In Uncommon Wisdom, he looks to an ETF poised to benefit from long-term rising coal demand.

The advisor explains, "China's coal consumption is growing, and it is building coal-powered power plants at a breakneck pace.

"Why? Because they are much cheaper to build and operate than any other power-producing option. China is power starved, and coal is the main resource used for generating electricity in the country.

Continue reading Fired up over coal ETF

Fired up over coal ETF originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 21 Sep 2009 11:00:00 EST.

The editor of Half-Priced Stocks looks at industrial product firm Trinity Industries (NYSE: TRN), explaining, "The company's most promising division is involved in the production of structural wind towers." Here's the advisor's of the latest addition to his "deep-discount' model portfolio.

"Led by states such as Texas and California, wind farms around the country will generate almost 50 billion kilowatt hours of electricity this year. Of course, the U.S. is still playing catch-up with many other regions.

"In fact, countries such as Spain, Portugal and Denmark all rely on wind farms for as much as one-quarter of their total power needs. Across Europe, wind turbines will account for roughly one-third of all new generating capacity installed over the next few years and could provide electricity for 90 million people by 2010.

"The outlook is even brighter in many booming, energy-hungry Asian markets. In China, installed wind power capacity surged +130% last year and will reportedly supply a great deal of the electricity needed for the upcoming 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

"Thanks to the great strides in engineering, wind turbine output has increased by a factor of ten (or higher in some cases) over the past decade.

Continue reading Trinity (TRN): Value play in wind power

Trinity (TRN): Value play in wind power originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 19 Aug 2008 13:11:00 EST.
"Tons of power is being consumed in China, and Huaneng is right there to serve it up - the company is China's largest independent power producer. All told, Huaneng owns 17 plants outright, controls another 12, and has minority interests in five power companies.

"Profits have been rolling in at a steady clip. However, investors have recently become concerned about shrinking profit margins at Chinese utilities.

"There is certainly cause for concern: Coal is the main power source for utilities' plants, and the price of the raw material has been rising because of increased demand around the world. To make matters worse, the severe winter weather that struck China in January pushed up coal prices even further and created a
whole host of other challenges for Chinese utilities.

"However, it looks to me like investors have been far too aggressive in their selling. They're now pricing Huaneng at 10.5 times next year's earnings. The stock is so oversold that it's currently yielding 5.3%.

"What about the coal situation? Well, I think supply and demand will come back in line, and I also think this politically well-connected company will be granted price hikes to compensate for its higher input costs. I recommend income investors buy at the market."

The editor of the China Stock Digest explains, "We recently issued a buy recommendation on Yanzhou Coal Mining (NYSE: YZC) and since then, the stock has been sizzling."

The advisor notes, "Industrial production in China continues to rise even faster than the increase in the nation's GDP. Yanzhou Coal is benefiting from a number of developing trends that give us confidence in higher valuations for this company. Unlike many other staple resources, coal prices are not strictly capped by the government, and prices are being squeezed upward by both supply and demand.

"Coal is by far the most important fuel for generating stations. Yanzhou Coal is an industry leader because of its proximity to the industrialized eastern region of China. In addition to being close to major industrial markets, the company operates a number of rail lines, giving it priority in its access to steel and power generation markets.

"Record high oil prices will continue to push the demand for coal. We believe Yanzhou Coal is uniquely positioned to continue to reward investors with stable growth and dividend returns.

"The company saw annual earnings per share growth of more than 100% over the past 12 months compared to the same period a year ago, justifying the estimated P/E ratio of 17. Yanzhou returned a dividend of 1.5% for the trailing 12-month period."
