Closing Bell: Wishy-Washy... Earnings season prelude? (AMGN, FDO, FSLR, GE, YRCW)

A late day rally based on imbalance orders and on the Treasury's PPIP winners made a wishy-washy day even that more confusing. The market started out with a slight upside bid, but it never could find its footing. This is probably due to continued earnings jitters ahead of earnings season.

Continued oil inventory data and continued worries about regulating the commodities markets were based around how much speculators can really control.

Here were the unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow 8,184.68 +21.08 (0.26%)
S&P 500 880.29 -0.74 (-0.08%)
Nasdaq 1,749.09 +2.92 (0.17%)

Closing Bell: The wishy-washy return to Q3 (AA, DDUP, EMC, DNDN, CVX, FSLR, GS)

The ISM Non-Manufacturing, or services reading, came in under the positive levels again, but these were very close to positive if you removed that employment portion of the number. Today was a day where commodities were weak and overseas markets were weak more than anything. We still think investors are trying to trim down positions and temper expectations for earnings season starting this week and next.

Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow 8,324.87 +44.13 (0.53%)
S&P 500 898.70 +2.28 (0.25%)
Nasdaq 1,787.40 -9.12 (-0.51%)

Closing Bell: When the unemployed govern the markets (AIG, DSCO, FSLR, TIVO)

Some days you know you have a winner, and some days you know you have a loser. Just like the loss of 473,000 jobs to 9.5% unemployment in June, today started as a losing day and ended up as a losing day. It feels as though the "lagging indicator" aspect of employment may lead us into a new leg-down in the recession. At least there was some bit of good news: bond yields came down.

Here were today's closing bell levels:

Dow 8,306.21 -197.85 (-2.33%)
S&P 500 898.88 -24.45 (-2.65%)
Nasdaq 1,798.12 -47.60 (-2.58%)

Closing Bell: Bernanke credibility helps run the bulls (BA, BSX, FSLR, NKE, SIRI, YHOO, INSM)

Today was not just a strange day in the market. It was nearly baffling. At least it was a strange day if you were looking for the pullbacks to continue. The market was looking lower as the double-dip jobless numbers got worse than expected again, despite final Q1 GDP revisions being less-bad. The quarter-end coming up and the Russell re-balance may have some impact here.

Most of the gains continued throughout the morning into the early afternoon as investors got more confident over Ben Bernanke's testimony strength. Here were the unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow 8,475.57 +175.71 (2.12%)
S&P 500 920.28 +19.34 (2.15%)
Nasdaq 1,829.43 +37.09 (2.07%)

Evolution of a trade in First Solar

This post was written by Minyanville contributor Smita Sadana.

A trade doesn't simply have an initiation and finale – the most important part of a trade is its evolution and constant re-assessment if the original thesis that the trade was initiated with, still holds true.

On that note, let's look at First Solar (NASDAQ:FSLR). I started a short position in it on 6/1 when instead of participating in the market advance, it lagged (due to a LA Times story that FSLR's acquisition of "strategic land rights" is under scrutiny). Recall, it came on the heels of a cautious mention in Barron's on May 26th. So, both times, FSLR reacted negatively to negative news and volume picked up on both those instances.

Today, Pacific Crest Securities reiterated its buy rating on FSLR and called the recent weakness a "buying opportunity."

First Solar: Profitable sun worship

Generally, my bias is toward large-cap companies with a demonstrated business model. In a nutshell, "experimental" business models need not apply. However, every once in a while I make an exception, and First Solar (NASDAQ: FSLR) is one. Here's why:

In addition to growth potential for its proprietary thin film semiconductor solar module technology, First Solar has a building macroeconomic tailwind in the bottoming U.S./global recession and dawning recovery. The First Call FY2009/FY2010 EPS estimates for FSLR are $7.18 to $8.72.

Closing Bell: When confidence trumps housing (FSLR, CSIQ, FRE, GE, GM, MSFT)

All in all, this was actually a light day on the news flow for major stocks. Today's dismal Case-Shiller data for a record drop in housing prices was trumped completely by a surge in consumer confidence this morning. The notion that North Korea did a nuclear bomb test was only important for discussions during the very early morning, but slowly faded thereafter.

Here are today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow 8,473.49 +196.17 (2.37%)
S&P 500 910.31 +23.31 (2.63%)
Nasdaq 1,750.43 +58.42 (3.45%)

First Solar gaps lower on downgrade, bearish Barron's article

The shares of First Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR) have started the week on a rocky note. Not only did Friedman, Billings, Ramsey & Co. downgrade the stock from Market Perform to Underperform, the alternative energy issue was also the topic of a skeptical Barron's article over the weekend.

In a note to clients, brokerage firm Friedman cited weak polysilicon prices and the stock's overrich valuation for its downgrade. FSLR closed last Friday at $191.72 per share, compared to Friedman's price target of $110.

Meanwhile, the cautious Barron's write up [subscription required] observes that the Intersolar trade show begins Wednesday in Munich, and pits FSLR against many lower-priced rivals. "One leading customer says it will ditch First Solar's 'thin-film' panels if crystalline silicon alternatives keep getting cheaper.

That seems likely. Silicon prices are expected to drop another 30% by year end. First Solar profits -- and its shares -- could get cut in half," commented the financial paper.

Closing Bell: Great Day Thwarted, Disaster Thwarted (BBI, GENZ, TM, BAC, FSLR)

Day 497: The seige continues and we have been out of supplies for weeks. That is how today felt. The morning strength was deemed as a mere opportunity to sell as traders just do not trust gap-ups any more. Ben Bernanke tried to calm the markets, but his comments only helped to add salt to the wounds. This was one of the few days where we actually had some 52-week highs . Here are today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow 6,726.02 -37.27 (-0.55%)

First Solar (FSLR): Still shining?

"The solar sector has been notably weak, including First Solar (NASDAQ: FSLR)," says Stephen Leeb. Despite the setback, the editor of The Complete Investor rates the stock a high risk buy.

"First Solar is one of the few whose earnings outperformed consensus estimates: its fourth-quarter results reported yesterday after the market's close were nearly 25% better than estimates.

"First Solar made $1.61 per share this past quarter; Wall Street was expecting $1.30 per share. Revenues were also ahead of estimates, although the company reduced 2009 revenue estimates by about 10%, citing short-term credit concerns for customers.
