Options Update: Apple Volatility Flat at 36; Shares Near Six-Week Low

Apple (AAPL) closed up 2% Thursday to $308.43. Overall option implied volatility of 36 is near its 26-week average, according to Track Data, suggesting non-directional price movement.

iShares NASDAQ Biotechnology Index (IBB) closed up 1.5% to $88.32. Overall option implied volatility of 21 is near its 26-week average according to Track Data, suggesting non-directional price movement

CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) is recently down 13.8% to 18.75, below its ten-day moving average of 19.66.

Option Traders Buying ProLogis Calls and LAN Airlines Puts

Option traders appear to be setting up for a bullish move on ProLogis (PLD). Traders plowed into 1,067 new call option contracts -- 2.81 times the average volume -- on the stock on Thursday. And we know that traders were eager to get into this trade because 95% of the trades came in on the ask price.

ProLogis looks like it formed a bottom in early July and has since formed a higher low in August. The stock closed Thursday at $10.92, down 0.18% during the past month.

A defensive investment: Biotechnology ETFs

One of the buzzwords that is currently in vogue in the investment community is biotechnology. This is a broad-based field that covers technological applications in any biological system, meaning humans, animals, agriculture, and medicines. This is a booming science and the investment field offers many opportunities for wealth accumulation.

If you don't want to spend countless hours trying to understand not just financials, but scientific and technical jargon that biotech companies harbor, exchange-traded funds (ETFs) may be the better choice for investing in the biotechnology industry.

An ETF is similar to buying a share of a company, but instead of getting one particular company you're investing in a bundle of companies within a particular field or specialty. It's a great way to invest in something you believe in while still hedging your bets and having a bit of diversity.
