Instead of being dismissed, as many fans and sports analysts were anticipating, Torre was actually given the option of a one-year contract carrying a price tag of $8 million (including incentives). <br /><br />But the former Yankees skipper -- who held the title for 12 years and ranks second in the club's history for number of wins (at 1,173, trailing only Joe McCarthy) -- met Thursday afternoon with Yankee general manager Brian Cashman and owner George Steinbrenner to turn down the offer.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/10/18/joe-torre-rejects-yanks-offer/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joe Torre rejects Yanks' offer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/10/18/joe-torre-rejects-yanks-offer/">Joe Torre rejects Yanks' offer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 18 Oct 2007 20:45:00 EST. So I thought I'd take another look and see how things have worked out. </p>
<p>It's hard to pick just one big winner. In terms of the largest lead over a rival, <strong><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-ivanka-trump-vs-paris-hilton/">Ivanka Trump</a></strong> easily beats Paris Hilton with 89% of the vote. Others holding big leads over their opponents include <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-tiger-woods-vs-david-beckham/"><strong>Tiger Woods</strong></a>, <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/16/money-face-off-warren-buffett-vs-eddie-lampert/"><strong>Warren Buffett</strong></a>, <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-george-lucas-vs-steven-spielberg/"><strong>Steven Spielberg</strong></a>, and <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-rupert-murdoch-vs-sumner-redstone/"><strong>Rupert Murdoch</strong></a>. </p>
<p>In terms of receiving the most votes, the clear leader is the <strong><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-oprah-winfrey-vs-martha-stewart/">Oprah Winfrey vs. Martha Stewart</a></strong> match-up, with just short of 150,000 votes. Other big vote getters were <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-tiger-woods-vs-david-beckham/"><strong>Tiger Woods vs. David Beckham</strong></a>, <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/16/money-face-off-rudy-giuliani-vs-mike-bloomberg/"><strong>Rudy Giuliani vs. Michael Bloomberg</strong></a>, and <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-steve-jobs-vs-bill-gates/"><strong>Bill Gates vs. Steve Jobs</strong></a>. In terms of the liveliest discussions in the comments, the winners are <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-oprah-winfrey-vs-martha-stewart/"><strong>Oprah Winfrey vs. Martha Stewart</strong></a>, <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-maria-bartiromo-versus-erin-burnett/"><strong>Erin Burnett vs. Maria Bartiromo</strong></a>, and <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/16/money-face-off-bono-vs-angelina-jolie/"><strong>Bono vs. Angelina Jolie</strong></a>. Also check out the comments for the <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/16/money-face-off-jrr-tolkien-vs-jk-rowling/"><strong>J.K. Rowling vs. J.R.R Tolkien</strong></a>, <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-tiger-woods-vs-david-beckham/"><strong>Tiger Woods vs. David Beckham</strong></a>, and <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-ivanka-trump-vs-paris-hilton/"><strong>Ivanka Trump vs. Paris Hilton</strong></a> posts. </p>
<p>As for the face-off posts here that got the most attention, the clear winner is <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-maria-bartiromo-versus-erin-burnett/"><strong>Erin Burnett vs. Maria Bartiromo</strong></a>, with more than 13,000 hits. <strong><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-britney-spears-vs-lindsay-lohan/">Lindsay Lohan vs. Britney Spears</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-oprah-winfrey-vs-martha-stewart/">Oprah Winfrey vs. Martha Stewart</a></strong> also attracted lots of readers.</p>
<p>Results for all the face-offs follow below, but keep in mind that the voting is still open. It's not too late to add your vote or let us know what you think.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/10/06/money-face-off-big-winners-oprah-tiger-woods-ivanka-trump-er/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Money Face-Off Big Winners: Oprah, Tiger Woods, Ivanka Trump, Erin Burnett</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/10/06/money-face-off-big-winners-oprah-tiger-woods-ivanka-trump-er/">Money Face-Off Big Winners: Oprah, Tiger Woods, Ivanka Trump, Erin Burnett</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sat, 06 Oct 2007 12:40:00 EST. Many of the face-off polls have had more than 50,000 votes, a couple of them approaching 100,000. </p>
<p>The biggest response came to the <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-oprah-winfrey-vs-martha-stewart/">Oprah Winfrey vs. Martha Stewart</a> match-up. So far, about 75 percent of respondents feel that Oprah is the more successful media magnate. Not that much surprise there, as Oprah's fans are legion. Interestingly, though, of the twenty-some comments the post has received, most of them are pro-Martha.</p>
