In his specialty yield-oriented advisory service -- High Income Alert -- he asks, "Why buy a stock scraping the bottom?" Here, the leading advisor offers four reasons behind this new recommendation.

"GE, of course, is a global leader in appliances, aviation, healthcare, transportation, energy, water technologies, cable, film, consumer electronics, lighting, electrical distribution and finance.

"The U.S. economy is in the dumpster right now, so it's no surprise to find GE there, too. From a high of more than $40 a little more than a year ago, GE trades near its 52-week low today.
Two advisors that specializes in income investing -- Mark Skousen and Nick Lanyi -- both turn to high-yielder, Southern Peru Copper (NYSE: PCU) as a contrarian play on building and infrastructure growth ahead.

Skousen, in his High Income Alert, he says, "Make no mistake, this is a contrarian play. But if you believe in buying straw hats in winter, PCU is an exceptional value at these levels."

"More than 2.9 billion pounds of copper are used in construction every year, primarily in plumbing and wiring, while electronic products use more than 1.9 billion pounds a year.

"Transportation equipment -- including cars, trains, planes and submarines -- uses more than 1 billion pounds a year.

"The manufacture of industrial equipment requires another 1 billion pounds annually. And consumer and general products, from cookware to church bells to pennies, require another 800 million pounds.

"Southern Peru operates the world's largest copper mine high in the Andes mountains, producing more than 800 million pounds of copper a year.

"Of course, the commodity bull market that was running at a full gallop in the first half of this year has stopped dead in its tracks. Copper prices are no exception. When building and manufacturing slow, so does the demand for the red metal.

Continue reading Southern Peru (PCU): Two income experts build gains in copper

Southern Peru (PCU): Two income experts build gains in copper originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 22 Dec 2008 10:14:00 EST.
Skousen explains, "The dollar continues to slide. Oil is approaching $100 a barrel, and gold, a sign of global instability, now is above $800. And the mortgage credit market continues to soften.

"All of these conditions make it difficult to profit, even in our high dividend-paying stocks. Fortunately, history is on our side. Studies show that a well-diversified portfolio of dividend-paying stocks tend to be more stable during difficult times.

"Our safest position is in oil stocks, so we are going to add another oil & gas stock to our portfolio: Penn West Energy. The trust bought out Canetic recently to create the largest oil and gas trust in North America.

"The combined trust is worth more than $15 billion and has the equivalent production of more than 200,000 barrels of oil a day. Penn West holds interests in western Canadian oil and natural gas pools, along with opportunities in oil sands, coal-bed methane, shale gas, and enhanced oil recovery.

"Penn West is paying an incredible dividend that now is about 35 cents a month, compared to 30 cents a year ago.
In his The Turnaround Trader, he looks at Patterson-UTI Energy Inc. (NASDAQ: PTEN), an independent oil and natural gas operator that provides pumping services and remedial work on existing wells in North America. He says, "Patterson-UTI Energy has been in a two-year bear market.

"Two years ago, the stock topped out at $38 a share. This year, it reached a high of $28. In the most recent quarter, its revenues and earnings fell unexpectedly by 18%. But Patterson-UTI Energy is sporting a 25% profit margin and now is selling at only six times current earnings.

"The stock is deeply undervalued and easily could move back up to $28 a share or higher. Zacks Investment Research predicts the stock will reach $29 this year, 'well within historical trading range.' Let's buy Patterson-UTI Energy and set a protective stop of $18 a share. For those willing to take a gamble, consider buying the January $30 calls."

Continue reading Best energy ideas: Patterson-UTI (PTEN) for growth, Harvest (HTE) for income

Best energy ideas: Patterson-UTI (PTEN) for growth, Harvest (HTE) for income originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 19 Oct 2007 15:10:00 EST. I had a chance to meet with many of the U.S. and foreign financial experts featured at the show, and over the next week I will share some of their top investment ideas. To view all of the stocks featured in this special global report, click here.

In his search for high growth and income, Mark Skousen searches worldwide, and indeed, his latest trio of dividend plays reach from Australia and China to Peru.

The editor of the Skousen High Income Alert and host of the annual investor think tank, Freedomfest, explains, "We hold two foreign commodity stocks in our high-yield portfolio that have achieved double-digit percentage gains, while paying double-digit percentage dividend yields. And both stocks look like winners for 2007 as commodity prices climb.

"Southern Copper Corp. (NYSE:PCU) is the world's fifth largest copper producer and it is only one of a select few commodity plays that pays a large dividend.

"Southern Copper now is up 19% since the first of the year and up 39% since we initially recommended it in early October. Despite lower copper and gold prices in the past six months, Southern Copper is minting money by maintaining low costs and increasing production.

"Plus, the stock pays an incredible 11% dividend. It should pay a $1-plus dividend in the next week or two weeks. What's not to like? Keep on buying. Southern Copper is part of our incredible high-income portfolio.

Continue reading Global gains: Double digit dividends in commodities

Global gains: Double digit dividends in commodities originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 16 Feb 2007 14:30:00 EST.
