Further, given the better than 50% gain, if you bought Canadian Natural Resources when first discussed here at the split-adjusted price of $31.80 on May 24, 2010, now may be a good time to consider taking some profits off the table with CNQ.
Continue reading Canadian Natural Resources: Oil Sands Sector Winner

Canadian Natural Resources: Oil Sands Sector Winner originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 05 Apr 2011 09:30:00 EST. Excluding one-time items, RY earned C$1.26 per share, topping analysts' forecasts of C$1.01 per share. If you think that the stock won't fall by too much in the coming months, then now could be a good time to look at a bullish hedged trade on RY.

RY opened this morning at $61.32. So far today the stock has hit a low of $60.96 and a high of $62.29. As of 12:10, RY is trading at $61.46 up $2.85 (4.9%). The chart for RY looks bullish and S&P gives RY a positive 4 STARS (out of 5) buy ranking.

Continue reading Royal Bank of Canada Surges on Q1 Earnings

Royal Bank of Canada Surges on Q1 Earnings originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 03 Mar 2011 13:40:00 EST. (BCE) in the latest issue of The Canada Report newsletter.

I originally advised buying the stock in December 2008 when it was trading at $17.76 following the collapse of a multi-billion dollar bid to take the company private. At the time, I felt that investors were overreacting to the news and throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

Continue reading BCE Still a Buy

BCE Still a Buy originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 17 Feb 2011 16:40:00 EST.
Suncor, which I first wrote about on February 5, 2009 at a price of $18.35, has chopped and bounced its way up to the $40-level, primarily largely on oil's sustained, higher price -- necessary to make higher-cost oil-sands extraction profitable.

But to say the rise has had its fits-and-starts would be an understatement: $4 weekly gains are followed $3 losses.

Further, if you're in/at near $18.35, now may be a good time to consider taking some profits with SU.
Continue reading Suncor Energy Chops Above $40

Suncor Energy Chops Above $40 originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 31 Jan 2011 16:30:00 EST. It's a Canadian company, based in Montreal, with production facilities in the Caribbean and Latin America that turn out a wide range of low-priced clothing from socks to sportswear.

It seems people can't get enough of what Gildan has to offer and profits are soaring. The company earned $0.50 a share in the third quarter, up from $0.32 a year ago and then announced it would begin paying quarterly dividends of $0.075 a share in 2011. Gildan also announced a buyback program for up to one million shares.
Continue reading Gildan Activewear: They Can't Make Product Fast Enough

Gildan Activewear: They Can't Make Product Fast Enough originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 20 Dec 2010 17:30:00 EST. Here's where you'll find information about profitable investing in America's northern neighbor.

Why should you care? Start with this fact, which may surprise you. Over the five years to Oct. 28, Canada's benchmark stock index, the S&P/TSX Composite, has gained 21.8% -- and remember this period includes the worst market meltdown since the 1930s. What did the S&P 500 do in that time? It lost 1.2%.

There's more. Those figures are in local currencies. In fact, the Canadian dollar has been steadily appreciating against the U.S. greenback since 2002 and is now up more than 60% since that time. So Americans who put some of their money in Canada not only enjoyed stock market profits but they also benefited from exchange rate gains.
Continue reading Investing in Canada Pays Off

Investing in Canada Pays Off originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 29 Oct 2010 11:30:00 EST. The slightest whisper of a weather change can move grains by large magnitudes. And with crops in Canada and China in danger of freezing, some grains recorded two-year highs.

Western Canada experienced frost last week, damaging the region's crops, including wheat, canola and barley. Similarly, parts of China also experienced freezing weather, threatening some grain crops there. Meanwhile, in Russia, the severe drought, which caused the country to ban wheat exports, is continuing. Russian farmers have planted 39% less winter grains this year, according to Bloomberg.
Continue reading Corn, Wheat and Soybean Prices Surge Higher on Weather Problems

Corn, Wheat and Soybean Prices Surge Higher on Weather Problems originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 20 Sep 2010 10:00:00 EST. My team is the Columbus Blue Jackets, but I have come to appreciate good hockey as a whole. Last night, I hunkered down with my wife and brother-in-law to watch the USA take on Canada in the Olympics. What a game. Some are calling it the biggest upset since 1980's Miracle on Ice. I will play into the hype, although these were pros versus pros and anything can happen.

That said, I have to express a few opinions about the game. First, let's start with NHL Commissioner (or should I say uber-villain) Gary Bettman. Bettman believes that NHL players shouldn't compete in the Olympics because it takes away from the NHL itself. Really? The fact that your games are on Versus and once a week on NBC doesn't? How many times can the American public be force-fed Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin? Great players, but there are other players in the NHL.

Continue reading JockStocks: Wrapping Up the USA/Canada Hockey Game

JockStocks: Wrapping Up the USA/Canada Hockey Game originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 22 Feb 2010 13:00:00 EST. For the full-year 2009, SU's oil sands production should increase an impressive 30-35%.
Continue reading Suncor Energy Remains in Uptrend

Suncor Energy Remains in Uptrend originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 08 Jan 2010 17:00:00 EST. But is it really doing what it's supposed to? This Wall Street Journal article takes a look at an American company that is losing a good deal of its business to foreign competition -- thanks to the Buy American provisions.

