The bears were back in charge. Jobless claims rose again in the US, China's trade data was weak, headlines hit about demonstrators being fired upon in Saudi Arabia, and even lower oil prices failed to boost the mood. Treasury bond prices even rallied on a day when bond guru Bill Gross said he was effectively out of the Treasury buying now and on a day when we saw a record monthly government deficit, and gold was lower as the dollar rallied. Moody's also downgraded Spain yet again.
Here were today's closing bell levels:

S&P 500 1,295.11 -24.91 (-1.89%)

There are literally hundreds of new drugs hitting the market each year. Why write about this particular drug? The drug bears discussion because it is the first one in 50 years to treat a disease called Lupus. Lupus is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system turns against part of the body it is designated to protect. It causes debilitating joint pain, organ damage and skin rashes. Up to now the key medication used to treat Lupus are steroids.
A team of researchers from Human Genome Sciences (HGSI) headed by William Haseltine started looking at genes and their special functions. The problem was that there was no gene known to cause Lupus. So they started thinking outside the box. Instead of finding the gene first and then its function, they looked for the function then found the gene called BLyS that is elevated in Lupus. The new drug is called Benlysta.

CPI and some overseas stability hopes on the ECB heading to Ireland helped stocks hold up most of the trading day. Unfortunately, the Federal Reserve noted that banks will have to undergo new stress tests before they can repay investors and reinstate higher dividends.
Donald Trump even said he might consider running for President. Shares rolled over in the last 90 minutes after it looked like a positive close was in the bag. That put the verdict of up or down as being a coin toss right up to the close.
