Caterpillar shares dig lower after its earnings report

Dow component Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT) appears to be in for a rough day after reporting a first-quarter loss of 19 cents per share. This was the first quarterly loss for the earth mover since 1992. Moreover, a year ago, CAT earned $1.45 per share in the first quarter.

Excluding charges stemming from CAT's workforce reduction, the quarterly earnings would have totaled 39 cents per share -- far better than expectations. Quarterly sales dropped 22% to $9.22 billion, again topping the consensus estimate for $8.33 billion.

Merck profit drops, company cuts revenue

This morning, Merck (NYSE: MRK) unveiled first-quarter earnings, which dropped 57% thanks to a drop in both drug sales and income from its cholesterol medicine partnerships. Excluding charges, Merck brought in 74 cents per share in quarterly earnings. The results were a full three cents short of the consensus estimate.

Turning to revenue, Merck reported $5.39 billion - an 8% drop from a year ago. The consensus estimate for quarterly revenue was $5.77 billion, so the results were far short of the bar set by the Street.

Mosaic reports lower third-quarter earnings

Weak quarterly sales led to a substantial drop in third-quarter earnings for fertilizer firm Mosaic (NYSE: MOS). After the closing bell yesterday, the phosphate and potash producer reported third-quarter earnings of 13 cents per share, far lower than last year's same-quarter earnings of $1.17 per share.

Not only were the results far worse than a year ago, but they missed the Street's expectations for earnings of 24 cents per share. The current results did include a gain of $47.1 million (seven cents per share) for foreign currency transactions.

LDK Solar reports disappointing 4Q earnings and 1Q forecast

Chinese solar firm LDK Solar (NYSE: LDK) reported earnings Wednesday, revealing that a massive writedown caused weaker-than-expected earnings. MBIA reports a Q4 loss thanks to mortgage problems

After the closing bell sounded yesterday afternoon, MBIA (NYSE: MBI) stepped into the spotlight to report fourth-quarter earnings. The struggling banking firm saw its fourth-quarter loss shrink to $1.2 billion, or $5.30 per share from last year's fourth-quarter loss of $18.55 per share.

This quarter's loss came courtesy of a $1.7-billion and a $532-million loss on insured derivatives. Both of these losses were logged pre-tax. The company's CEO Jay Brown blamed the rough 18-month period on the "worst credit crisis since the Great Depression." Last year was a rough year for MBIA, as the weak housing market lead to many homebuyers and homeowners defaulting on or lagging in their mortgage payments leading to a major problem for MBIA, which insures mortgage bonds. The problem for the banking firm is that the mortgage turmoil is expected to continue.
