<br />
Headed into the fiscal fourth quarter report, analysts had been expecting to see <a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/category/earnings/">earnings</a> of 15 cents per share. Actual <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/category/earnings/" class="inlinked">earnings</a> easily topped estimates at 25 cents per share. During the same period last year, the company had earnings of 17 cents per share.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/31/winn-dixie-trading-lower-despite-topping-analyst-estimates/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Winn-Dixie Trading Lower Despite Topping Analyst Estimates</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/31/winn-dixie-trading-lower-despite-topping-analyst-estimates/">Winn-Dixie Trading Lower Despite Topping Analyst Estimates</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 31 Aug 2010 09:00:00 EST. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/the-kroger-co/kr/nys">KR</a>). Kroger will be <a href="http://www.forbes.com/feeds/ap/2010/03/08/business-specialized-consumer-services-us-kroger-earnings-preview_7414782.html?boxes=financechannelAP">reporting its fourth quarter</a> numbers before the market opens.<br />
<br />
Going into tomorrow's earnings report, analysts expect Kroger to earn <a href="http://earnings.com/company.asp?client=cb&amp;ticker=kr">$0.34 per share</a>. Should the company match analyst estimates it would mark a 34% drop from the 53 cents it earned during the same period last year.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/08/kroger-fourth-quarter-earnings-preview/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Kroger Fourth Quarter Earnings Preview</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/08/kroger-fourth-quarter-earnings-preview/">Kroger Fourth Quarter Earnings Preview</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 08 Mar 2010 18:00:00 EST. <br />
As we noted in our <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/14/the-week-in-preview-a-first-look-at-retail-walmart-jcpenney-a/">earnings preview for Whole Foods</a>, analysts had forecast that the company would be announcing that it earned 26 cents per share during the quarter. Actual results were much stronger, at a reported 32 cents per share.<br />

During the same period last year the company had earnings of 20 cents per share.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/17/whole-foods-q1-results-top-estimates/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Whole Foods Q1 Results Top Estimates</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/17/whole-foods-q1-results-top-estimates/">Whole Foods Q1 Results Top Estimates</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 17 Feb 2010 08:30:00 EST. Acting boldly in this market, amid the U.S. recession and an unresolved toxic asset situation, and you're looking at a 30-40% haircut up ahead. (Or worse.) <br /><br />Still, investors capable of tolerating risk would be wise to position themselves in a few defensive plays with decent upside potential. But let's make one thing clear: defensives with an upside are not, strictly speaking, conventional defensive plays. They carry more risk but, one could argue, that risk is reasonable, given the potential for the capital appreciation pop. With the above as a backdrop, grocery chain <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/safeway-inc/swy/nys">Safeway</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/safeway-inc/swy/nys">SWY</a>) is worth a review.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/02/20/safeway-a-frugality-play-for-the-new-era/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Safeway: A frugality play, for the new era</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/02/20/safeway-a-frugality-play-for-the-new-era/">Safeway: A frugality play, for the new era</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 20 Feb 2009 10:15:00 EST. Further, there are few defensive plays better than a grocery store chain, and in this category Kroger is worth a review.<br /><br /><a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/kroger-co-the/kr/nys?tabs=quotesandnews">The Kroger Co.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/kroger-co-the/kr/nys?tabs=quotesandnews">KR</a>) is the nation's largest grocery chain, boasting more than 2,400 stores, with the typical format being food/drug store combination stores.<br /><br />Analysts see modest sales growth in 2008 of 4-7% but margins should widen, due to Kroger's ability to pass on product cost increases, and a more-modest advertising budget.<br /><br />In general, analysts also sense that Kroger is in-tune with competitive pressures in the grocery chain segment - - improving customer service levels and the overall shopping experience. Further, look for KR's private label items to play a larger role in revenue, particularly as some consumers switch down to generic brands in 2008 to reduce their food costs. <a href="http://stocks.us.reuters.com/stocks/estimates.asp?symbol=kr">The Reuters FY 2008/FY 2009 EPS consensus estimates</a> for KR are $1.69 to $1.89.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/01/02/kroger-is-the-defensive-play-thats-right-down-the-street/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Kroger is the defensive play that's right down the street</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/01/02/kroger-is-the-defensive-play-thats-right-down-the-street/">Kroger is the defensive play that's right down the street</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 02 Jan 2008 17:58:00 EST.
