Nutrisystem's 14-day "Starter Program" will start hitting Wal-Mart shelves in over 3,200 locations starting now -- and just in time for the holiday rush and also in time to become somewhat entrenched leading up to the 2010 New Year's holiday (and all those resolutions). Like many other brands, though, will this tarnish Nutrisystem's brand? Nah -- or Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) would have never allowed its chic and still uber-popular iPhone for sale inside Wal-Mart either.

Continue reading Wal-Mart to become first-ever retail partner for Nutrisystem

Wal-Mart to become first-ever retail partner for Nutrisystem originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 08 Oct 2009 12:40:00 EST. That said, one old wives' tale worth noting, and even following, is the January effect.

For whatever reason, small-cap stocks do indeed outperform their larger brethren during the month of January.

I recently provided a list of 5 Stocks for the January Effect. On the list was a former high-flyer that lost enough market value to now qualify as a small-cap stock -- NutriSystem (NASDAQ: NTRI).

NutriSystem captured the investor imagination with its unique solution to weight loss and weight management. The company's home delivery of prepackaged meals promised ease of use with results.

Given the huge audience for such a solution, NTRI presented investors with a great growth opportunity. Even though it took a few years to catch on, investors eventually got the idea.

NutriSystem became a darling of the momentum crowd in 2005. In the span of a year and a half, the stock moved from the single digits to above $80 per share. Coinciding with a big marketing program, revenue and investors seemed to grow in tandem.

That's all well and good, but at some point valuation does matter. That time usually comes when growth or results fail to meet elevated expectations. For NTRI, that started to happen in mid-2007.

In no time flat the stock lost more than half its value as the momentum crowd fled. The stock has been trading on a flat line around $15 per share for most of 2008.

Continue reading Weight loss goes wholesale -- buy NutriSystem (NTRI)

Weight loss goes wholesale -- buy NutriSystem (NTRI) originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 06 Jan 2009 13:15:00 EST. So does Consumer Reports.

Notice that the word "diet" is not mentioned. "Diet" implies temporary while "eating strategies" and another commonly used phrase "eating plan" implies permanent changes. The book "The Volumetrics Eating Plan" by Barbara Rolls, who is a professor in the department of nutritional sciences at Pennsylvania State University, is worth a read for anyone looking to take control of their nutrition for the long term rather than just lose a few pounds for the summer.

The runner-up is the review was the Weight Watchers International Inc. (NYSE: WTW) diet plan (I'm a fan of this one) and Jenny Craig also came in a very close third.

The rest? Well, do your homework and see if there are solid tracts of science behind whatever diet plan you choose -- and don't fall for the marketing hype or baseless celebrity endorsements.

It's easy to do.

From the recent Atkins Diet craze to the newest "Best Life Diet" that counts Oprah Winfrey as an endorser, there are many plans making claims to be the best.

As Consumer Reports shows, very few are worth the bother.

One beneficiary is NutriSystem (NASDAQ: NTRI) - a buy recommendation from small cap expert Tom Bishop.

The editor of BI Research says, "NutriSystem is knocking it out of the ballpark, beating estimates and raising guidance." The company markets and sells the food for its proprietary weight loss system, which is based on a low glycemic index.

Bishop notes the company increased revenues by 141% and earned $0.63 in its third quarter, up from $0.19 last year, which was a "big upside surprise" over Wall Street's estimates.

Helping the company has been its ad campaign, in which former Dolphin quarterback Dan Marino has been pitching the weight loss program. Notes Bishop, "Already 30% of its customers are men, who like the anonymity and do-it-at-home nature of the product." Next up will be promotions aimed at seniors, featuring coach Don Shula - another former Dolphin - and his wife.

Meanwhile, those who wish to oversee their own healthier diets may prefer Whole Foods Market (NASDAQ: WFMI), which recently shed some pounds itself. The stock took a major hit when its lowered its growth forecast for 2007 from 20% to 17%.

Todd Schoenberger, editor of Red Zone Profits, says, "This knee-jerk reaction by traders and investors has presented a wonderful buying opportunity."
