If we look back to the days of the search engine revolution, Google (GOOG) built not only the most powerful search engine, but a business model based on that search engine that has made the company No. 1 in that category.

The company is on the move again -- and Google's Android is leading the way. Google sees the next leg of the Internet revolution in the smart phone, tablet and e-reader market -- and there's already a fierce battle raging. Google's Android is making inroads into the iPhone turf. How deep is the penetration? Singapore research firm Canalys said, "Google shipped twice as many devices as Apple's iPhone. in the fourth quarter," capturing 33% of shipments, up from 8.7% a year ago.

Good news for those of you who haven't yet hopped on the e-reader bandwagon; now you can climb aboard for cheaper. A pricing battle between Barnes & Noble (BKS) - which makes the Nook -- and Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN) -- parent of the Kindle -- leaves consumers the winners, as the devices are now priced south of $200.

The WiFi-only Nook is now available for just $149 (the 3G version is priced at $199) and the 3G-enabled Kindle has been marked down to $189 from $259. That's a 27% savings. It's also conveniently $10 less than the comparable Nook.

Amazon.com AMZN KindleWhen Apple, Inc. (AAPL) introduced the iPad tablet computing device earlier this month, many saw it as immediately being the e-reader device to beat. After all, there were 60,000 e-books in Apple's iBooks store, right? Lest we forget that e-tailer extraordinaire Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN) released its Kindle e-reader device in 2007 and has over 400,000 books available in the Kindle store for purchase and download. But, with the Apple brand behind it, everyone seems to have forgotten about the Kindle.

SNE logoSony (SNE - option chain) shares are rising today after the company announced it has cut the price of its Pocket Reader, its cheapest e-book device, by $30 to $169 through April 4, making it by far the least expensive e-reader on the market. If you think that the stock won't fall by too much in the coming months, then now could be a good time to look at a bullish hedged trade on SNE.

SNE opened this morning at $40.11. So far today the stock has hit a low of $39.98 and a high of $40.22. As of 11:55, SNE is trading at $40.00 up 1.16 (3.0%). The chart for SNE looks bearish and S&P gives SNE a negative 2 STARS (out of 5) sell ranking.

It wouldn't reveal the number, but Amazon (AMZN) did announce that it realized record sales for its Kindle e-reader this month. And, there's still the rest of the month to go, including the run-up to Christmas. Just as the battle for e-reader market share began to flare up, it already seems to be over.

This year, Sony (SNE) released a new e-reader, and Barnes & Noble (BKS) entered the market with its Nook device. Both posted early successes, which quickly became problems. The two companies sold out of inventory and won't be able to ship new orders until the new year.

Best Buy, Inc. (NYSE: BBY) wants to make the U.S. consumer believe that the e-reader is the "must-have" gadget of this holiday season. To that end, the nation's largest consumer electronics retailer has launched a special website (not active yet, apparently) where it will make the e-reader category and associated gadgets headliners of this holiday season's gift giving.

It's more than just Best Buy believing this. Analyst firms like iSuppli are behind the agenda as well. Best Buy's holiday gadget selection will feature more than 120 products priced between $25 and $75, with brands like Sony, Leapfrog and Sharper Image.

Sony E-ReaderWe've all heard of Amazon.com's (NASDAQ: AMZN) Kindle -- perhaps you've even seen it in the flesh. It's portable, well-lit, and comes equipped with wireless technology so a user can download a new novel on the fly.

The competing device, Sony Corp.'s (NYSE: SNE) e-reader ... well, it's portable and well-lit. But if you run out of reading material and you're away from home, too bad. Until now.

Rumors continue to swirl that Sony is not far off from unveiling a wireless version of its Reader. The company's e-reader group has extended an invitation to reporters for a meeting on August 25. Could a wireless announcement be in the offing?

A report today in The Wall Street Journal (subscription required) reveals that Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE) is set to launch two low-priced e-readers, which could prove to be stiff competition for the wildly popular Kindle devices sold by Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN). Sony's latest entries in the e-reader market, known as the PRS-300 and PRS-600, will be priced at $199 and $299, respectively. By contrast, the cheapest Kindle will run you $299.

Sony's budget-friendlier devices are slated to hit store shelves later this month, with the Journal citing Best Buy (NYSE: BBY) and Wal-Mart Stores (NYSE: WMT) as two retailers planning to offer the e-readers. Meanwhile, the low pricing isn't limited to the gadgets themselves; Sony will also drop the cost of best-selling titles from $11.99 to $9.99, matching the deal offered by Amazon.
