Of those responding, 81% believe the recovery has started recovering, and 9% (four of those responding) thinking we are still in a recession. Four others were unsure.
Continue reading Are you ready for a 'slow and painful' recovery?

Are you ready for a 'slow and painful' recovery? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 13 Oct 2009 09:50:00 EST. (TM)
I found an interesting slideshow over on U.S. News & World Report that takes a look at the cars that have been hurt the most by the recession. I was not surprised to see the likes of Chrysler, Dodge, Saturn, and Chevrolet on the list -- these brands have a good deal of problems. However, I was very surprised to see Toyota (TM) included in the list. This is Toyota folks, the car company that all car companies should emulate - right? Wrong. It appears that the car giant didn't expect the Toyota Tundra pickup to drag on sales as much as it has, which has dragged sales down. If there is one thing that American automakers know how to do, it is to build big, gas-sucking, diesel-belching, trucks. So don't tread in our realm, Toyota!
Continue reading Toyota finds itself on the list of cars most hurt by the recession

Toyota finds itself on the list of cars most hurt by the recession originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 16 Jul 2009 14:30:00 EST.
The home of Kleenex and Huggies announced yesterday that it will cut 1,600 jobs, roughly 3% of its total workforce. A majority of the cuts will come from salaried and nonproduction workers; the company does not plan to close any plants. The company believes that these cuts will save roughly $150 million a year, or 25 cents per share. These results will be reflected the most in the second quarter, when the company will record $110 million of the costs.

Continue reading Kimberly-Clark cuts 3% of its staff

Kimberly-Clark cuts 3% of its staff originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 26 Jun 2009 08:00:00 EST. NPD Group released its video game sales data yesterday afternoon, reflecting sales that fell to $448.9 million during May. These monthly results are 17% lower than the same period last year. The drop in software sales was somewhat expected, as the Street called for a drop between 15% and 20%. Hardware sales dropped 30% during May, totaling $302.5 million.

But the comparisons are difficult as major hits were released during spring 2008, including Grand Theft Auto IV, Mario Kart, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. There were no such major hits released this year.
Continue reading Video game sales drop again; recovery still far away

Video game sales drop again; recovery still far away originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 12 Jun 2009 10:30:00 EST. With the great city of Cincinnati finally wrapping up winter and seeing that bright glowing orb known as the sun, I can't help but think about getting out there on the links and destroying some landscaping.

One sure way to tell that golf season is right around the corner is when your local Dick's Sporting Goods (NYSE: DKS) starts touting itself as the golf headquarters. Well, guess what happened over the weekend? That's right, I saw my first golf commercial. My question is, will the start of golf season be enough to help the sports retailer put the recent downturn behind itself and push forward?

There can be no doubt that the recent downturn in the economy has beaten down and battered the retail sector, and DKS is no exception. On a weekly basis, the stock has descended steadily since 2007 -- wilting under pressure from its 10-, 20-, and 50-week moving averages.

Continue reading JockStocks: Is Dick's Sporting Goods about to tee off and drive higher?

JockStocks: Is Dick's Sporting Goods about to tee off and drive higher? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 03 Apr 2009 12:50:00 EST. The closures will take place in July, and the company is blaming the action on the recession.

Costco CEO Jim Sinegal noted, "The current economic slowdown and resulting weakness in the home furnishings business in particular have led us to conclude that the single-format Costco Home concept does not fit into our long-term expansion plans." The stores are located in Kirkland, Washington and Tempe, Arizona.

According to the company, there should be no layoffs stemming from the decision -- and the company will continue to offer home furnishings at their wholesale clubs. Moreover, the company does not believe the closing will impact the company's bottom line.

Continue reading Costco Wholesale closing two home furnishing stores

Costco Wholesale closing two home furnishing stores originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 02 Apr 2009 14:10:00 EST. The firm saw its shares fall slightly more than 13% after reporting a fourth-quarter loss of $5.64 per share. A year ago, ODP raked in a profit of seven cents per share, a stark turnaround thanks to the current economy. These results included charges of $4.54 per share and 37 cents per share, all of which stemmed from costs to close certain facilities, cut jobs and write-down assets.