Apparently, there is growing resentment toward America for the Buy American provisions that has lead to a Buy Canadian campaign. In fact, one town in Canada (Halton Hills) is cited as one of roughly a dozen Canadian communities that are trying to freeze out American companies. The town's mayor stated, "We won't be taking any products from any country that is discriminating against us."
Continue reading 'Buy American' hurting America?

'Buy American' hurting America? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 17 Sep 2009 10:30:00 EST. As stocks go up, Gordon Pape, one of Canada's leading experts on mutual funds and the editor of The Canada Report, says that Americans get stock appreciation and a currency bonus - making investing in Canadian stocks more profitable than U.S. stocks.
And now, says Pape, is an especially good time to invest since stocks and the Canadian dollar have recently taken a breather.

We caught up with Gordon Pape to talk to him about earning market profits plus a currency bonus.
Continue reading Guru Strategy: Americans should turn to Canada for outsized returns

Guru Strategy: Americans should turn to Canada for outsized returns originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 23 Jun 2009 15:50:00 EST. This week, I spoke with Gordon Pape, editor of The Canada Report, who thinks Toronto may have seen its lows, and he's cautiously optimistic on the loonie, too.

Q. Gordon, since we last spoke, global markets have lost nearly half their value, and the Toronto Stock Exchange's Composite Index has dropped from more than 15,000 to just over 8,700. Have we hit bottom?

A. We are cautiously optimistic, but the recent trillion-dollar bond purchase plan announced by the Federal Reserve is great news for Canada. The flood of cash will likely spur inflation, drive down the value of the US dollar, and raise the price of commodities. It's no surprise that gold [rose] almost $60 an ounce and oil [got] back over $50 a barrel. The Canadian stock market is heavily weighted to commodities, so we are seeing a big lift. I still expect a lot of volatility in the coming months. However, the March 6th TSE low of 7,480 may turn out to have been the bottom for this cycle.

Continue reading Global Q&A: Has Canada turned the corner?

Global Q&A: Has Canada turned the corner? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 01 Apr 2009 11:30:00 EST. Just recently Lloyds Banking Group PLC (NYSE: LYG) ceded 75% of its assets to the government of Britain, and Citigroup Inc. (NYSE: C) closed at $1.05 on Monday. Let's not forget JP Morgan Chase & Company (NYSE: JPM) has $87.7 trillion worth of outstanding OTC contracts as of September 30. JPM will not disclose how much of this is toxic.

However, it seems this is not the case everywhere. In Canada, for example, banks look healthier.
Continue reading In Canada you will find good, old-fashioned bankers

In Canada you will find good, old-fashioned bankers originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 10 Mar 2009 12:15:00 EST. The nation faces the same issue as America. If the car companies go bust,, tens of thousands of people will lose their jobs early next year. That would be a huge strain of the Canada tax base and the cost of its social services for the unemployed.

The money being offered to the two American cars companies is barely enough to last them for a couple of weeks based on the rate at which they are burning cash, so decisions by the U.S. Congress and the Obama administration will still be the sole determinant of what happens to the big firms.

According to Reuters, "General Motors of Canada Ltd is eligible for loans of up to $C3 billion and Chrysler Canada Inc for up to C$1 billion." The U.S. aid package is $17.4 billion, so capital coming from north of the border is barely a drop in the bucket.

The Canadians better start lobbying Washington and lobbying successfully. Otherwise their auto industry will go down with the one in the U.S.

After several refreshes when the zeroes didn't budge, I even panicked. Then I saw the headline (how did I miss it before) that trading was halted on the Toronto Stock Exchange and TSX Venture Exchange due to a computer glitch. Not only that, but there's also no estimate when trading will resume.

The exchanges have actually failed to open at the regular time of 9:30 a.m. EST, and as one reporter put it "have been dead in the water since." If this is frustrating and stressful for me, I can't imagine what the mood is like on Bay Street; how traders and other market professionals must feel.

I'm not sure what could be done if there are big swings and news out of the U.S. While it's true the Canadian markets don't totally track their American counterparts, as they're heavily weighted in oil and commodities and react to news from those sectors often, they are still affected by what's going on at Canada's biggest trading partner to the south.

Still, it may not be the end of the world as the Canadian holidays also don't exactly follow the American ones and there are days when the TSE is closed while the American markets are open. Also, there are four alternative trading systems in Canada, two at least have reported to be functioning and operational. While volumes there were higher than usual for these system, they were hardly normal for the market as a whole. No doubt, though, these systems will get a boost following this fiasco.
Continue reading Canadian markets halted due to a glitch -- can it happen in the U.S.?

Canadian markets halted due to a glitch -- can it happen in the U.S.? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 17 Dec 2008 15:36:00 EST.