<p>Another clear leader is <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-steve-jobs-vs-bill-gates/">Bill Gates over rival Steve Jobs</a>. About three quarters of poll votes have gone his way, despite all the buzz recently about <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/apple-inc/aapl/nas">Apple Inc.</a> (NASDAQ: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/apple-inc/aapl/nas">AAPL</a>) and the popularity of its products. Maybe readers are just happy that Gates is stepping down. Let us know what you think.</p>
<p>Alan Greenspan seems to be everywhere these days, promoting his new book, including Comedy Central's <em>The Daily Show</em> and NPR's <em>Fresh Air</em>. In our match-up of the current and former Fed chairs, <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/15/money-face-off-alan-greenspan-vs-ben-bernanke/">Ben Bernanke vs. Alan Greenspan</a>, more than 70 percent of respondents have voted for Greenspan. Comments to the post are mixed, but seem to me to focus on Greenspan, whether pro or con.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/22/money-face-off-recap-oprah-and-tiger-and-buffett-oh-my/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Money Face-Off recap: Oprah and Tiger and Buffett, oh my!</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/22/money-face-off-recap-oprah-and-tiger-and-buffett-oh-my/">Money Face-Off recap: Oprah and Tiger and Buffett, oh my!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sat, 22 Sep 2007 15:40:00 EST. If these celebrities were stocks, which would be the shrewd buy?</em></p>
<p>The shrewd, cantankerous veteran vs. the trash-talking but talented kid -- who would you put your money on?</p>
<p>The veteran would be <a href="http://www.answers.com/topic/george-steinbrenner">George Steinbrenner</a>, head of the New York Yankees since 1973. Steinbrenner made his nut in the family shipbuilding business when he bought out the American Ship Building Co. He was always an avid sports fan, even serving as a football coach at Northwestern and Purdue before returning to the business world. His first acquisition, however, the Cleveland Pipers of the American Basketball Association, left him broke. The <em>New York Times</em> <a href="http://dealbook.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/08/02/yes-said-to-be-for-sale-are-yanks-on-deck/">Dealbook speculates</a> that with YES, the Yankee's television network currently up for sale, that the team itself might not be too far behind. Much of the speculation is based on a <a href="http://money.cnn.com/2007/08/01/news/companies/yes_sale.fortune/index.htm?postversion=2007080206"><em>recent article in Fortune</em></a> magazine. There are rumors that owner/lunatic George Steinbrenner's health is deteriorating, and he has been less openly crazy than in the past. (Full disclosure: I am a die-hard Red Sox fan, and one of the highlights of my life was watching Jason Varitek stuff his mitt in A-Rod's face.) </p>
<p>According to <em>Fortune</em>:</p>
<p><em>The topic of a sale "comes up all the time" in conversations with the other partners, says Yanks minority owner Edward Rosenthal, a retired steel executive. Adds another Yankees limited partner: "If I were handicapping it, I think we're looking at a sale of the team within three or four years."</em></p>
<p>The Yankees are estimated to be worth around $1.5 billion, but with hedge fund/private equity managers lining up to cash out their stakes with IPOs, it seems like it could go for even more -- perhaps a lot more.</p>
<p>Assuming The Boss's health is OK, that still raises the question: How much longer before he gets sick of losing?</p>
<p> </p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/08/04/are-the-new-york-yankees-for-sale/">Are the New York Yankees for sale?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sat, 04 Aug 2007 09:40:00 EST. <p>Like great investors, great baseball executives know where to find value. On the face of it, spending lots of money on a 44-year-old pitcher seems like a poor investment. But this isn't just any player. Clemens has already won 348 games, along with seven Cy Young Awards, making him one of the best to ever play the game.</p>
<p>The Yankees are going to pay him an astounding $4.5 million <em>per month</em> for four months work. That works out to about $9,000 per pitch regardless whether they are balls or strikes. Sure is nice work if you can get it, but is Yankee owner George Steinbrenner going to get his money's worth from Clemens? They have to reach the postseason, period. </p>
<p>The Bronx Bombers faced a double-digit deficit to the Red Sox last weekend, before rebounding slightly. They've been forced to start a record seven rookies in the team's first 42 games, so adding Clemens surely will be a welcome injection for the decimated starting staff. </p>
