Hot Topic: Not So Hot

Fashion retailer Hot Topic (HOTT) was noted in BloggingStock's Analyst Calls post Tuesday. Janney Montgomery initiated the equity, which counts Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) as a colleague, with a neutral rating and a price target of $5.

I hadn't looked at the stock in a while so I pulled up the one-year chart. You know what? It isn't hot. Maybe it was hot at times, but since mid-April, the graphic indicates that the stock is ailing. The 52-week high for the shares is $9.96; the 52-week low is $4.58. Yesterday, the company closed at $4.87. Yes, it's a single-digit situation we're talking about.

Before the Bell: Futures Lower Despite Strong March Retail Sales

U.S. stock futures once again fell Thursday morning, pointing to yet another lower start and yet another possible session of losses amid worries over Greece and its debt problems. Meanwhile, investors' focus is also on the airline and retail sectors as rumors about merger talks between two airlines surfaced late Wednesday and retailers are reporting March sales this morning.

U.S. stocks retreated Wednesday and may continue to pull back Thursday after nearly two months of continuous gains. European shares declined again on mounting worries about Greece's financial predicament, especially as the country's borrowing costs keep climbing. Meanwhile, The European Central Bank and the Bank of England have kept their benchmark interest rate unchanged, at record lows.

Closing Bell: The grinch comes early (INTC, HOTT, MVIS, ETFC, SHLD)

Today's jobs data was not bad, relatively any way, but the housing delinquencies and foreclosure rates was just awful and not representative of anything good. The overseas selling had the markets soft this morning and despite a recovery off lows the 'positive green line' was never really in the cards at the end of the trading day. The retailers are also running soft because of excessive discounting and promotions before the holiday season even starts.

Here are the unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow 10,341.44 -84.87 (-0.81%)
S&P 500 1,094.90 -14.90 (-1.34%)
Nasdaq 2,156.82 -36.32 (-1.66%)

Teen retailers buck the trend with strong sales

But one segment of that market is holding up pretty well: clothing for teens. The USA Today reports that Buckle (NASDAQ: BKE), Hot Topic (NASDAQ: HOTT), and Aéropostale (NYSE: ARO) were the only specialty stores this week to report positive same-store sales in March.

Mary Brett Whitfield, senior vice president at the management consulting and research firm Retail Forward, told the newspaper that "Teens are still growing and might actually need new clothes."
