Crew (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/j-crew-group-inc/jcg/nys">JCG</a> - <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/j-crew-group-inc/jcg/nys/option-chains">option chain</a>) shares are rising today ahead of the company's earnings announcement, which is scheduled for after the market close tomorrow. <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/earnings/j-crew-group-inc/jcg/nys/actuals-estimates">Analysts expect to see $0.46 per share</a>, versus $0.29 during the same period last year, but the recent trend for the stock has been in a downward direction. Because of the recent movement, I expect that if the company disappoints, the stock will no drop as much as it might rise if the news is good.If you think that the stock won't fall by too much in the coming months, then now could be a good time to look at a bullish hedged trade on JCG.<br />
<br />
JCG opened this morning at $32.46. So far today the stock has hit a low of $32.32 and a high of $33.63. As of 12:15, JCG is trading at $33.52 up 0.76 (2.2%). The chart for JCG looks bullish and <a target="_blank" href="http://www.iotogo.com/spoutlookonline">S&amp;P</a> gives JCG a positive 4 STARS (out of 5) buy ranking.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/25/j-crew-q2-earnings-preview/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>J. Unfortunately, it is no longer near its 52-week high of $50.96. The shares closed at a price of $43.86 on Thursday. Is the recent pullback a possible buying opportunity?<br />
<br />
Interestingly enough, Elizabeth Harrow, <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/26/speculation-heats-up-on-j-crew-ahead-of-earnings/">in a story previewing</a> yesterday's after-the-bell earnings report, mentioned Wall Street's current discouraging attitude about the retailer. This will obviously make some investors hesitant to buy the stock. Yet, I remember how the company issued a great <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/10/j-crew-posts-strong-q4-time-to-take-profits/">fourth-quarter summary</a> back in March. At the time, I said taking profits might not be such a bad idea, and that there was nothing in the rulebook that said you couldn't check in on the business at a later date. Well, the later date is here. What should we think now?<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/28/j-crew-groups-q1-income-and-comps-were-beyond-cool/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>J. Crew Group (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/j-crew-group-inc/jcg/nys">JCG</a>), an apparel chain whose related stocks include Abercrombie &amp; Fitch (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/abercrombie-and-fitch-co/anf/nys">ANF</a>), Gap (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/gap-inc-del/gps/nys">GPS</a>), and JCPenney (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/penney-j-c-co-inc-holding-co/jcp/nys">JCP</a>), reported strong sales and earnings yesterday after the bell. I'm impressed; I have to say, <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/25/j-crew-reports-an-excellent-quarter-stock-a-buy-before-the-h/">like I did the last time</a>, bravo to an excellent quarter.</p>
<p>Overall sales rose 19% in Q4, according to the corporate <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/j-crew-group-inc-announces-fourth-quarter-and-fiscal-2009-results/rfid307253541/?channel=pf">press release</a>. Same-store revenues increased 17%. Earnings per share were 61 cents on a diluted basis. A loss of 22 cents was recorded twelve months ago. As far as the analysts go, they should be pleased. Then again, they probably should be disappointed, since their projections were completely taken out (I guess it all depends on one's perspective). Either way, the call was for net income to come in around <a href="http://www.earnings.com/company.asp?client=cb&amp;ticker=jcg">46 cents per share</a>.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/10/j-crew-posts-strong-q4-time-to-take-profits/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>J. It will dominate the conversation when Q4 and full-year financials are reported. A strong <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/BlackFriday/">Black Friday</a> brought with it <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/28/black-friday-busy-but-momentum-may-not-hold/" target="_blank">concerns that momentum will fade</a>, but opportunity is not dispensed equally. Some retailers will come through the season better than others, and industry experts have already chosen their favorites.</p>

I've been bearish on J. Crew Group (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/j-crew-group-inc/jcg/nys">JCG</a>), as this <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/05/29/j-crew-beats-projections-but-is-the-stock-too-high/">previous article</a> will indicate. But since the latest quarterly results show a vast improvement of the retailer's fundamentals, I guess you could say I was decidedly behind the curve. </p>
<p>According to the <a href="http://money.aol.com/rtn/pr/j-crew-group-inc-announces-third-quarter-fiscal-2009-results/rfid274091161?channel=pf">earnings release</a>, revenues increased 14% in the third quarter. Same-store sales advanced 8%. Net income more than doubled to 67 cents per diluted share. A lot of this good news was expected, as <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/24/j-crew-earnings-preview-a-strong-q3-all-buttoned-up/">Trey Thoelcke</a> pointed out in his earnings preview. Still, the bottom line beat the analysts by several pennies. And you've got to love the increase seen in the gross margin.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/25/j-crew-reports-an-excellent-quarter-stock-a-buy-before-the-h/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>J. Don't laugh. In 1982, when The Kansas City Board of Trade started trading Value Line futures (before there were S&amp;P futures), we used to kick around in securities classes what would happen if eventually stocks became so commoditized that individual companies couldn't be removed from the gravitational pull.</p>
<p>For example, we know today looks like a terrible day, with Europe down horribly and our futures real soggy. While Canadian banks on the whole held up better than their U.S. counterparts during the financial crisis, these five are expected to report that their earnings are still declining in the most recent quarter.</p>
