts are looking for $2.78 per share (+5.8%) on $14.8 billion (+4.2%). The consensus recommendation of analysts is to buy BK, and the long-term EPS growth rate forecast is 10.7%. Shares are 48.7% lower than a year ago. <p>The contributing editor to <a href="http://www.thestockadvisors.com/ccount/click.php?id=2615">Gordon Pape's Internet Wealth Builder</a> explains, "Several rail stocks are starting to look attractive at these depressed levels and <a href="http://www.thestockadvisors.com/ccount/click.php?id=2615">Burlington Northern</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/burlington-northern-santa-fe-corporation/bni/nys">BNI</a>) remains my preferred choice in the group." Here's his outlook.</p>
<p>"Even with the economic downturn starting to bite, reduced fuel costs and increased freight rates offset lower volumes. Equally important, the companies remain cautiously optimistic despite the miserable outlook.</p>
<p>"They are confident that further freight rate price increases in the 4% to 5% range are sustainable and will still allow them to undercut inefficient truckers.</p>
<p>"Unfortunately, none of this prevented the stocks from being battered during the market collapse. However, I think that fourth-quarter profits are likely to remain strong and the longer term outlook for railroads remains favorable.</p>
<p>"Burlington Northern continues to power ahead. A shrinking economy must eventually take its toll but there was no sign of any weakness in BNI's third-quarter results. Operating earnings came in at $1.91 a share, up 29% from $1.48 in 2007.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/12/11/burlington-northern-bni-on-the-right-track/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Burlington Northern (BNI): On the right track</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/12/11/burlington-northern-bni-on-the-right-track/">Burlington Northern (BNI): On the right track</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 11 Dec 2008 10:10:00 EST. <p>In the <a href="http://www.thestockadvisors.com/ccount/click.php?id=2303">Oxford Insight</a>, the investment director explains, "It is now time to buy the 'ultimate no-brainer'." Here's his assessment.</p>
<p>"Despite this strong long-term performance, Buffett experienced a rare earnings letdown during the second quarter of this year. </p>
<p>"Although revenue increased 10% to $29.3 billion, insurance related write-downs hurt the company's bottom line. Still, the shortfall was far from cataclysmic. For the quarter, earnings fell 7.6% to $2.88 billion.</p>
<p>"Despite the shortfall, the company still maintains a top-notch credit rating and has over $28 billion in cash, a war chest for the world's greatest investor. How has Buffett been so successful? He takes a disciplined value approach to investing. And he sticks with it.<br /></p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/09/05/oxford-club-bet-on-buffett-a-no-brainer/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Oxford Club bet on Buffett: A 'no-brainer'</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/09/05/oxford-club-bet-on-buffett-a-no-brainer/">Oxford Club bet on Buffett: A 'no-brainer'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 05 Sep 2008 16:50:00 EST. <p>Through May, the S&amp;P 500 is down 5%. The interesting news to me is that some stocks have been doing phenomenally well. They appear to be benefiting from the weak dollar and strong demand for raw materials -- like oil and coal -- in emerging markets.</p>
<p>It happens that I picked three of them for my newsletter -- whose average stock has risen 26% since the beginning of 2008. Here are the top three -- and how much they've risen since their first mention there:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong><a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/walter-industries-inc/wlt/nys">Walter Industries</a></strong> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/walter-industries-inc/wlt/nys">WLT</a>) <strong>+124%.</strong> Walter is a coal, natural gas, and home construction and finance company that is spinning off the latter and is benefiting from rising coal prices. </li>
<li><strong><a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/southwestern-energy-company/swn/nys">Southwestern Energy</a></strong> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/southwestern-energy-company/swn/nys">SWN</a>) <strong>+36%.</strong> Southwest is an oil and gas explorer that was just added to the S&amp;P 500. </li>
<li><strong><a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/burlington-northern-santa-fe-corporation/bni/nys">Burlington Northern</a></strong> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/burlington-northern-santa-fe-corporation/bni/nys">BNI</a>) <strong>+24%.</strong> Burlington runs trains and Warren Buffett owns its stock. <a href="http://www.istockanalyst.com/article/viewarticle+articleid_1977493~zoneid_Home.html">One analyst</a> boosted 2008 EPS estimates from $5.90 to $6.05 due to fuel surcharges and rate increases, partially offset by significantly higher unhedged fuel costs and flat-to-modestly-lower volumes. </li>

<p>The contributing editor to <a href="http://www.thestockadvisors.com/ccount/click.php?id=2027">Gordon Pape's Internet Wealth Builder</a> states, "The logical conclusion: buy rail stocks now." Here he looks at <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/kansas-city-southern-united-states/ksu/nys">Kansas City Southern</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/kansas-city-southern-united-states/ksu/nys">KSU</a>) and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/burlington-northern-santa-fe-corporation/bni/nys">Burlington Northern Santa Fe</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/burlington-northern-santa-fe-corporation/bni/nys">BNI</a>).</p>
<p>"Who would have thought it? Railways are having a good year. They were supposed to be hunkered down, riding out the recession. Instead, the old iron horse is thriving. </p>
<p>"Surging demand for commodities is more than offsetting a slump in building materials shipments. Even higher energy costs are proving a plus for the railroads. Each jump in oil prices gives them a bigger edge over their gas guzzling competitors: trucks. </p>
<p>"Most important, the rails are able to raise rates despite the economic downturn. Their surcharges are sticking. Yet the stocks are out of favour. </p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/05/29/ksu-and-bni-riding-the-rails-to-profits/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>KSU &amp; BNI: Riding the rails to profits</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/05/29/ksu-and-bni-riding-the-rails-to-profits/">KSU &amp; BNI: Riding the rails to profits</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 29 May 2008 10:29:00 EST. Then the globalization era dawned, with its exports and demand for commodities. Add a price of oil that's basically risen for 10 years and the results is: the rails are back. And with the above in mind, <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/burlington-northern-santa-fe-corporation/bni/nys">Burlington Northern</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/burlington-northern-santa-fe-corporation/bni/nys">BNI</a>) is worth an evaluation.
<p>With 32,000 miles of track in the western U.S. and two Canadian provinces, Burlington Northern accounts for about 45% of the west's traffic and about 23% of U.S. rail traffic. </p>
<p>Analysts see 2008 revenue growth of about 6-8%, down from double-digit growth a year earlier, but still healthy. Margins should remain solid, with modest pricing power. <a href="http://stocks.us.reuters.com/stocks/estimates.asp?symbol=bni">The Reuters F2008/F2009 EPS consensus estimates</a> for BNI are $5.92/$6.81. </p>
<p>Even better: like the three other major U.S. railroads, BNI is in a relative sweet spot until the United States determines its energy policy for the 21st century. Or should one say 'if the United States determines its energy policy for the 21st century.' Investors will carefully note that the value Wall Street attaches to rail stocks pretty much mirrors the price of oil's ascent, due to the higher truck transportation costs implied by a higher price of oil. </p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/04/01/burlington-northern-is-the-transportation-sweet-spot/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Burlington Northern (BNI) is the transportation sweet spot</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/04/01/burlington-northern-is-the-transportation-sweet-spot/">Burlington Northern (BNI) is the transportation sweet spot</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 01 Apr 2008 15:48:00 EST.
