MAJOR PAPERS:
- CtW Investment Group sent a letter to Countrywide Financial Corporation's (NYSE: CFC) Board of Directors "urging" for the resignation of CEO Angel Mozilo, reported the Wall Street Journal (subscription required).
- According to antitrust attorneys, a possible merger with a Big Pharma company may result in Biogen Idec (NASDAQ: BIIB) having to divest some overlapping assets or licensing deals in order for the deal to get approval from the Federal Trade Commission, reported the Financial Times "MergerMarket" blog.
- The Financial Times reported that Gilat Satellite Networks (NASDAQ: GILT) is working with UBS to evaluate "several strategic and private equity buyers" in buying Gilat, which could get over $500M in a sale, according to people familiar with the matter. Bids for the company are due by the end of the week, said the sources.

- The New York Times reported that Chinese investment bank Citic Securities is planning to invest $1B in Bear Stearns Companies (NYSE: BSC), according to sources.
- The New York Times reported that the head of the Federal Trade Commission, or FTC, has rejected numerous requests to open an investigation into Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) for anticompetitive conduct, according to inside sources.
- The Guardian reported that world oil production peaked last year, and production will fall by half as soon as 2030, according to a report by Germany-based organization Energy Watch Group.

- A week after Boone Pickens disclosed a 9.9% stake in InterOil Corporation (NYSE: IOC), the stock gushed from $28 on Aug. 8 to $40.75 on Aug. 13, the day the oil-and-gas explorer disclosed it found evidence of oil in its Elk-2 well in Papua New Guinea.
- Bioenvision Inc (NASDAQ: BIVN), the small biotech that Genzyme Corporation (NASDAQ: GENZ) agreed to acquire in May at $5.60 a share, may not close on the deal unless Genzyme raises its offer.

- Alain Dassas has been named CFO of Nissan Motor Company (NASDAQ: NSANY), filing a position that has remained open for four years, reported the Wall Street Journal. Dassas runs the Formula One race car team at Renault, which has a 44% stake in Nissan.
OTHER PAPERS:
- Goldman Sachs Group (NYSE: GS), Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS), Citigroup Inc (NYSE: C), Lehman Brothers Holdings (NYSE: LEH) and JP Morgan Chase and Company (NYSE: JPM), The banks involved in the underwriting of the TXU Corporation (NYSE: TXU) buyout by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and TPG, have offered to pay the $1B breakup free to convince the private equity buyers to back out, according to the U.K. Times.
- GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE: GSK) is currently looking for someone to succeed CEO Jean-Pierre Garnier, who will retire next May, and investors are thought to want a CEO that will 'radically overhaul' the company and possible break it up, reported the Guardian.
- The Seattle Times reported that Boeing Company (NYSE: BA) is expected to announce that the first flight of its 787 Dreamliner jet will be delayed at least until late October, according to an inside source.

- Herb Greenberg noted in his MarketWatch blog yesterday that International Rectifier Corporation (NYSE: IRF) disclosed on Friday after the market close how it was committing fraud by having a subsidiary hide products already booked as revenue in "off-books warehouses."

- Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS) is about to purchase 13 hotels from All Nippon Airways for about $1.2B, doubling the number of hotels the investment bank owns there, reported the Wall Street Journal.
- The Financial Times reported that Apple Inc (NASDAQ: AAPL) announced it would delay shipping its new Leopard operating system until October, due to the summer launch of its iPhone.
