With earnings season in full swing, the FOMC meeting on interest rates, the GDP estimate, and housing numbers due out, the coming week is shaping up to be a busy one. So here's a peek at what's on the economic calendar.

Monday

Quarterly reports from American Express (AXP) and McDonald's (MCD) will highlight Monday. Amgen (AMGN), CSX (CSX), Halliburton (HAL) and Texas Instruments (TXN) are also expected to report strong earnings results.

Starting with five major defense contractors and six major oil companies (see Chasing Value: You Must Own Defense and Oil for Safety), I began a search to find one stock in each sector that might be suitable for inclusion in my list of 2011 stock picks posted last week Chasing Value: 2011 Stock Picks -- The Journey Begin.

Today we continue our analysis by examining return on equity (ROE), return on invested capital (ROIC), and price-to-earnings-to-growth (PEG). Each stock is ranked by sector and metric from best to worst. Sometimes there are clear winners and others there is little to separate one stock from the next. However, in total, a picture can be drawn that does portray a superior opportunity.

• Credit Suisse upgraded Netflix (NFLX) to neutral from underperform and raised its price target to $140 from $90. The firm's survey work indicates Netflix's streaming offering is compelling and will continue to grow as it acquires additional streaming content.
• Barclays upgraded Ford (F) to overweight from equal weight, citing the company's earnings power, reduced cost base, expectations for a return to prior peak margins and valuation. The firm raised its target to $16 from $15.
• Merriman upgraded OpenTable (OPEN) to buy from neutral based on increased visibility into international expansion from the toptable.com acquisition and upside from its Spotlight product.
• Siemens (SI) was upgraded to conviction buy from buy at Goldman.
• Medicis (MRX) was upgraded to buy from hold at Jefferies.

Northrop Grumman (NOC) may be a U.S. Air Force favorite, but it does not deserve a place in your portfolio right now.

Northrop announced it received an indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity (ID/IQ) award from the Air Force that has a potential value of $919 million collectively over 10 year. Northrop will compete to provide mission planning software systems and tools that enable warfighters to plan missions and transfer required data to aircraft avionics.

Unfortunately for Northrop, this announcement was overshadowed by Goldman Sach's announcement that it has added Northrop to its "conviction sell" list today.

Frankly, even with the announcement of this new contract, I agree with the folks at Goldman. Northrop has been in a persistent downtrend since the end of April and is continuing to form lower highs and lower lows. A temporary support level has established itself at $54, but I don't expect this level to hold up for long.

• Deutsche Bank upgraded Barrick Gold (ABX) to buy from hold and reiterates a buy rating on Newmont Mining (NEM) after upping its 2011 gold forecast to $1,450 per ounce and 2012 forecast to $1,600 per ounce. The firm upped its target for Barrick shares to $53 from $45, for Newmont shares to $74 from $72, and on hold-rated Goldcorp (GG) and Kinross Gold (KGC) to $40 and $20, respectively.
• Citigroup upgraded General Dynamics (GD) to hold from sell following the recent pullback in shares. The firm keeps a $67 price target for the stock.
• UBS upgraded Public Service (PEG) to buy from neutral and has a $34 price target on the stock. The firm cites the company's solid balance sheet, earnings profile, and valuation for the upgrade.
• News Corp. (NWS) was upgraded to buy from hold at Soleil.
• AK Steel (AKS) was upgraded to neutral from underperform.
• Progress Energy (PGN) was upgraded to buy from neutral at BofA/Merrill.
• PNC Financial (PNC) was upgraded to outperform from market perform at Keefe Bruyette.

Aircraft builders Boeing Co. (BA) and General Dynamics Corp. (GD) posted solid fourth-quarter earnings on Wednesday, but with disappointing guidance for the year.

Chicago-based Boeing said it earned $1.3 billion, or $1.75 per share, compared with a loss of $86 million, or $0.12 cents per share, in the year-ago period. Sales rose 2.9% from a year ago to $17.9 billion as Boeing doubled commercial aircraft deliveries for the period. A survey of analysts by Thomson Reuters predicted a $1.36 profit on $17.6 billion in revenue.

General Dynamics (NYSE: GD) turned in a quarterly profit that beat expectations. The business of battle overshadowed aviation industry contraction, which contributed to the result. Thanks to the strong Q3, General Dynamics has raised its profit forecast for the year.

JPMorgan analyst Joseph Nadol wrote to his clients this morning that "the stock has been strong recently" and "there is no denying that the company posted good results." But, he also observed that the near-term upside is limited, because investors expected a solid Q3, and the company still faces some pressure from a pretty sharp drop in its aerospace backlog.

Stocks are up this year but not everyone is profiting. One reason is that many investors, stung by the market collapse, have been looking for safety by investing in dividend paying stocks. But Richard Moroney, editor of Dow Theory Forecasts, says that investing for yield is a flawed strategy.

Moroney, a chartered financial analyst, points out that while the S&P 1500 Index is up about 16% so far this year, investors in high-yielding stocks (with yields of 4% or more) have a year-to-date return of just 4%. And he says that stocks that do not pay dividends are up an average of 29%.

We spoke with Richard Moroney to find out why this is the case -- and what income investors should do.
