The editor of Dow Theory Forecasts explains, "Though the court case may distract investors, Qualcomm's long-term fundamentals appear solid." Here's his bullish outlook.

"The company is embroiled in disputes over royalty fees paid for use of its patents, particularly by one of its largest customers, Nokia. In March, the combatants agreed to consolidate a host of lawsuits into one case to be heard later this year and likely to be decided by year's end.

"Barring a disastrous court loss, which seems unlikely, Qualcomm shares should benefit. Any resolution will reduce uncertainty. By the end of this year, Qualcomm should be able to jettison some of the baggage holding back its stock.

"While the U.S. economic slowdown has sparked fears of a decline in demand for microchips, Qualcomm should benefit as cell-phone users worldwide transition to third-generation technology, which allows for faster downloading of video, music and other data.

Continue reading Qualcomm (QCOM): Legal worries create buying opportunity

Qualcomm (QCOM): Legal worries create buying opportunity originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 16 May 2008 11:48:00 EST. This article is one of 100+ ideas in the Best Stocks for 2008 report.

"My top conservative stock idea for 2008 is Apple Inc (NASDAQ: AAPL)," says Nate Pile, editor of Nate's Notes. "Though the stock is likely to remain exceptionally volatile in the months ahead, we believe that shares of Apple will be trading significantly higher than they are today by the end of 2008.

"And, while most analysts and investors are continuing to focus on sales of iPods and iPhones as the primary catalysts for growth, we remain convinced that it will actually be the company's computer division that provides the biggest upside surprises for investors over the next several quarters.

"After turning Apple's fortunes around via the introduction of the iPod several years ago (and wooing a whole new generation of young computer users over to the Mac platform via the "coolness factor" associated with the iPod in the process), it appears that Steve Jobs is on the verge of duplicating the feat again.

"Only this time, he is doing it with an even more important group of potential customers -- namely, corporate executives who, by all accounts, are loving their new iPhones just as much as college kids (and adults!) love their iPods.

Continue reading Best Stocks for 2008: More 'buzz' for Apple (AAPL)

Best Stocks for 2008: More 'buzz' for Apple (AAPL) originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 19 Dec 2007 15:30:00 EST. I had a chance to meet with many of the advisors featured at the show, and I will be highlighting some of their favorite investment ideas. To view all of the stocks featured in this special global report, click here.

One of the most popular sectors among advisors at this year's World Money Show was telecom, and John Christy sees long-term opportunity in two leading cell phone makers.

The editor of The Forbes International Investment Report explains, "Fourth quarter earnings for mobile phone maker Finland's Nokia (NYSE:NOK) knocked the cover off the ball. Net income rose nearly 20% to $1.7 billion, beating analyst forecasts.

"And even though the average selling price for its handsets fell, NOK was still able to boost its profit margins. Nokia is also jacking up its dividend by 16%, and is buying back 4 billion euros worth of stock.

"Growth in the Asia-Pacific region topped 60% -- an encouraging sign that the company's strategy of focusing on emerging markets is paying off. Nokia is also planning to roll out a fresh new line of more than 30 handset models in 2007.

"Compare this to Motorola (NYSE:MOT), which has yet to come up with successful replacement for its popular RAZR phone, missed its latest quarter by a country mile, and is now under attack by activist investor Carl Icahn. I'd much rather own NOK.

Continue reading Global gains: Forbes expert sees cell phone profits

Global gains: Forbes expert sees cell phone profits originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 15 Feb 2007 20:30:00 EST.
