There is a decidedly global flavor to KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut restaurants lately. And no, we're not talking about the Chalupa Baja -- this is about a global sales for these franchises and their parent company.
In recent years, operator Yum! Brands (YUM) has been growing at a breakneck pace, now with more than 3,500 locations in China alone and plans to open another 900 restaurants outside the U.S. in 2010. And the next global market that is in its sights is the United Kingdom, with a Taco Bell in Essex set to peddle low-priced burritos by the end of June.

In-N-Out Burger, a privately held West Coast fast-food chain with a rabid and almost cult-like following, has been slow to expand beyond California. But the In-N-Out philosophy has also resulted in unmatched popularity that has current locations swamped. The only thing to do is open more stores -- including a rumored expansion into Dallas, Texas, in what would be a huge reach east for the chain.
The move should have Burger King Holdings (
BKC) very worried – and not just because there will be another competing fast-food joint in town. The fact is that In-N-Out is seeing booming growth due to its business model and corporate philosophy at a time BK is losing momentum day by day.

I'm not a fan of Wendy's/Arby's Group (WEN). It just doesn't seem as safe as stocks like Burger King (BKC), McDonald's (MCD), or Yum! Brands (YUM). Of course, I'm certain I did nothing more than state the obvious.
As a low-priced equity, Wendy's/Arby's Group always possesses the risk of volatility. Today, the shares are off by over 3% in afternoon trading; at the time of this writing, I saw a share price of $4.93. Hey, it's better than the day low of $4.86. The company had reported earnings results for the first quarter Thursday morning. Do the numbers make the company look more or less attractive?

At least initially, investors were impressed by hamburger chain Burger King's (
BKC) beat of Wall Street's third quarter earnings estimate,
30 cents compared to the First Call estimate of
29 cents, with its shares jumping 3.5% to $21.41 on Thursday at mid-day.
Further, investors appeared to cut Burger King some slack, as the winter quarter's severe weather artificially depressed traffic. Chief Executive Officer John Chidsey said sales increased in March and were slightly higher in April, although they were still lower compared to a year ago. Burger King earned 34 cents in the third quarter of fiscal 2009.

Across the U.S., from midtown Manhattan to suburban Des Moines, restaurants are starting -slowly but surely - to see signs of recovery. Market research firm NPD Group, which tracks sales at 47 restaurant chains, indicates that sales at restaurants at least one year old
rose 1% in March on a year-over-year basis. It's a modest victory, but a victory nonetheless, as the industry emerges from 10 months of slowing sales.

Yum! Brands (YUM), owner of KFC and Taco Bell, operates in the same industry as McDonald's (MCD), Burger King (BKC), and Wendy's/Arby's Group (WEN). All of these stocks are either at or near their respective 52-week highs. How does Yum! Brands look after its first-quarter report?
You've got to take notice of this stock. The one-year chart depicts an equity that consolidated for a while, only to finally break out and head to the upside. And here's some more good news for both traders and investors alike: Wednesday, the shares closed the regular session 1.8% higher from where they started. Then, during the after-hours session, following distribution of the earnings release, the bulls, deciding they wanted to remain in charge, gave the company another boost.

Though it's a bit later than fast-food rivals McDonald's (
MCD) and Burger King (
BKC), Arby's is at last rolling out a value menu of its own. The restaurant is adding more lower-priced items to its menu including a small roast beef sandwich, curly fries and a "jamocha" shake -- and operator Wendy's/Arby's Group (
WEN) is backing them with an expensive new advertising campaign.
It's part of a big push by the higher priced fast-food joint to woo back cost-conscious customers who fled the pricier restaurant for cheaper rivals during the recession. Since Arby's ownership group Triarc bought the Wendy's name in 2008, it has seen its Arby's stores stuck in a steady downward spiral -- sped up by the recession.
But will this latest gambit help, or is Arby's a dying chain?

Ronald McDonald debuted in 1963 with TV personality Willard Scott donning the clown costume for the first time in an ad spot for McDonald's (MCD). But if some health advocates have their way, the fiery-haired clown's days are numbered.
The Corporate Accountability International is calling McDonald's mascot a "deep-fried Joe Camel for the 21st Century" and is sponsoring "Retire Ronald" events at several locations around the country. The group claims that Ronald McDonald is a spokesperson for childhood obesity, and they want him cut from the payroll pronto.

Yum! Brands (YUM), a collection of restaurant chains operating in the same space as McDonald's (MCD) and Burger King (BKC), didn't post the most exciting earnings report last month, but it might not matter. Just recently, shareholders received a couple pieces of good news.
First, UBS offered inspiring comments about the company and the stock last week. Shares were upgraded to buy status, rising from neutral. A higher price target of $44 was issued. The catalyst basically centers on things getting better on a fundamental basis for the restaurant brands; also, China's sales appear to have stabilized.

McDonald's (
MCD) announced Monday that global comparable sales
increased 4.8% in February. In a statement, the company said that worldwide results for February "show that we're satisfying the needs of our customers around the world by giving them more choice and variety, unbeatable value and the convenience they're looking for given today's busy lifestyles."
The eatery attributed the increase to "strong consumer demand for core favorites," including Chicken McNuggets (which received a boost from an Olympic promotion), the Breakfast Dollar Menu, and McCafe coffees.

Two all-beef patties, special sauce, and fresh fruit? In an effort to keep up with those consumers looking for quick but healthy options, McDonald's (
MCD) is
planning to offer "Real Fruit Smoothies," coming to a Golden Arches near you this summer. The drinks will come in three sizes and two flavors - strawberry banana and wild berry.
And who better to help McDonald's announce these new products than Olympic athletes (the pinnacle of health and well being)? The smoothies debuted at the chain's three Olympic-village restaurants (where athletes can also carbo-load their favorite items from Micky D's menus).
