Early tests of Pfizer's cancer drug crizotinib, while only preliminary, have generated a fair amount of excitement among cancer treatment researchers. The drug, which targets a genetic factor among specific lung cancer patients, has reportedly been shown to reduce the size of tumors caused by that disease.

Continue reading Pfizer Cancer Drug Could Boost Shares

Pfizer Cancer Drug Could Boost Shares originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 07 Jun 2010 10:30:00 EST. Reportedly, two studies of kidney cancer drug Sutent did not show a significant benefit to advanced breast cancer patients when combined with chemotherapy.

This news is definitely a setback for PFE, as it was hoped that Sutent could demonstrate a significant benefit when combined with chemotherapy as opposed to treatment by chemotherapy alone.
Continue reading Pfizer Sees Some Disappointing Study Results

Pfizer Sees Some Disappointing Study Results originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 12 Mar 2010 10:30:00 EST. And with the above in mind, Celgene is worth a review.

Celgene (NASDAQ: CELG) develops and markets drugs to treat cancer, immunological disorders and other diseases. The company's research concentrates on small molecule compounds that inhibit tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFa) production or aberrant estrogen production, or that may regulate kinases and ligases (enzymes).

Analysts really like the revenue growth rate for Revlimid, which received U.S. FDA approval in 2005, and treats a malignant blood disease called MDS. In 2006, Revlimid also received FDA approval to treat myeloma. Total Revlimid revenue should exceed $1.7-$1.8 billion in 2008. Further, mainstay Thalomid, which treats bone marrow cancer, rounds-out an impressive one-two signature drug duo. Also, the near-term re-acquisition of European rights for Thalomid will expand Celgene's geographic footprint.
Continue reading Celgene remains a top-tier biopharmaceutical

Celgene remains a top-tier biopharmaceutical originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 29 Apr 2008 12:32:00 EST. This article is part of his 24th annual Top Picks Report.

Sonus Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: SNUS) is the top speculative pick for 2007 from John McCamant. The editor of The Medical Technology Stock Letter says, "Sonus is one of the more exciting companies in the biotech investment arena.

"The firm is intently focused on the development of superior versions of existing cancer drug treatments that not only offer potentially improved efficacy, but also significantly more attractive safety profiles. Their lead product candidate, TOCOSOL Paclitaxel, is a reformulated version of paclitaxel, which belongs to the taxane class of chemotherapeutics -- which are among the most successful and frequently used.

"However, existing treatments have unattractive safety profiles; Sonus's treatment may be a significant improvement, and we will not have to wait much longer to find out. SNUS just recently completed enrollment in their over 800-patient Phase III trial for metastatic breast cancer treatment. We can expect results in the second half of next year, and if positive, the company will file for approval by the end of 2007.
