The company posted what appeared to be a strong earnings report, yet its stock is experiencing some pressure. At the time of this writing, it was down 3.3% to $19.09 on robust volume.

According to the Associated Press, the company made 14 cents per share during the fiscal first quarter -- when the projection called for a loss of 5 cents per share. Great performance, right? And furthermore, this time last year at there was a Q1 loss of 4 cents per share. I mean, that has to be worth a bid, correct?
Continue reading Lennar Down After Q1 Report: Watch the Price Action

Lennar Down After Q1 Report: Watch the Price Action originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 29 Mar 2011 17:30:00 EST. This was following the company's third-quarter report. Well, now we've got the fourth-quarter report to consider. Should I change my opinion?

You know, I feel like I should. Yesterday's price action was somewhat compelling. The stock experienced an increase in value of 7%. The closing price was $20.24, not too far away from the 52-week high of $21.79. The 52-week low for the stock is $11.93, so the shares are comfortably above that level.

Continue reading Lennar Earnings: Time to Be Bullish?

Lennar Earnings: Time to Be Bullish? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 12 Jan 2011 09:00:00 EST. While these results were better than a year ago when the company reported a loss of $3.21 per share ($250.8 million), the homebuilder fell short of the consensus estimate of a loss of 91 cents per share. Quarterly revenue checked in at $353 million, which is far worse than the $437.4 million a year earlier. The amount of contracts for homes fell 13%, coming in at 1,078 homes.
Continue reading Hovnanian Posts Larger-Than-Expected Fourth-Quarter Loss

Hovnanian Posts Larger-Than-Expected Fourth-Quarter Loss originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 22 Dec 2010 10:00:00 EST. They were feeling quite miserable today. With a little over an hour to go before the market closes up shop, shares of the homebuilder were off by 5.7% to $11.48 as the market digested the latest quarterly report. Strong volume backed the trade.

The 52-week low for the stock is $9.41 while the 52-week high is $15.44. The one-year chart can be interpreted in a couple different ways (such is the limitation of technical analysis). While the big plunge in the middle cannot be ignored, the sideways trading aspect could be indicative that the shares are trying to find a level of support.
Continue reading D.R. BZH lost 81 cents per share during the most-recent quarter, a far cry from the firm's earnings of 84 cents per share in the same quarter a year ago. BZH's loss from continuing operations was 78 cents per share, far short of the Street's expected loss of 46 cents per share. Quarterly revenue also fell, slipping 25% to $274.8 million. Despite the drop, the revenue topped the consensus estimate for $255.3 million.

For the full fiscal year, BZH lost 57 cents per share ($34 million). Revenue came in at $1 billion. This loss is far better than last year's loss of $4.90 per share ($189.4 million) and revenue of $971.1 million.
Continue reading Beazer Homes Reports 4Q Loss

Beazer Homes Reports 4Q Loss originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 05 Nov 2010 09:30:00 EST. Today, with about three hours to go before the end of the session, it is higher by almost 3.8% to $12.15 on the back of an earnings report.

Indeed, the chart shows what I'm talking about. And you have to wonder if the strength in the homebuilder will continue. There is one problem: although volume does stand a chance of ultimately going above the average, at the time of this writing, it isn't too impressive.

Continue reading KB Home Up on Q3 Report

KB Home Up on Q3 Report originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 14:30:00 EST. It closed at a price of $15.14, which represents a gain of over 8%. Volume was quite active, implying conviction in the move.

The one-year chart appears to be a volatile one, but it's in the context of a narrow range. The 52-week low is $11.56, and the 52-week high is $21.79. Does the stock have what it takes to break out of recent resistance levels?
The homebuilder recorded a second-quarter profit of 10 cents per diluted share, which includes noncash pretax charges of $10.2 million for inventory impairments. Not a bad quarter when compared to the year-earlier loss of $2.81 per share. The first being weaker-than-expected earnings for KB Home (NYSE: KBH) and the second being a less-than-expected rise in new home sales last month.

First, the good news. New home sales did rise last month. In the current economic environment, that by itself is good news. Unfortunately the rise was less than analysts had been expecting to see.

Continue reading New home sales rose less than expected last month

New home sales rose less than expected last month originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 25 Sep 2009 13:30:00 EST.
Wall Street's current consensus for Lennar's earnings this year is a loss of $2.88. In my opinion, that's too low. I think Lennar will have little trouble surprising Wall Street analysts later this year.

The stock fell from $82 to just $7 per share. We haven't seen shakeouts like that since the tech bust.

Unlike some of the other home builders, KBH probably hit bottom early. The company's loss from last year wasn't as bad as its loss from 2007, and that's a good sign.

What I also like about KB Home is that the stock's volatility has calmed down, which is often the result of heavy institutional buying.

Continue reading Home builder stock #3: KB Home (KBH)

Home builder stock #3: KB Home (KBH) originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Sun, 30 Aug 2009 09:00:00 EST. Horton (NYSE: DHI) saw its earnings-per-share plunge from a profit of $3.90 in 2006 to a staggering loss of $8.34 last year. Fortunately, the worst is behind us. This year D.R. Horton will probably lose about $1 per share.

I don't like to see any loss, but this is a huge improvement. In fact, I think there's even a good chance D.R. Horton could start posting some earnings gains by next year.

D.R. Horton is also a buy.

Consider that the Homebuilders Exchange-Traded Fund (NYSE: XHB) plunged from $40 per share in early 2007 to just $8 per share earlier this year.

Since March, however, things have improved. There are signs that the housing market is getting back on its feet -- or at least, declining less slowly. Existing home sales recently registered their biggest gain in more than a decade. Seasonally-adjusted single-family building permits are up 27% since bottoming in March, while single-family housing starts have increased five straight months and are up 36% since March.

Continue reading Is it safe to buy home builders?

Is it safe to buy home builders? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Sat, 29 Aug 2009 09:00:00 EST.
