China is a big player in most markets; however, when it comes to technology, powerful local companies hold sway. Last year Google (GOOG) fought a battle to keep its website in China. A couple of years ago, China set rules whereby all Internet content had to pass through censors before being approved.
Continue reading Skype Could Face Charges in China

Skype Could Face Charges in China originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Sun, 02 Jan 2011 16:00:00 EST. These include Windows 7 slates and also $35 Indian tablets. There's even buzz that Research In Motion (RIMM) will come out with the BlackPad.

So, to keep up its lead, Apple is working furiously to build supply as well as penetrate new markets. And yes, it looks like the company will move into China, perhaps as early as next month. To this end, China Unicom (CHU) will be the exclusive carrier for the iPad. This will also include the distribution of the highly popular iPhone 4.

Continue reading iPad's Next Stop? Although the Chinese really weren't all that impressed by the device's requirement of an expensive calling plan from Apple partner China Unicom, the iPhone has sold fairly well since its debut. Or, it has sold poorly depending on your perspective.

In two months, China Unicom has sold a little over 100,000 Apple iPhones. Compare that with China Mobile, China Unicom's largest competitor and the largest mobile carrier in China, which apparently doesn't feel threatened by the lackluster sales performance of the iPhone. Indeed, a mobile market with a 1.3 billion potential customer base and the comparison of 100,000 handsets sold for a device that has seemingly revolutionized the entire mobile industry don't appear to belong in the same sentence, right?

Continue reading Apple iPhone sales pick up in China, but still at dismal pace

Apple iPhone sales pick up in China, but still at dismal pace originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 14 Dec 2009 12:30:00 EST. The news was not enough to carry CHU against the tide of falling Asian markets as an Apple spokeswomen confirmed that CHU will not be the exclusive carrier of the iPhone in China. If you think this stock won't be rising too far in the coming months, then it could be a good time to look at a bearish hedged play on CHU.

This morning, CHU opened at $14.00. So far today the stock has hit a low of $13.85 and a high of $14.02. As of 11:30, CHU is trading at $13.99, down 44 cents (-3.0%). The chart for CHU looks bearish and S&P gives CHU a negative 2 STARS (out of 5) sell ranking.
Continue reading China Unicom (CHU) will sell iPhone

China Unicom (CHU) will sell iPhone originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 31 Aug 2009 13:40:00 EST.
"With the world's largest population as its market, the mobile phone industry in China is set to soar. This makes China Unicom a compelling play. The firm has 21% market share in China.

"China Unicom's vice president recently said the company is targeting subscriber growth of 20 million to 30 million within a year. To put that into context, Verizon Wireless, the largest mobile phone carrier in the U.S., had 72.1 million subscribers at the end of last year.

Continue reading China Unicom (CHU): Set to soar?

China Unicom (CHU): Set to soar? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 01 Jul 2009 14:00:00 EST. The stock was down about 7% Monday off the news. The firm's stronghold on the mobile telecom market in China is now effectively weakened as China Telecom and Netcom can gear up to compete against China Mobile.

Why should this interest investors? Again, according to the Times, China had almost 600 million mobile phone users at the end of April, exceeding the combined populations of the United States and Japan. In the world's largest mobile market in terms of users, the $100 billion market is poised to ramp up given that just over half of all Chinese own mobile phones and a lot less than that have Internet connections.

Zack Miller is the lead equity analyst for America Israel Investment Associates, LLC., the managing editor of IsraelNewsletter.com an d a former equity analyst for a leading multinational hedge fund.
China Mobile drops as China restructures telecom industry originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 27 May 2008 12:34:00 EST.
