However, investors should keep in mind that Darden probably won't clear $60 in 2011, hence the potential, 1-year upside, while still adequate, probably won't be fantastic.

Darden is a restaurant sector survivor. Darden's same store sales (in this case, restaurants) will likely increase about 2% to 2.5% in fiscal 2011, after a roughly flat 2010. That doesn't sound like much of a revenue increase, but in the hard-hit restaurant sector, that's adequate.
Continue reading Has Darden's Pullback Created an Opportunity?

Has Darden's Pullback Created an Opportunity? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 19 Jan 2011 15:40:00 EST. While it's important that the payout is substantial in these type of income investments, it's also important for investors to focus on stocks raising dividends because this helps guarantee that a company won't leave shareholders in the lurch and slash payouts when times get a little tough. After all, if you buy in for the quarterly payday, the last thing you want is for your holdings to slash their dividend payouts or let them languish without any increases.
For all you income investors out there, here are three stocks from the last week that just raised dividends and could be good additions to your holdings:
Continue reading Income Investments: 3 Stocks That Are Boosting Their Dividends

Income Investments: 3 Stocks That Are Boosting Their Dividends originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 24 Jun 2010 16:40:00 EST. Here are 10 stocks to break up with this Valentine's Day.

1-800-Flowers (FLWS): A good gift, but a poorly run company that has posted a loss for three of the past four quarters.

Hershey (HSY): Missing out on the Cadbury merger was not so sweet for Hershey.

Cardiac Sciences (CSCX): It's hard to have a heart for a company that fails seven out of my eight fundamental screens.

TheStreet.com's Jim Cramer says a good shakeout on Monday would prepare us for a "fulcrum day" on Tuesday.

Could have been worse. With Research In Motion (NASDAQ: RIMM) (Cramer's Take) never lifting -- which was, by the way, wrong after a certain point -- and oil not rallying, you had no place to go. Last week we lost tech, banks, and oil. You can't even go up with just two of them, so to lose all three was dreadful.

I said last week that the calendar just didn't favor the bulls. The propensity to want to lock in gains ahead of the last weekend in September -- the one that is ended by the Yom Kippur holiday, which will always have thin trading -- is just too great.

Plus, don't forget that every month that is supposed to be bad gets tons of play for being bad: October! Ooooooo, scary! You know that's going to happen again.

Continue reading Cramer on BloggingStocks: Setting up for Tuesday

Cramer on BloggingStocks: Setting up for Tuesday originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 28 Sep 2009 09:30:00 EST. The Dow has been inching toward 10,000 for a while now, though it closed lower in the past three sessions. Can it make it to 10,000 for the start of the third quarter? If so, what will push it higher? If not, what will drag it down further?

The company also reported that sales increased to $1.97 billion from $1.82 billion. The eatery operator's sales were boosted by an extra week of business in the most recent quarter.

In a statement, the company's CEO Clarence Otis noted that the company is hoping for an improvement in overall restaurant industry conditions and sales trends, but the current challenging environment is likely to continue through all of fiscal 2010. Otis stated that "there are reasons to believe there might be some favorable changes. However, given the current level of uncertainty, we think it's prudent to be cautious in developing our plans for the year."
Continue reading Darden posts fourth-quarter earnings, can it boost the shares?

Darden posts fourth-quarter earnings, can it boost the shares? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 24 Jun 2009 10:30:00 EST.
This coming week should bring reports from more food-related companies, from cereal maker General Mills and food packager CongAgra to grocery chain Kroger, to the parent companies of restaurants Cracker Barrel, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Carl's Jr., and Hardees. Also look for reports from tech-related companies such as Oracle, Adobe, and Palm, as well as from financials Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs, and from economic bellwether FedEx.

Here's what analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial are expecting from some of the companies reporting earnings this week, as compared to their results from the same period of last year:

Continue reading The week in preview: Eyes on Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, FedEx

The week in preview: Eyes on Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, FedEx originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Sun, 14 Sep 2008 12:30:00 EST. There are tons of players -- so many that the competition got too hard. Now they collapse. That Uno might miss a payment, that Bennigan's and Steak & Ale are going away, that Bakers Square and Village Inn have filed for bankruptcy: All say the industry is in big trouble.

But ask yourself, if you are Darden (NYSE: DRI) (Cramer's Take), do you think this is a good or bad development? Room to go more upscale, perhaps?

We read all of these horrible articles every day about restaurants, and yet we see that the stocks of Yum! and Darden hang in great, particularly the first, which gave hideous guidance and yet is now higher than it was before it told people commodity costs were hurting it.
