Shares were up 1.8% to $23.35. Volume was active. <br />
<p>
The stock has been in a very narrow range. The 52-week low is $21.02 while the 52-week high is $26.22. The one-year <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/conagra-foods-inc/cag/nys/tech-chart">chart</a> reflects the inability of the stock to break out to new levels. What should investors think about the company at this point now that some new numbers are out?<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/24/conagra-issues-q3-numbers/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>ConAgra Issues Q3 Numbers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/24/conagra-issues-q3-numbers/">ConAgra Issues Q3 Numbers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 24 Mar 2011 15:30:00 EST. The company's quarterly dividend <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/article/wal-mart-raises-dividend-21-percent-to/1633277/">was raised by 21%</a>. Very nice. So why are the shares off today?</p>
<p>To be fair, they were in positive territory earlier in the morning. Unfortunately, as I write this, with roughly three hours to go before the conclusion of the session, they are down 0.5% to $51.74. Perhaps they will be in the green by the end of the day. When you think about it, though, a 21% jump in a metric that is supposed to be friendly to investors should have received a lot more respect, correct?</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/04/wal-mart-ups-dividend-stock-is-down/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Walmart Boosts Dividend; Stock Falls</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/04/wal-mart-ups-dividend-stock-is-down/">Walmart Boosts Dividend; Stock Falls</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 04 Mar 2011 15:30:00 EST. Heinz Company (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/h-j-heinz-company/hnz/nys">HNZ</a>), a food concern famous for its ketchup product and whose colleagues include ConAgra (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/conagra-foods-inc/cag/nys">CAG</a>) and Campbell Soup (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/campbell-soup-company/cpb/nys">CPB</a>), closed today's session higher by 1.4%. The final quote of $49.66 isn't far at all from the 52-week high of $50.77. Is the stock a buy?<br />
<br />
You know, there's a very interesting element to this story, and it has to do with the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Dividend%20Yield">dividend yield</a>. Right now, Heinz's yield is 3.6%. That's pretty awesome. You've got take notice of a stock that is both near a 52-week high and possessive of a lofty yield.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/03/heinz-higher-on-earnings-news/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Heinz Higher on Earnings News</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/03/heinz-higher-on-earnings-news/">Heinz Higher on Earnings News</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 03 Mar 2011 18:00:00 EST. I rather enjoyed it. And I think the future may be bright for the retailer and arch enemy of Lowe's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/lowe-s-companies-inc/low/nys">LOW</a>). </p>
<p>According to <a href="http://www.thestreet.com/_aol/story/11017057/1/home-depot-hikes-dividend-lifts-forecast.html#">TheStreet.com</a>, net income calculated out to 36 cents per share for the fourth quarter. Smucker Company (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/the-j-m-smucker-company/sjm/nys">SJM</a>), a food concern in the same category as ConAgra Foods (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/conagra-foods-inc/cag/nys">CAG</a>) and Kraft Foods (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/kraft-foods-inc/kft/nys">KFT</a>), issued its fiscal third-quarter report on Thursday. The document wasn't too thrilling, but it shows that the business is holding its own in the competitive battlefield of the supermarket shelves. </p>
<p>Its adjusted profit of <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/article/smucker-earnings-boosted-by-higher/776742/">$1.27 per share</a> came in ahead of the overall projection by one penny. Nevertheless, it is the type of stock that many hold for the long term; it doesn't necessarily force one to put a lot of weight on any single three-month period. It's a story of brands, a thesis based on consumers and supermarket shelves. The future cash flows derived from these elements is what drives an investor to buy this company. </p>
<p>There's nothing wrong with keeping tabs on the business, though. According to the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/article/costs-to-combine-cadbury-cut-into-kraft/1580338/">Associated Press</a>, Kraft made, on an adjusted basis (the Cadbury purchase was involved in the adjustment process), 46 cents per share in the fourth quarter. This was a penny less than a year ago. The consensus estimate was for net income to come in at 46 cents per share. Yes, management failed to rise above the projection.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/11/kraft-earnings-dont-excite-but-yield-remains-attractive/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Kraft Earnings Don't Excite, but Yield Remains Attractive</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/11/kraft-earnings-dont-excite-but-yield-remains-attractive/">Kraft Earnings Don't Excite, but Yield Remains Attractive</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 11 Feb 2011 09:45:00 EST. One makes items used for cleaning, the other makes goods that you can actually eat.</p>
<p>We'll start with the cleaning-item concern. The Clorox Company (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/the-clorox-company/clx/nys">CLX</a>), manufacturer of the iconic laundry bleach, issued results for its fiscal second quarter earlier today. At the time of this writing, shares were higher by 2.4% to a quote of $65.26. Volume was strong. The 52-week low for the stock is $59.07 and the 52-week high is $69. The <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/the-clorox-company/clx/nys/tech-chart">one-year chart</a> is, well ... not that great.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/04/earnings-from-clorox-and-kellogg/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Earnings from Clorox and Kellogg</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/04/earnings-from-clorox-and-kellogg/">Earnings from Clorox and Kellogg</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 04 Feb 2011 17:40:00 EST. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/time-warner-inc/twx/nys">TWX</a>) will be reporting fourth-quarter numbers on Wednesday, February 2. How is the stock looking ahead of the release?<br />
