Revenues were higher, but net earnings fell, due mainly to the acquisition of Concentra Inc. Concentra provides services such as occupational medicine , urgent care and physical therapy.

The company reported a profit of $107.3 million or 63 cents a share, down from $250.7 million of $1.48 a share a year ago, as reported in the Wall Street Journal. Now it's just General Motors, like back in the good old days. The GM IPO raised $20.1 billion from investors today, and the stock has maintained a price throughout the day right around $2/share higher than the $33/share IPO price. Counteracting the bullish news from GM, the US Labor Department said that initial unemployment claims rose by 2,000 last week, to a seasonally adjusted 439,000. Not real good news, but this is near the lowest unemployment level in two years and the average has fallen by about 4.2% over the past five weeks.

The news from Ireland, where the government has been moving toward agreeing to a loan to bail out the country's faltering banks, has boosted the euro, but the gains have been small because traders worry about Portugal, Spain, and Italy needing a similar dose of lending. Yields on 10-year US Treasuries rose to 2.92% on signs of improvement in the US economy and a concomitant rise in risk appetite among investors.
The health insurer isn't doing so well, unfortunately. In late trading, shares were down almost 3% to $43.73. Volume is above the norm, as you might expect.

I've covered many stocks that are near their 52-week highs, but this one doesn't fall into such a desirable category. Alas, the 52-week high on the shares stands at $52.66. And, as you can see from the following one-year chart, the stock began its pullback after it topped out in January. On the schedule are consumer credit, construction spending, factory orders, and pending home sales for June, the employment situation, the Import Price Index, and new motor vehicle sales for July, as well as the ISM Manufacturing and Non-manufacturing Indexes for July.

The week will also bring quarterly reports from home builders Beazer Homes USA Inc. (NYSE: BZH), D.R. Horton Inc. (NYSE: DHI), and Pulte Homes Inc. (NYSE: PHM). Yet again, analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expect all three to have narrowed their losses in the most recent quarter. However, they've all tended to post deeper-than-expected losses in recent quarters as well. Analysts also expect to see their revenue down 45% or more for the past quarter. They forecast long-term EPS growth of 7% or more, but none of these homebuilders has a First Call consensus buy recommendation, not surprisingly. Short interest is falling off for Beazer and D.R. Horton, and D.R. Horton and Pulte have been reporting positive cash flow from operations, but all three of them said they had more long-term debt than cash in hand last time around. Mortgage insurer PMI Group Inc. (NYSE: PMI) is likewise expected to report that it narrowed its second-quarter loss.

Continue reading The week in preview: Seeking more signs of economic stability

The week in preview: Seeking more signs of economic stability originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Sun, 02 Aug 2009 12:30:00 EST. Analysts certainly have high hopes for some companies reporting earnings this week.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expect First Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR) to report first-quarter earnings of $1.51 per share, which is 62.3% higher than a year ago. Revenue for the quarter is expected to be 105.6% higher, or $404.9 million. First Solar earnings have topped expectations in the past five quarters, by as much as 47.3%. The long-term EPS growth forecast is 40.6% and the forward PE ratio estimate is 23.0. In the previous quarter, Tempe, Ariz.-based First Solar reported having more cash on hand than debt. The First Call consensus recommendation is to buy FSLR; CNBC recently included it as a stock pick. First Solar has announced that it will build new solar power plants in Nevada and Germany.
