That drove prices to $48 an ounce. Now, 31 years later, silver is shooting higher again. The March silver futures contract <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704900004576152313786856684.html?mod=WSJ_Markets_LEFTTopNews">closed at $32.296 per ounce</a>, up 72 cents.</p>
<p>Since gold is expensive, investors are turning to silver to hedge against inflation. Many fear that the Federal Reserve will not be able to control the spike in commodity prices. The Fed is buying $600 billion of treasuries and keeping interest rates near zero.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/19/silver-near-a-31-year-high/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Silver Near a 31-Year High</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/19/silver-near-a-31-year-high/">Silver Near a 31-Year High</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sat, 19 Feb 2011 12:50:00 EST. <p>The editor of <a href="http://www.thestockadvisors.com/ccount/click.php?id=2743">Real Wealth</a> newsletter explains, "Obama has pledged to give the U.S. economy a massive shot in the arm with the biggest public works spending package this nation has seen in more than 50 years.</p>
<p>"Besides spending on road, bridge, school improvements and construction, the plan is likely to include upgrading our deteriorating electrical grid and greater investments in public transportation, among other infrastructure projects. The plan is also expected to create about 2.5 million jobs.</p>
<p>"While steel and other base metal prices have tanked sharply this year on slumping global demand, companies that produce the metals have staged some massive cutbacks in production and many have shuttered large chunks of their operations.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/01/20/industrial-metals-strong-plays-on-obamas-rebuilding-plans/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Industrial metals: Strong plays on Obama's rebuilding plans</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/01/20/industrial-metals-strong-plays-on-obamas-rebuilding-plans/">Industrial metals: Strong plays on Obama's rebuilding plans</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 20 Jan 2009 12:30:00 EST. Since last February, the benchmark <a href="http://www.crbtrader.com/crbindex/default.asp">Reuters/Jefferies CRB Index</a> has gained 21.8%, aided in particular by strength in agricultural, energy and precious metals-related products.</p>
<p>One group of commodities, base (or industrial) metals -- which includes aluminum, zinc and copper -- has not kept pace with the others, however. Over the past twelve months, the <a href="http://www.powershares.com/products/overview.aspx?ticker=dbb">Deutsche Bank Liquid Commodity Index-Optimum Yield Industrial Metals Excess Return Index</a> -- which has an exchange-traded fund, the PowerShares <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/powershares-db-base-metals-fund/dbb/ase?tabs=quotesandnews">DB Base Metals Fund ETF</a> (AMEX: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/powershares-db-base-metals-fund/dbb/ase?tabs=quotesandnews">DBB</a>) -- has only risen 2.1%.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/02/04/base-metals-ready-to-run/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Base metals: Ready to run</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/02/04/base-metals-ready-to-run/">Base metals: Ready to run</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 04 Feb 2008 16:17:00 EST.