<br />
The main point about the shares to me is that they are in a tight range. The 52-week low is $26.74 while the 52-week high is $34.07. The <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/time-warner-inc/twx/nys/tech-chart">chart</a> is an up-and-down affair as you might expect. While there definitely have been multiple opportunities at making money with this idea, I wonder how many investors tend to think of it as a great long-term vehicle. I know I don't. Time Warner, to me, is one I would trade instead of own at this point.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/31/time-warner-set-to-report-q4-earnings/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Time Warner Set to Report Q4 Earnings</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/31/time-warner-set-to-report-q4-earnings/">Time Warner Set to Report Q4 Earnings</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 31 Jan 2011 17:30:00 EST. The company behind the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup and the Kit Kat candies isn't expected to grow its bottom-line performance, but should shareholders panic?<br />
<br />
Probably not. Whether or not Hershey goes beyond the consensus estimate is, to some degree, not something for long-term investors to worry about. Last year at this time, net income came in at <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/02/hershey-improves-q4-profit-and-quarterly-payout/">63 cents</a> per share. According to <a href="http://www.earnings.com/company.asp?client=cb&amp;ticker=hsy">Earnings.com</a>, this year's quarterly profit may drop by two pennies to 61 cents per share.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/31/hershey-set-to-report-q4-numbers/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hershey Set to Report Q4 Numbers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/31/hershey-set-to-report-q4-numbers/">Hershey Set to Report Q4 Numbers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 31 Jan 2011 15:30:00 EST. First, it's not too far away from its 52-week high. Second, it's trading with an extremely nice <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Dividend%20Yield">dividend yield</a> attached. Those two elements can't help but make an investor take notice. </p>
<p>In fact, speaking about the dividend yield, <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/article/kimberly-clark-4q-net-flat-raises/439881/">according to the company's Q4 earnings results,</a> management has increased the quarterly payout by 6% to 70 cents per share. Excellent news. Based on Tuesday's closing price of $65.61, a quote that found the stock up by 2.6% on significant volume, the yield on the shares is now roughly 4.3%.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/26/should-we-be-bullish-on-kimberly-clark/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Should We Be Bullish on Kimberly-Clark?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/26/should-we-be-bullish-on-kimberly-clark/">Should We Be Bullish on Kimberly-Clark?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 26 Jan 2011 09:30:00 EST. I'm going to say the same thing about 3M's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/3m-company/mmm/nys">MMM</a>) release. I just don't believe that the weakness I'm currently seeing should be feared. <br />
<br />
With an hour to go before the end of the day as I write this, 3M is off by 2.8% to $87.80. I agree: a 2.8% retreat in a blue-chip equity isn't anything to immediately dismiss. But the 52-week low for this stock is $67.98, and the 52-week high is $91.49. The <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/3m-company/mmm/nys/tech-chart">chart</a> shows a company that seems to be fighting for higher levels. Perhaps the drop is a buying opportunity.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/25/3m-sold-on-q4-news-should-we-care/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>3M Sold on Q4 News: Should We Care?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/25/3m-sold-on-q4-news-should-we-care/">3M Sold on Q4 News: Should We Care?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 25 Jan 2011 17:00:00 EST. General Electric Company (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/general-electric-company/ge/nys">GE</a>) is up 7.9% to $19.89 as I write this. Volume is strong. I wish I could say I was participating in today's rally, but alas, I am not. Late last year, I sold out of my GE position, as I explain in <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/28/sold-ge-but-i-like-the-stock/">this article</a>. I obviously could have sold at a higher price, but hey, I needed to sell when I did; that's just how it goes. </p>
<p>I like the price action I'm seeing, and I believe the Q4 profit report was solid. According to the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/story/investing/general-electric-earnings-rise-52-on-equipment-orders/19809792/">Associated Press</a>, continuing operations captured 36 cents per share, four pennies above the projection. Probably of more significant note in some respects is the top-line performance: the AP stated that net sales increased on a year-over-year basis, a feat that hasn't been observed for quite a while.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/21/ges-electric-rise-after-q4-report-take-profits-or-not/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GE's Electric Rise After Q4 Report: Take Profits or Not?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/21/ges-electric-rise-after-q4-report-take-profits-or-not/">GE's Electric Rise After Q4 Report: Take Profits or Not?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 21 Jan 2011 17:00:00 EST. At the time of this writing, shares were higher by 2.1% to $49.82. That's not too far away from the 52-week high of $52.10, and it is well above the 52-week low of $35.95. Here's the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/hershey-company-the/hsy/nys/tech-chart">one-year chart</a>. As can be seen, the action has been sideways for a while. </p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/13/hershey-trading-higher-after-upgrade/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hershey Trading Higher After Upgrade</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/13/hershey-trading-higher-after-upgrade/">Hershey Trading Higher After Upgrade</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 13 Jan 2011 15:30:00 EST. That meant that the stock was basically flat, down a mere penny to be exact. </p>
