Analyst initiations 8-07-07: BX, DELL, HPQ and YHOO

MOST NOTEWORTHY: Ingram Micro (IM), SYNNEX Corp (SNX), Yahoo! (YHOO), Macquarie Infrastructure (MIC) and Polypore International (PPO) were today's noteworthy initiations:
  • Banc of America assumed coverage of Ingram Micro (NYSE: IM) with a Buy rating and $23 target, as the firm is positive on the company's balanced growth and margin expansion.
  • Banc of America also initiated shares of SYNNEX Corp (NYSE: SNX) with a Buy rating and $24 target, as they believe cost synergies and mix in 2007 will drive 2008 leverage and share appreciation.
  • ThinkEquity transferred coverage of Yahoo! (NASDAQ: YHOO) with an Accumulate rating and cut its target to $27. ThinkEquity believes Yahoo!'s challenges, which include employee turnover risk, slower user growth, competitive pressures and limited upside in search, are unlikely to be fixed near-term by the new team of management.
  • Macquarie Infrastructure (NYSE: MIC) was initiated with a Buy rating and $51 target at Citigroup, as the firm believes management fee concerns are priced into shares and that the recent acquisition of Mercury Air and San Jose Jet Center will drive a 6% increase in dividend by the end of 2007.
OTHER INITIATIONS:
  • Lehman Brothers initiated shares of Blackstone Group (NYSE: BX) with an Overweight rating and $32 target.

Analyst upgrades 5-09-07: AMZN, COMS, HPQ, IBM and JNY

MOST NOTEWORTHY: IBM Corp (IBM), Amazon.com, Inc (AMZN), Hewlett-Packard Co (HPQ), Universal Technical Institute (UTI) and 3Com Corp (COMS) were some of today's noteworthy upgrades:
  • Goldman upgraded IBM Corp (NYSE: IBM) to Buy from Neutral to reflect the company's valuation creation moves, as the firm believes IBM's accelerated buyback program and pension expense reduction will be accretive to earnings.
  • Despite ThinkEquity's belief that the company was faltering, Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN) customers have grown in size and accelerated their purchases. The upgrade to Accumulate from Source of Funds was based on Amazon.com's increase of market share in core categories.
  • AG Edwards upgraded Hewlett Packard (NYSE: HPQ) to Buy from Hold based on higher estimates, continued share gains and the evidence that HPQ has continued its cost cutting abilities.
  • 3Com (NASDAQ: COMS) was upgraded to Hold from Sell at Matrix USA based on the company's improving balance sheet ..
OTHER UPGRADES:
  • Prudential upgraded Alcan Inc (NYSE: AL) to Neutral from Underweight.

Analyst upgrades 4-04-07: Hewlett-Packard & Coldwater Creek upgraded today

MOST NOTEWORTHY: Weyerhaeuser Co (WY), Jackson Hewitt Tax Service Inc (JTX), Hewlett-Packard Co (HPQ) and Coldwater Creek Inc (CWTR) were some of today's more noteworthy upgrades:
  • UBS upgraded shares of Weyerhaeuser Co (NYSE: WY) to Neutral from Reduce citing the stock's recent weakness.
  • Morgan Stanley upgraded shares of Jackson Hewitt Tax Service (NYSE: JTX) to Equal Weight from Underweight on valuation as the firm believes yesterday's sell-off was overdone.
  • Coldwater Creek (NASDAQ: CWTR) was upgraded to Buy from Neutral at Bank of America based on the company's favorable risk/reward.
OTHER UPGRADES:
  • BB&T upgraded shares of Pacer International, Inc (NASDAQ: PACR) to Buy from Hold citing the company's operational changes and new $100M shares' repurchase.
  • SkyWest, Inc (NASDAQ: SKYW) was upgraded to Neutral from Underweight at Prudential.
  • Bear Stearns upgraded shares of Sonic Corp (NASDAQ: SONC) to Outperform from Peer Perform on expectations of an acceleration in partner drive-in same store sales and system wide unit expansion.
  • Citigroup upgraded Corinthian Colleges, Inc (NASDAQ: COCO) to Buy from Hold after a company visit as the firm believes expectations are finally low enough and recent initiatives are taking hold. Further, Citigroup believes takeover speculation will limit downside as their analysis suggests an LBO could work.

Newspaper wrap-up 1-16-07: Fidel Castro in "very grave" condition

MAJOR PAPERS:
  • Barron's Magazine (subscription required) highlighted a number of possible M&A targets, along with a few stocks it believes to be undervalued:
    • M&A is expected to continue in Europe: possible large cap targets include Barclays (NYSE: BCS), Deutsche Telekom (NYSE: DT), Deutsche Bank (NYSE: DB), ABN Amro (NYSE: ABN), Volkswagen (OTC: VLKAY), Koninklljke (NYSE: KPN) and Swisscom (NYSE: SCM); possible small-mid cap targets include Hellenic Telecom (NYSE: OTE).
    • There may still be upside in shares of Xerox (NYSE: XRX), says James Benson, a partner and securities analyst at Harris Associates.
    • Shares of YRC Worldwide (NASDAQ: YRCW) may be undervalued by as much as 50%, says Barron's "Bottom Line," which writes that shares could climb above $60.
  • The Wall Street Journal (subscription required) featured an article on Pfizer's new CEO and his strategic plan.
    • Pfizer's (NYSE: PFE) new CEO, Jeffrey B. Kindler, is preparing to detail his strategic vision for the company that will likely involve more job cuts.
    • Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) is claiming a nanotechnology research breakthrough that would bring big benefits in performance.
    • According to a Nomura report, Sony Corp (NYSE: SNE) will reach only 75% of its global target for PlayStation 3 sales this fiscal year through March.
  • The New York Times had an article highlighting the possibility of New York funding stem cell research.
    • New York Governor Eliot Spitzer called for the passage of a $2B 10-year bond initiative for research and development, at least half of which would be set aside to pay for stem cell research.
    • Citigroup (NYSE: C) may shorten its name to Citi and drop its umbrella logo.
OTHER PAPERS:
  • The UK Times wrote that Ford (NYSE: F) may have trouble selling its Aston Martin unit after potential buyers found problems in the divisions books while doing due diligence.
  • El Pais wrote that Fidel Castro is in "very grave" condition after three failed operations and complications from an intestinal infection known as diverticulitis.