<p>Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters are looking for EPS for these banks to have fallen from 15% to 25% from a year ago. Their long-term EPS growth forecast is for between 10% and 12%, which is in the same range as U.S. rivals <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/jpmorgan-chase-and-co/jpm/nys">JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/jpmorgan-chase-and-co/jpm/nys">JPM</a>) and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wells-fargo-and-company/wfc/nys">Wells Fargo &amp; Co.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wells-fargo-and-company/wfc/nys">WFC</a>), but better than <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/bank-of-america-corporation/bac/nys">Bank of America Corp.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/bank-of-america-corporation/bac/nys">BAC</a>) and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/citigroup-incorporated/c/nys">Citigroup Inc.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/citigroup-incorporated/c/nys">C</a>). Earnings multiples for these Canadian banks are 10x to 12x, but none of them have a First Call consensus recommendation is to buy. The Motley Fool, though, considers TD as <a href="http://www.fool.com/investing/value/2009/08/17/5-top-rated-value-stocks.aspx">a value stock</a> and RY a stock <a href="http://www.fool.com/investing/dividends-income/2009/07/28/4-star-stocks-poised-to-pop-rbc.aspx">poised to pop</a>. The retailer posted a loss of 22 cents per share on Tuesday after the bell. As I said in my <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/03/09/earnings-preview-shareholders-are-bracing-for-j-crews-q4-repo/">earnings preview</a>, Wall Street was bracing for a loss of 27 cents per share. That five-penny beat helped to send J. Crew's shares up by well over 10% in the after-hours session. </p>
<p>I think the buying was a bit overdone. Sure, I'll give credit where credit is due. Management did beat the analysts and their precious earnings models. How much credit should I give beyond that? </p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/03/11/j-crew-beats-analysts-but-the-stock-is-not-in-fashion-to-me/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>J. It's especially tough to be a retailer like <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/j-crew-group-inc/jcg/nys">J. Crew Group, Inc.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/j-crew-group-inc/jcg/nys">JCG</a>). After all, if you're a <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wal-mart-stores-inc/wmt/nys">Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wal-mart-stores-inc/wmt/nys">WMT</a>) or a <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/family-dollar-stores-inc/fdo/nys">Family Dollar Stores</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/family-dollar-stores-inc/fdo/nys">FDO</a>), at least you can entice consumers with your low prices, and at least you stock things that people need. Not so with J. Crew. It's a fashion retailer that you don't have to visit during the recession. Apparently, many people indeed <em>haven't</em> been visiting lately. That's why shareholders will most likely be nervous when fourth-quarter numbers are issued after the bell on Tuesday, March 10. </p>
<p>According to this <a href="http://www.earnings.com/company.asp?client=cb&amp;ticker=jcg">source</a>, J. Crew should report an earnings loss of $0.27 per share. How ugly! This compares to a profit of $0.41 per share in the year-ago period. I expect to hear the same stuff that we've been hearing from retailers such as <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/urban-outfitters-inc/urbn/nas">Urban Outfitters</a> (NASDAQ: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/urban-outfitters-inc/urbn/nas">URBN</a>) and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/kohl-s-corporation/kss/nys">Kohl's</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/kohl-s-corporation/kss/nys">KSS</a>): things are tough, the rest of the year is going to be a huge challenge, we're doing everything we can to navigate the business through the treacherous times, etc. Such rhetoric probably won't be comforting to shareholders, especially considering that J. Crew's stock isn't too far from a 52-week low.<br /></p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/03/09/earnings-preview-shareholders-are-bracing-for-j-crews-q4-repo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Earnings preview: Shareholders are bracing for J. Traffic to the website soared on Wednesday, overwhelming the company's server at times. The Obamas "asked for invoices for everything that was submitted to them," Tom Mora, the company's head of women's design <a href="http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/01/21/j-crew-gets-a-seat-at-the-inauguration/">told The New York Times.</a><br /><br />The Obama camp reportedly told J. <p>Bermuda-based <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/frontline-ltd/fro/nys">Frontline Ltd.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/frontline-ltd/fro/nys">FRO</a>) is anticipated by analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters to be one of the biggest earnings gainers among companies scheduled to report quarterly results this coming week. The oil tanker fleet operator is expected to post third-quarter earnings of $1.97 per share, 86.8% higher than in the same period a year ago, on revenues of $399.5 million (+44.6%). Frontline missed estimates by 6.4% in the previous quarter, and the consensus recommendation by analysts is to hold FRO. While Motley Fool likes its <a href="http://www.fool.com/investing/dividends-income/2008/11/10/the-worlds-best-dividend-stocks.aspx">robust dividend</a>, <a href="http://www.thestreet.com/story/10448455/1/mad-money-lightning-round-molson-coors-looking-good.html?cm_ven=AOL&amp;cm_cat=FREE&amp;cm_ite=NA">Jim Cramer</a> said in a recent Lightning Round that he prefers rival <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/nordic-american-tanker-shipping-ltd/nat/nys">Nordic American Tanker Shipping Ltd.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/nordic-american-tanker-shipping-ltd/nat/nys">NAT</a>). <p><a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/analog-devices-inc/adi/nys">Analog Devices Inc.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/analog-devices-inc/adi/nys">ADI</a>) is also expected to be among the week's biggest earnings gainers. Analysts are looking for the semiconductor chip maker to report a fiscal fourth-quarter profit of $0.44 per share, 31.8% higher than a year ago, on revenues of $661.7 million (+2.0%). Analog Devices has beat estimates in three of the past five quarters, but only missed by 1.3% in the previous quarter.