<p>Boring. I actually used that word to describe this stock <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/06/kraft-earnings/">back in August</a>. What else do you call a stock that has traded in such a narrow 52-week range? It could very well be my favorite stock. Great brand, excellent dividend history, and so forth . . . you know the drill on Coke. Even so, I enjoy trying to figure out its technical future. For those who have been following the stock's price action this week, I'm sure you're wondering the same thing: Is the equity a sell at this point?<br />
<br />
Full disclosure:<span style="text-decoration: underline"> </span><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/28/coca-cola-not-far-from-52-week-high/">Back in September</a>, I tried to predict the short-term future of the beverage giant, and I got it wrong. Could it be possible? Was it really true? Did Disney (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/the-walt-disney-company/dis/nys">DIS</a>) actually increase its annual dividend by over 14%? <br />
<br />
I haven't been a happy camper as far as the friendliness of this company goes in terms of its <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/01/12/thanks-for-nothing-disney/">dividend payment</a>. But, I have to admit, I was a little more upbeat when I <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/the-walt-disney-company-board-increases-annual-cash-dividend-to-0-40-per-share/rfid392100782/?channel=pf">saw the news</a>. Investors in the Mouse (like myself) will receive 40 cents per share next month, five pennies higher than last year's payout; the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/dividend%20yield">dividend yield</a> is now roughly 1%. Is this enough of a reason to buy the stock?<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/03/disneys-dividend-increase-time-to-buy/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Disney's Dividend Increase: Time to Buy?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/03/disneys-dividend-increase-time-to-buy/">Disney's Dividend Increase: Time to Buy?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 03 Dec 2010 15:10:00 EST. Smucker Company (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/the-j-m-smucker-company/sjm/nys">SJM</a>) was down almost 1.4% to $62.15 at the close of the day. Volume was quite heavy. The market voted on the food entity's latest earnings report. Should investors listen to this opinion and immediately put in sell orders?</p>
<p>According to <a href="http://www.theflyonthewall.com/permalinks/entry.php/SJMid1333966/SJM-JM-Smucker-reports-Q-adjusted-EPS--vs-consensus-">Theflyonthewall</a>, the business, whose colleagues include ConAgra Foods, Inc. That was six solid pennies ahead of the overall projection. Not only was that beat cool to see, but income guidance for fiscal year 2011 <a href="http://www.theflyonthewall.com/permalinks/entry.php/SJMid1333975/SJM-JM-Smucker-raises-FY-diluted-EPS-view-to--vs-consensus-">saw an improvement</a>.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/18/smucker-was-down-today-should-investors-worry/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Smucker Falls: Should Investors Worry?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/18/smucker-was-down-today-should-investors-worry/">Smucker Falls: Should Investors Worry?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 18 Nov 2010 18:00:00 EST. At the time of this writing, shares were off by 2% to $31.74. Volume wasn't overpoweringly strong, but it was above average, and by the time this is published, it could very well become more significant than it appears to me now. <br />
<br />
The yearly range has been a tight one: the 52-week low for the shares is $26.43 while the 52-week high is $34.07. The twelve-month <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/time-warner-inc/twx/nys/tech-chart">chart</a> isn't that attractive, unfortunately. But shareholders may be more impressed by the Q3 numbers.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/03/time-warner-down-on-q3-news/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Time Warner Down on Q3 News</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/03/time-warner-down-on-q3-news/">Time Warner Down on Q3 News</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 03 Nov 2010 15:30:00 EST. Mini-mill steel company Nucor Corp. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/nucor-corporation/nue/nys">NUE</a>) is certainly one of them.</p>
<p>I understand that the construction industry is in the dumps and the auto industry has barely come back to life. There is no question that Nucor has fallen on tough times. However, that is what creates the investment opportunity. If you want to make a lot of money, you must find high-quality companies during their business lulls and not be afraid to put your money to work.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/03/chasing-value-buy-nucor-quality-on-sale/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Chasing Value: Buy Nucor Quality on Sale</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/03/chasing-value-buy-nucor-quality-on-sale/">Chasing Value: Buy Nucor Quality on Sale</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 03 Nov 2010 12:00:00 EST.
