Today was an odd trading day considering that the FOMC meeting seemed to command far less media time than in the past, but that was because no real changes in its stance were expected. And the FOMC made the pledge to keep rates low for extended periods.
There was also a mixed picture on ADP and Challenger jobs data ahead of tomorrow's weekly jobless claims and ahead of Friday's key unemployment data. Gold continued its run along with higher oil on weekly inventory data.
Here were the unofficial closing bell levels:
Dow 9,862.44 +90.53 (0.93%)
S&P 500 1,046.50 +1.09 (0.10%)
Nasdaq 2,055.52 -1.80 (-0.09%)

Maybe it was the dollar rising earlier, maybe it was poor housing data from a
drop in new home sales. Maybe they wanted more than a
marginally positive durable goods reading. Maybe it was that
oil inventory is back up. And then there is the notion that stocks have just gotten too far ahead of themselves and there were reports of a large strategist cutting GDP targets. But investors sold religiously today ahead of tomorrow's GDP figure.
Here were today's closing bell levels:
Dow 9,762.69 -119.48 (-1.21%)
S&P 500 1,042.63 -20.78 (-1.95%)
Nasdaq 2,059.61 -56.48 (-2.67%)

"Though I've long believed Garmin (NASDAQ: GRMN) was easily the best managed firm in the GPS space, it continues to feel the sting from competitive forces," says Paul McWilliams.
Here, the technology stock specialist and editor of Next Inning reviews the company and the prospects for its new entry in the cell phone market -- the nuvifone.
"As you would expect, the nuvifone is very GPS-centric with all sorts of Geo-tagging features for email, SMS and pictures. It also includes an Opera browser and is fully capable of viewing Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents and working with both personal and enterprise email systems.
"While I've not seen one in person yet, what I've heard from those who have and from what I've seen on the GRMN web site, I think the product has potential.
"The key, however, will be how the nuvifone is marketed and how well GRMN does in building an applications store, a factor that I think will be a huge differentiation driver as we move forward in the Smartphone sector.
