Oracle meets earnings expectations, but misses on revenue

Through aggressive M&A, Oracle (NASDAQ: ORCL) has expanded its software into areas like enterprise resource planning (ERP), customer relationship management (CRM) and middleware. But the fact remains that the company still has a tremendous franchise in the database market. And the nature of this market is awesome. For example, Oracle has recently implemented a 250 terabyte database for AT&T (NASDAQ: T) and one for 700 terabytes for Yahoo! (NASDAQ: YHOO).

It certainly makes for a highly profitable business. In Oracle's fiscal Q1 report issued Wednesday, the company posted profits of $1.1 billion or 22 cents per share and operating cash flow of $3.7 billion.

Super entrepreneur, Norman Brinker, dies

On Tuesday, Norman Brinker, pioneer in the restaurant business, died at the age of 78.

Norman Brinker started Steak & Ale with about $10,000 in savings and a $5,000 loan. Over a decade, he grew Steak & Ale to 109 locations. During the 1960s, Brinker developed the salad bar, which he showcased at his Steak & Ale chain. He then sold the company to Pillsbury in 1976.

However, Brinker didn't stop innovating. At Pillsbury, he formed a new concept: Bennigan's. After this, he ran Burger King (NYSE: BKC).

Heidrick & Struggles (HSII) hunts for more business

As the economy plunged in Q4, Corporate America pulled back from recruiting top talent. No doubt, this was a big drag on Heidrick & Struggles International, Inc. (NASDAQ: HSII), which is a top global executive search firm.

In the quarter, revenues fell 12.1% to $134.9 million. Net income was $5.3 million or $0.30 per share, which compares to net income of $9.2 million, or $0.49 per share in the same period a year ago.
