Closing Bell: Celebrating the Death of the Bears, Sort of (AEO, BAC, FNSR, POT, ROYL)

Oil inventories failed to markedly turn the tide despite more and more public commentary (and perhaps realization) that Libya and unrest elsewhere that is currently on the table may have gone too far in oil. Still, the fear is what lies ahead tomorrow rather than what is happening today. PIMCO's Bill Gross has exited US Treasury bonds from the PIMCO Total Return Fund as well. The markets fought between being up and down on the two-year anniversary of the start of the end of the bear market.

Here were today's closing bells:

Dow Jones 12,213.09 -1.29 (-0.01%)
S&P 500 1,320.03 -1.79 (-0.14%)
Nasdaq 2,751.72 -14.05 (-0.51%)

Closing Bell: Stocks survive despite weak confidence and record oil

Today was an odd day, and despite the mixed index levels it should be considered a win. Oil rose sharply and was over $127.00 at one point after the Saudi's said that demand didn't justify increasing production in oil; Goldman Sachs put oil's average target for the second half of 2008 above $140/barrel. To top it off, the controversial University of Michigan consumer confidence level came in at the lowest reading since 1980. Even housing saw strange information as the rise in building permits and housing starts came out much higher than expected: so much for house prices stabilizing.

Finisar breaking some hearts

Finisar (NASDAQ:FNSR) trades like water. On a good day, ten million shares in the optical equipment maker change hands. The optics business should be strong. With companies like Verizon (NYSE:VZ) building out big fiber networks, there ought to be plenty of business to go around.

That brings Wall Street to the case at hand. Finisar revenue rose only 16% in its most recently reported quarter to $108 million. The firm can't give out complete financials until its options back-dating probe is behind it.

Finisar made matters worse by guiding for $104 million to $110 million in revenue in the current quarter. Reuters says investors are looking for $116 million.

Shareholders had to be hoping for better. Over the last year, Finisar shares are down about 35%. Other companies in the industry like JDS Uniphase (NASDAQ:JDSU) are guiding for better days ahead.

And, perhaps that is the problem. Companies like JDSU are beating Finisar in the horse race to supply capacity to provide infrastructure for rising internet traffic.

The internet traffic boom will not last forever. Video streaming is already in the market with huge bandwidth hogs like Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) YouTube.

For Finisar, if not now, when?

Shares should be down today, or it is a victory of hope over reason.
